Wie to play final Ladies European Tour event

  • Print

DUBAI (AP)—Michelle Wie will end her season in Dubai at the final Ladies European Tour event of the year.

Tour officials announced Thursday that Wie will be part of the field at the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters from Dec. 9-12.

The 20-year-old from Hawaii played this year as an LPGA Tour member for the first time and is No. 17 on the money list. She did not win a tournament, although she helped lead the United States to victory in the Solheim Cup.

What's funny about the whole thing is that Michelle Wie probably feels she got where she did based on her accomplishments and not her looks.

If that applied to Gulbis, Creamer and other "fit" female golfer on the tour, then I think every "man" would watch too!

Actually, I don't think it is a valid question to ask if I could beat her at golf when I criticize her poor tournament play. It would be a valid question if I was a pro golfer or I had the time to, and practiced golf an equal amount that she does.

It's analogous to if she did as a hobby what I do as a career, then expected her to perform to my level at what I do for a living. She could still criticize me if I did a crappy job in my career.

I don't claim to be a big fan of Wie, nor do I think all of the press she gets is justified, but let me recall a few years back when a player recieved numerous accolades before ever winning a professional event. This player was to be the "next big thing" coming out of the college ranks and was the recipeint of a (then huge) contract from a sports equipment company even though completely unproven. This player even failed to earn tour privileges on the first try and was ridiculed by many as undeserving of the money being thrown at him. After finally earning exempt status, he went on to become a bridesmaid numerous times over his first 5 years on tour and was again ridiculed by many as not being able to close the deal. But, after 5 years of multiple "failures" he broke out with 3 consecutive victories including a Tour Championship. After that he eventually became the #1 ranked player in the world, though only briefly. Still, David Duval has been through much the same storyline as Wie has to date. If after 5 years on tour she hasn't won anything, which I truly doubt, then all you critics can release your hatred upon her. Let's just hope that once she gets near the top, she can remain there longer than Duval. I think Duval still has the capabilities to resurface as a serious contender, and what a good thing for the tour it would be!

What male player that didn't win a tournament and was that low on the money list would get this attention, maybe she can bowl or play soccer. Or better yet, be a runway model.

Look, I am NOT a hater. I acknowledge her beauty; I recognize and applaud her skills -- I simply do NOT find this "news". What I will find "news" is who does play and where they are in the standings. It is possible that it will also be a beautiful" person and I am sure they also possess the skills necessary to be a tour player. There are other players on this earth besides Michelle Wie and Tiger Woods -- let's give them some credit. Pretty please!

Let's get our facts straight, gang. Miss Sports Media Darling, Golf Division, DID NOT "contend for medalist honors" at the LPGA qualifying school. Instead, Miss Overpublicized finished tied for seventh and SIX strokes off the leader, Stacy Lewis. And Miss Winless is NOT a kid or a teenager anymore. That excuse disappeared when Miss Almost-Should've-Could've-Would've turned 20 last month.

Slap a big set of fake boobs on her and i might care. Druling over Natalie or Creamer(love that name) is the only reason to watch the otherwise boring LPGA.

What is your index? I will bet you would get you butt kicked by Michelle in a golf match with her only using a 5 iron.

I'm going to end my season at McCormick Woods. That's sounds kind to stupid doesn't, that's what this artical sounds like. WHO CARES? There's many players who are going to end there season somewhere. But you don't hear about them. It's time to treat wie like any other lady golfer who hasn't won on tour.

Give me a break. She went through rookie school; contended for medalist honors.
Now after her first year, she's 17th on the money list. Do you know how much that is?
She's paid her dues, she's got game! Hogan hadn't won crap at her age.
She's got 20 years to hone her mental game! And it won't take that long.
She's going to be a star, and win several majors, as long as she ignores envious detractors like you!

A "wonderful year"? Once again, our BSNM (Biased Sports News Media) conveniently neglects to point out the key facts. For instance, Miss Overexposed and her so-called "stellar" performance in the Solheim Cup was against European golfers who weren't ranked higher than #20 on the LPGA money list. Miss Sports Media Darling, Golf Division, failed to make the U.S. Women's Open. And, finally, she's still the Winless Wonder with an 0-80 record as a pro (though I consider the record to be 0-81) and has NEVER won a stroke-play 72-hole tournament EVER.
