Talk of Tiger buzzing at tournament

  • Print

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP)—His interview over, Padraig Harrington was leaving the media center at the Chevron World Challenge when he passed Lee Westwood and offered some help.

“Would you like to know what questions are being asked?” Harrington said.

Westwood smiled and said, “I imagine there’s only one.”

Tiger Woods’ presence is larger than ever, even if he isn’t coming to his own tournament. As most players were getting ready to practice Tuesday, TV sets were tuned to a press conference in Florida, where state troopers declared the investigation into his Nov. 27 early-morning crash was over and that Woods would be cited for careless driving and fined $164.

Then came an Us Weekly story with a woman claiming to have text messages and voice mails from an affair with Woods that began more than two years ago. That magazine cover story comes less than a week after the National Enquirer published a story alleging that Woods had been seeing New York nightclub hostess Rachel Uchitel, who has denied it.

“There’s lot of questions that we’re never going to get the answers to, and the fact that he is the No. 1 sports star in the world means that there is going to be a higher profile to those things,” Harrington said. “It is what it is because of how good he is, and he’ll have to deal with it. I don’t know exactly what the truth of it all is, and the thing is, I don’t think anybody is ever going to know exactly what’s gone on. And that’s probably a good thing.

“But it won’t stop people from guessing and questioning things like that,” he said. “That’s human nature. We’re intrigued by other people’s lives.”

Most players, even those who are close to Woods, have not heard from him and don’t know what to think, much less say.

“I haven’t talked to him,” said Mark O’Meara, who took him under his wing when Woods turned pro at age 20 in 1996.

Steve Stricker went undefeated with Woods as his partner at the Presidents Cup, and their wives walked together in some of those matches. He usually gets a quick answer when he sends a text message from Woods. This time, not a peep.

“Since I haven’t heard back, I imagine he’s in—I don’t know the right word—a lot of pain,” Stricker said. “And I don’t even know what that means. I don’t know what it’s all about. I just feel bad for the guy. He’s getting hammered in the media.”

The tournament has taken a supporting role to the drama being played out inside the gates of Isleworth, where Woods crashed his SUV into a fire hydrant and tree, and in celebrity magazines.

NBC Sports will be televising the tournament this week, and executive producer Tommy Roy said he could not say how the network will cover Woods’ absence.

“We’ll have to see what further happens in the story,” Roy said. “Between now and when we come on the air Saturday, that’s a lot of time. We have a golf tournament to cover. It’s too early to determine what we’ll do.”

Along with drawing big crowds when Woods plays, tournaments typically double their TV ratings when he is in contention. When he didn’t play last year because of knee surgery, Woods still spent time in the broadcast booth.

Greg McLaughlin, president of the Tiger Woods Foundation and tournament director, said sponsor Chevron would have liked Woods to be part of the tournament, “but they respect his decision, they support his decision.”

Asked if he had spoken to Woods, McLaughlin paused and said, “It’s not appropriate for me to talk about Tiger.”

The players don’t want to talk, either, although they anticipated such questions when they came to California.

“It’s difficult for me to comment, because I only know what you know— probably less than what you know,” Westwood said. “I was shocked when I heard it was a serious accident, then relieved to here he had been released from the hospital. Other than that, the rest is speculation and people putting their own assumption to things. I have no time for all that, and I don’t want to be part of it.”

Even in such an individual sport, there is a camaraderie that exists— Americans and Europeans, the No. 1 player and No. 120 player—because ultimately, the competition is between the player and the course.

British Open champion Stewart Cink pointed out that it still can be a lonely game, far different from football and baseball teams.

“It’s hard when you don’t have that built-in framework of the team, when you can sort of absorb yourself into a jersey,” Cink said. “Out here, you’re an island. When you play great, you’re an island. When you play poorly, you’re an island. And when you have some attention off the course that you’d rather not have, then you’re an island.”

Woods is not likely to play again until the San Diego Invitational at Torrey Pines, which starts Jan. 28. Some players still have the Shark Shootout next week in Florida, others will open their season the first week of January in Hawaii.

Chances are, Woods will remain a topic of conversation.

“When you’re the biggest sports star in the world, that goes with the territory,” Harrington said. “You create these stories, and in six weeks’ time, it might be somebody else’s story. We’ll have to wait and see what evolves. But the one thing that’s for sure, we’ll all be watching. As I said, that’s human nature.”

His wife's a ho. A gold digger. They deserve each other.

Woods’ has made a deal to pay his wife to stick around, including an immediate $5 million payment, Gerald Posner writes in the Daily Beast, and a revised prenup worth as much as $55 million if she stays for two more years. The couple’s original prenup gave Elin $20 million after 10 years of marriage, the Chicago Sun-Times reports; the new agreement has been shortened to seven years, meaning it will vest in just two more.

If Elin lasts another seven years, rather than just two, she’ll reportedly make $80 million total thanks to a new payment schedule spread out over the five years after the agreement vests—and it goes without saying that she’ll never be allowed to tell her side of the story.

As I see it, May be the guy made a mistake. Who knows , and who cares. If it does not pertain to pro golf ,
Then it pertains to life, His life, Her life and the childs life. Financially we dont support him, He earns his money. Therefore it is none of our business. What they ( celebrities ) do in there personal life is there business. Not the publics. These people need the media to back out of there personal life. I dont see
them chasing down Joe smoe to find out who He was doing it with when He was away from Home last week, Year or the last time he was away. It should be the same for all people celebrities or joe smoe.
Tiger, you will be as good as Phill one Day!!!!

I do wish tiger would have stopped and counted the cost of losing everything before being involved with other women. there is nothing to gain and everything to lose. maybe he was to powerful and thought he was exempt from being found out. no matter who you are ,be sure your sins will be found out. no one is an island, everything we do affects someone else. I feel very sorry for his wife and children. After great loss of influence and reputation, it will be very hard to come back and will never be where had been .He was my golf hero and I am grieved over what has happened. All of this has been very devastating. I do pray for tiger and his family .

I am 82 years old and there have been many changes in our society in my lifetime. Altough I am
not a golf participant, i love the sport and I, like many, became facinated with the arrival on the
scene of Tiger Woods. I am saddened by this news because he was a hero in every sense
of the word. Perhaps it is hard for anyone to live up to perfection. I hope Tiger and his wife can
overcome this. It will be equally hard for her and my heart goes out to her.

It is way too easy to fall prey to the media as (so many of you obviously are.) I know no more about the truth to this story than anybody else. Having said that, if it is true that he cheated numerous times on his wife then, that is flat out wrong and immoral.

Best thing he can do is:
    1. Pray for forgiveness from his wife and, apologize.
2.Apologize to the general public and move on as, he too good of a golfer (as well as a human being) and, we all make mistakes.............

Enough said!!!!!!!!! There are far more important issues in the world than this man..

It's bad enough that these guys are constantly asked about Tiger's golf game--it must be GALLING to get barraged by questions about the guy's personal life.

And on top of that, to have to deal with the negative reflection that the game's standard-bearer casts upon them.

Yikes. Tiger might be getting a pretty vicious blanket party at the next PGA campout.

Let's not pretend what has happened here. A "role model" has fallen from the good graces of the people who judge him. It's easy to judge, but, who knows what the real world of Tiger Woods is. Why do we care what he does off the course? Why do we expect our jock role models to be any different than the public in general just because they can play games better then we can.
Do I judge the clerk in the grocery store, or the policeman who gives me a ticket. I can't believe we still expect all of our jock hero's to be role models. It's ludicrious, they are just like us except they got the you get to play a game most of your life gene. Get over it people, this is real life.

This is only going to get uglier. Give these corporate slime balls time and they'll dump him. They're just trying to squeeze the last little bit of marketability out of him. Tiger will never again be given the free ride that corporate america and the american public have provided him. Can't wait to hear Johnny Miller and the rest comment on this when Tiger returns to the course. However, I know most of those weenies will bow down and take a guarded course on the subject. God forbid they be branded as a racist. I bet if daddy could reach down from the heavens he would have his hands around little Tiggers' throat for tarnishing the legend he worked so hard to thrust upon us all. However, the guy didn't steal a freight train or murder anybody----he just comitted an act (or acts) of adultery, not unlike the vast majority of us----so in time we will all let it slide and cut him a break, but don't count on ever hearing, again, the accolades betowed upon him for being in the same CLASS as Palmer, Nicklaus and the like.

This shouldnt be a public issue.Mr Woods should nt be vilified for exposing his human side.He is a young man, full of youthful energy and with money to spare. He perhaps is coming to terms with the reality of marrying relatively young, losing his father and was probably bored in the house with his inattentive wife. What with two young babies competing with him for Elin's attention?.He has conquered all in golf so what's left to excite the machismo? We should let them sort their lives out without so much intrusion.

So disappointing. I could give him a break because he is so young and he was under his father's thumb before, never got to kick up his heels. But he has a thing for skanky bar girls, just the cheapest kind. That he has been doing this for three years (at least) makes it slightly different than a mistake and more like a predilection. As I said, it is just really disappointing.

Douglas C, thanks for the rebuttal....you just said it there!

"This is not the medias fault, it's Eldrick's. He's a billionaire because we paid for him to be. It's up to him to handle it, 'cause it's his mess."

Let him handle this mess and let us not crucify him......no one can fix this problem but he and his wife alone.....we are all civilized people here (though we are not acting as such) with our own faults........and I believe we have our God and we have our values.....yes, he transgressed and he admitted to it......but weren't we thought that we must forgive? weren't we saved because we were forgiven? remember, we were born in this world as sinners.......though we were forgiven, all of us, everyone of us in this world, still have sinned.....many times in different ways......including elin herself.....including tiger himself.....but instead of letting him and his wife fix and patch things up.....most of the people here (fueled by the media) want his family destroyed......want his wife to hate him more and forgive him.....how have you forgotten that you were saved because you were forgiven......

instead of destroying tiger and his family.....let's help them rebuild...... rebuild a stronger foundation......help them rebuild the triangle of marriage with GOD at the top of it all which was initially formed when they got married......let him and elin reflect on their vows......through thick and thin....richer or poorer.......tiger became weak in spirit.....this is one of those times when tiger needs his wife......her understanding.....her courage.......her forgiveness......as a wife.....as a lifetime partner.......and as a mother to their two children........and this is a time for elin to stay really strong and fight for him.....and their family.....help him learn from this and make him strong again.....make their foundation strong again.......and she and he can start it all by reflecting back into their marriage vows.....and look into the eyes of their two children!
