The Big Easy climbed back into the PGA Tour playoff picture by tying for third in the Deutsche Bank Championship, his best result on the circuit since he captured the Honda Classic in March. Els climbed from a distant 52nd to 19th in the FedEx Cup standings and needs another high finish this week in the BMW Championship to make sure he will advance to the Tour Championship. He tied for 18th in the BMW last year when it was held at Cog Hill. Els has a history at Bellerive, having missed the cut by shooting 73-80 when the PGA Championship was held on the course in St. Louis in 1992. He couldn't keep up with winner Vijay Singh in the final round last week at the TPC of Boston, where a 50-foot eagle putt on the 72nd hole stopped two inches short and prevented Els from breaking 70 in all four rounds. His best two rounds were the first two, when he shot 66-65 and made 13 birdies against only two bogeys. The best news was that Els was solid with the putter, which has let him down often the last few years. He averaged 27.3 putts per round to tie for ninth in the field and was especially sharp when he took a total of only 51 putts the first two days. Els' best stretch of the week came when he closed his opening round with four birdies in six holes, ending at No. 9. |
