Hank Haney’s Book About Tiger Woods Has Piqued My Interest: A Fan’s Perspective

I must admit when I first heard about Hank Haney's book, "The Big Miss", I had little interest in reading it. I'm not a big Tiger Woods fan and I figured that Haney is a golf instructor, not a writer, so I would just give it a pass. However, as more and more details and excerpts emerge about the book, it seems rather interesting.

One intriguing part is the fascination that Woods had with the Navy SEALs. I have a lot of respect for Navy SEALs and Special Forces types in general. SEALs are some really serious guys that do some really bad things to bad people. If you're like me you probably can't see Tiger Woods joining their ranks. However, if the excerpts are to be believed, Tiger Woods fancied himself a Navy SEAL and even did repeated training with them. It was during this training that Tiger Woods hurt his knee. Imagine if that's actually true. The one thing that perhaps derailed Tiger Woods' quest to break Jack Nicklaus' records was his own fascination with the military that his father loved.

Of course there are plenty of other tidbits that have been leaked in advance of the book's release. There's nothing salacious coming out, but the fact that Tiger Woods didn't want his then wife Elin Nordegren to celebrate a win rings true of Tiger. The part where he reportedly said that he is not Jesper Parnevik and that he did not see it necessary to celebrate a win; that's reminiscent of NFL coaches. I wonder if Woods ever let loose after a Masters victory. Could you see him going through a Krispy Kreme drive thru and getting a box of doughnuts like Phil Mickelson did? I don't see that happening.

Tiger Woods remains the most talked about golfer in the world. Hank Haney knows this and he also knows that a book about Tiger Woods that will allow the public to glimpse some details behind his personal life will draw readers. I think there are probably plenty of things that Hank Haney could write about his time with Tiger Woods that would give readers tremendous insight into Woods. No salacious details are required. Of course, if that book were to be written it might also garner several readers.

If the recent articles about "The Big Miss" have piqued your interest, it will come out on March 27. Perhaps it might make for interesting reading material on a rainy day when you can't play golf.
