Emotion Made Bubba Watson’s Win Special: A Fan’s Reaction
In watching the event on TV, it was easy to start cheering for Watson. The man had a determined look about him for the entire final round. That look quickly gave ways to tears as Watson completed one of the more emotional victories I have ever seen. It might not have been Tiger, Phil, or Rory winning the event. However, Watson definitely gave golf fans a winner they could get behind.
The final round got crazy early for the leaders. Oosthuizen nailed a double-eagle to quickly take a two-shot lead. Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson had his second triple-bogey of the tournament and spent the rest of the day recovering from that. After a tough start, Watson made his move with four straight birdies on the back nine. He twice missed birdie putts that would have won him the tournament. He finally got the job done on the second playoff hole. An amazing second shot on that hole enabled Watson to seal the win and earn a Green Jacket. Overall, it was about as exciting a day of golf as I've seen in a long time.
Heading into the Masters, Watson was definitely one of the names to watch. He has been a solid performer and is one of the top young Americans. However, it never really felt like he had a shot to win the tournament until the 15th hole on the last day. I could see the intensity in his face as he made his move on the back nine. He rarely displayed emotion of any kind. When he missed a shot, he looked composed. When he made one, he looked pretty much the same. It wasn't until he won the event that we saw him finally break down. After a series of emotional hugs, Watson broke out in tears.
One of the things I love about new major winners is the fact that we get to see special moments like this one. Now that Watson has shown this to the world, I expect many more fans to get behind him. He will be a force at every event from now on and I would expect a lot more golf fans to take notice. He is a worthy winner of the biggest prize in golf.
