Rory McIlroy is Going to Be the Number One Player in the World: A Fan’s Take

Rory McIlroy had a rather bittersweet ending to an excellent week of golf at the Accenture Match Play Championship. In the championship match on Sunday afternoon, February 26, McIlroy lost two and one to American Hunter Mahan. If McIlroy would have won the final match, he would have risen to the top of the World Golf Rankings for the first time in his career. I don't think that I'm breaking any new ground here, but Rory McIlroy is going to be the number one player in the world and it is going to happen soon.

Currently the number one player in the world is Luke Donald while McIlroy is ranked second. Coincidently, Luke Donald lost his opening-round match at the Accenture Match Play Championship to Ernie Els. Lee Westwood, who lost in the consolation match to Mark Wilson, also could have become number one in the world had he won the Match Play Championship.

I'm a numbers guy at heart, but I have never sat down in an effort to understand how the World Golf Rankings are calculated. In any case that's beyond the scope of this article. My point is that there is a tight grouping right now of a few players at the top of the world rankings. The top spot may change hands several times in the coming months. I am virtually certain that Rory McIlroy will be the top-ranked golfer in the world at some point very soon. If McIlroy were to win the Masters or the U.S. Open he would easily become number one in the world. I should point out that McIlroy could have won the Masters in 2011 and he did win the 2011 U.S. Open.

I am not implying that Rory McIlroy will enjoy a Tigeresque run as the world's top-ranked golfer. We may never see such a run again in our lifetimes. However, I do believe that McIlroy will be in the mix at the top of the rankings for several years. As talented as McIlroy is at the age of 21 and seeing that he is already within a half point of the top ranking, you can envision that he will have every opportunity to enjoy a nice reign atop the World Golf Rankings.

Dwight is an avid golfer. While still relatively new to the game, he plays as often as the weather and his schedule will allow.
