Cook wins finale, Roberts takes points title

  • Print

SONOMA, Calif. (AP)—John Cook had a tough time staying focused Sunday in the final round of the Charles Schwab Cup Championships. Loren Roberts had no such problem.

Cook spent the morning exchanging text messages with Joey Sindelar, his close friend and former Ohio State teammate who was hospitalized Saturday after having a pulmonary embolism. Then Cook went out and won the season-ending tournament by five strokes for his second Champions Tour title in three weeks.

“That kind of shocks you a little bit when one of your compadres goes down,” said Cook, who closed with a 3-under 69 to finish 22-under 266 at Sonoma Golf Club.

“That’s serious stuff. I don’t like to see anybody, friends or family, go down like that. I was thinking of him all day.”

Cook, also the Administaff Small Business Classic winner two weeks ago in Texas, broke the tournament record of 268 shared by Jim Thorpe and Andy Bean.

Roberts shook off two days of struggles for a second straight 66 to tie for sixth at 13-under 275 and win the points title and $1 million annuity for the second time in three years. He had to hold off a strong surge from Bernhard Langer (68), who also finished at 13 under.

“I played two totally different golf tournaments in one week,” Roberts said. “The first two days I really didn’t hit it very good and I really didn’t putt well. You just hate to get to the end and blow it.”

He didn’t, shooting 12 under over the final two rounds. Roberts, the 2007 points champion, said he plans to donate a portion of his winnings to a Sacramento-area school district to help keep girls’ and boys’ golf programs going.

Russ Cochran (68) finished second in the tournament. Brad Bryant (69) and Jeff Sluman (68) were 15 under, and Phil Blackmar (69) was 14 under.

After opening with a 68 on Thursday, Cook shot a tournament-record 62 in the second round and followed with a 67 to enter Sunday with a comfortable lead.

Though he continued to have a few problems off the tee, Cook stayed consistent throughout the four days and avoided getting into serious trouble. He was bogey free Sunday and had only two bogeys the entire tournament, making up for whatever problems he did have with a solid short game and steady putting.

Before teeing off in the final round, Cook received an encouraging text message from Sindelar, his college teammate at Ohio State who remained hospitalized after having a pulmonary embolism during the third round. The Champions Tour said Sindelar’s condition had improved but doctors at Sonoma Valley Hospital wanted to keep the 51-year-old for further observation.

“He said he was fine and to go finish the deal,” Cook said. “Hopefully we’ll get a chance to see him tonight.”

Cook’s lead was never really challenged.

Cochran birdied No. 8 to pull within five strokes, but Cook moved to 21 under when he curled in a long putt on the 427-yard, par-4 12th.

Cochran had another birdie on the 436-yard, par-4 15th and made a long birdie putt on the 18th, finishing second for the second time in his rookie season on the tour.

Cook birdied the par-3 17th, then tapped in for par on the 18th.

This is the last time the season-ending tournament will be held at Sonoma. The event will be played at Harding Park in San Francisco in 2010 and 2011.

Roberts wouldn’t mind a few more years in the wine country, however.

He has celebrated the points championship twice while walking off the 18th green at Sonoma and nearly missed a third in 2006 when he three-putted on the final hole.

After falling behind Langer early this season, Roberts charged back into contention with wins at the Senior British Open in July and at the Boeing Classic in Washington in August then went into the season finale with a 165-point lead.

He didn’t play well the first two rounds in Sonoma, but corrected a flaw while on the driving range late Friday night then played 12 under the rest of the weekend to secure the points title.

“For me, this might be one of my best accomplishments in golf just because I really wasn’t playing very good the first part of the year,” Roberts said. “To be able to come back and win it essentially with two-thirds of a season was remarkable to me.”

Cook is a class act and these guys can play.
Watson should have won the British Open while TIger was in the crapper all day. TIger can only win on courses where he can hit it 50 yards right or left and still have a shot to the green. He picks his courses accordingly. Notice it through the year. Never plays Colonial or any other short tight course. He knows that he won't win.
About the old guys compared to the regular tour, these old guys are straighter and smarter. But 30 yards shorter. BFD. I'm 48 and playing the best game of my life, breaking 70 a few times. I never did that when I was 30. Equipment , probably.
Seniors sure beats the wimp LPGA where they play BS 6000 yard courses where any 2 handicap male golfer would be competitive and be 50 yards longer than anyone. 430 yard par 5's .. give me a break. But Paula's pink and Gulbis' hot looks sells. By the way, does any woman in America play golf??

the champions tour is the greastest tour hands down. if people dont enjoy it there is something wrong with there brains and they need to seek medical help asap. the people who dont enjoy the champions tour are the same ones who want universal health care!! they also want higher taxes so they can sit around and smoke dope and watch the pga tour and act like they know what they are talking about. what a shame that america is turning into a sissy country that idiots can have an opion and post it so all the world can see how much of a dumbass they are. if people dont have anything smart to say they should find one of those dope smoking welfare babies and hang around them.

Why can't you people just state your opinion and be civilized about it? Oh yea,"misery loves company". People watch the Champion Tour becaused they remember watching these guys when they were younger and they liked them. I was at the Colonial when Keith Clearwater shot back to back to back 64s on Sunday to win. It was quite a feat. Why do people listen to classic rock stations? Why do people like to watch old black and white movies? Because it makes them feel good. If you don't like something change the channel!

the senior tour is worth watching what other sport can you watch champions from the past still play at a high level.. people who love the game will watch the old guys and remember when they were the best at that time. who was talking @#$% about america??? you should be tried for treason and hung by your little dick. Then we can send you to one of those backward ass middle eastern countries and maybe with gods blessing we can bomb the country your in. Bomb it so much that not even a single lizard will be able to survive in the desert for a thousand years. Your a damm fool. your probley a damm welware child who has never had to go and get a job to support all the kids you keep having. If it wasnt for the kindness of our great leaders you wouldnt have the chance to trade your food stamps for crack. the reason you dnt watch the champions tour is because your traded your tv for drugs and the only golf you get to see is when you steal money from old ladies and spend it in your local sports bar on sunday. and then they cant turn up the volume so you only get to see half of it. if it wasnt for the first tee @#$% you wouldnt even have the chance to be around a golf course. You should send 1 percent of all your welware money to tiger cause the only reason you know about the game is cause you stole it for your video game system, you lazy ass punk

Hey Smack...just wondering mind you how you know about lowering your voice and wearing your blue tooth, or are those just hearing aids...as for the rest of your rant/retoric, is is most obvious that your sports knowledge is gleaned from the inside of your beer can whilst slouching on your spotted couch from too much grease being wiped on it by your grubby fingers...I would love to do verbal jousting with it, but I don't have the time to waste while you look up some of these words, and than try and do a rebuttal...What I'm really going to do, is meet your momma and give her a good time...Remember to stay out of the fridge, your only allowed 6 meals a day from the looks of you...STUB

How the heck can you call a NO-CUT tournament a Major? There are 4 majors and they are ALL on the PGA tour and The British Open. Also STOP calling it the "Champions Tour", when it is loaded with players who did not cut the mustard on the PGA tour.

    To "Birdie74"

Thank you for your comments directed to "G smacktalk". It's welcomed by all...

My comments are addressed to the parents of young "G smacktalk". I am disgusted by the job you've done in raising your child. You've created a worthless piece of garbage. I pray you only birth the one. The trouble he brings to others must pale to the heartache and regret he has caused you. Just desserts for doing such a shameful job in teaching manners to this one!

Way to go Jay Haas! I can watch your fluid transition from the top of your swing for hours!

Congratulations to Jay Haas. I was pulling for Tom Watson, but I admire Mr. Haas and his game also.

The seniors are my favorite of progolfers to watch. I like them all and have deepest respect for all the tours. I just love the game -- the skill levels, the gentlemanliness, the scenic beauty of the courses and everything about it..

    To smaktalk:

May I remind you that no matter how "young" (or childish) you are at the present, you WILL grow old. I probably will long be gone from earth, but I would still like to hang around until you do grow old -- ten will get you twenty that you don't do it gracefully. There is an art to growing old and I believe you will lact the artistic ability to carry it off.

I thank God every day that I wake up alive that He has given me one more day of precious life. I doubt anyone as disrespecftul of others and as mean-spirited as you has much of a life to be grateful for. It might just be something worth working to achieve.

Screw the seniors. There are NO spots open through Q school. No one from the general public can qualify in the Q school and then play on the Senior tour. If you qualify in the Q school, you don't get a year on the tour, but you do get is a chance to play in the Monday qualifying for each tournament. Whoopdedoo. Well, who has the money to traipse around the country just to play in the every Monday qualifying, and maybe once in a while qualify for a tournament? These cowards (touring pros) hold all the exempt spots for themselves, and don't want any competition at all from the rest of us. They shut out everyone but themselves. I don't watch them anymore, I don't support them anymore, I don't go to the tournaments anymore. Screw 'em.

I just love to watch the experts play golf, seniors, regular tour, woman's tour and the rest. Not being able to do what they do, I can only admire their talent and dedication. I study them hard, but can't duplicate them when I play. Wish all these damn critical people would lighten up. Sure that any pro would accomodate them on the course and play for a few thousand. Of course, none of the critics would show

Gsmacktalk is an ass. don't even bother responding to guys who don'e know the game and can't break 110. These old guys can play with 20 year olds. they are not 320 off the tee, but they are not in the trees either. If I had one driver to hit for all the marbles I'd give it to Watson, not TIger.
This course isn't short and it's a par 70. Watson tee to green is just as good as anyone on the regular tour. His short game usually does him in, but not this week. And he's 60 and flat belly... works out every day.

I'm not sure where #34 was going with those comments but Tom's success must be steroid related. No damn way a 60 yr old should be this competitive. No wait! It's has to be Viagra. lol, lol...............lol.
