Sep 2 After rallying down the stretch with several birdies in round two to make the cut on the number, Perry couldn't get the one birdie he needed to make the secondary cut and play the final round in the Deutsche Bank Championship. He needed a birdie on the par-5 final hole at the TPC of Boston but drove into the rough and could not reach the green in two, then had to settle for a par. Perry led the FedEx Cup standings after the regular season, but finishing in a tie for 73rd in the Deutsche Bank dropped him two spots to a tie for ninth heading to the BMW Championship. Perry was able to get his game going in the right direction briefly in the second round in order to avoid missing the cut for the first time since his first tournament of the year, the Sony Open in Hawaii. He found himself four strokes off the cut line through 11 holes before putting up birdies on Nos. 12, 13, 17 and 18. Perry hit his approach to within two feet on the penultimate hole and then stuck his third shot three feet away on the final hole, making the kick-in birdie each time. His best finish in the BMW Championship when it was played as the Western Open was a tie for 12th in 2006, and he did not qualify for the PGA Championship when it was played at Bellerive in 1992.
