Top Five Golfers Under Age 25: A Fan’s Take
Professional golf is always looking for the next young star that is going to burst on the scene and raise the bar for everyone else. Whether it was Jack Nicklaus in the early '60s, Seve Ballesteros in the mid-'70s or a young Tiger Woods in the mid-'90s, golf is looking for the next generation to take over. In the search for the next big thing, who are the best young players under the age of 25 according to the World Golf Rankings?
It just so happens that the top ranked player on this list is also near the very top of the list when it comes to the World Golf Rankings. That player is Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman is only 22 years of age and recently ascended to the top of the World Golf Rankings with his victory at the Honda Classic. Luke Donald has since regained the top ranking but McIlroy is still at number two in the world. In addition to this, McIlroy also has won a United States Open Championship and is one of the favorites for the 2012 Masters.
Jason Day is the top young player from Australia. At the age of 24 Day has entered the world's top 10. While Day has only one PGA Tour title to his credit, he has runner up finishes in both the U.S. Open and the Masters. Jason Day is definitely a player to watch.
Rickie Fowler may be better known for his colorful clothes than for his golf game. However, don't let the bright orange outfits overshadow his game. Young Mr. Fowler is quite the golfer. He is currently ranked 41st in the World Golf Rankings. Although Fowler is yet to garner his first PGA Tour win, he has finished second at four tour events. His only professional win came in Korea where Fowler bested Rory McIlroy.
Rio Ishikawa is the top young golfer from Japan. At just 20 years old Ishikawa has already broken into the top 50 in the World Golf Rankings. Ishikawa has won 11 times in his home country and recently finished second at the Puerto Rico Open. If that is not impressive enough Ishikawa carded a 58 in competition in 2011.
The final player on this list is Matteo Manassero. Many American golf fans have not seen much of Manassero but the young Italian is making a name for himself. He has already won twice on the European Tour with both wins coming prior to his 18th birthday.
Dwight is an avid golfer. While still relatively new to the game, he plays as often as the weather and his schedule will allow.
