Tiger wins for first time in Australia

  • Print

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP)—Tiger Woods gave the record crowds at the Australian Masters everything they could have wanted with his victory Sunday, except a definitive answer when he would return.

“I promise it won’t be as long,” Woods said to yet another warm ovation.

Woods took the lead for good with a 7-iron to within four feet for birdie on the fifth hole, and he hardly missed a shot the rest of the way for a 4-under 68 and a two-shot win over Australia’s Greg Chalmers.

He won for the seventh time this year, and the 82nd time worldwide in his career. Woods now has a trophy from every continent where golf is played. Australia, the 13th country where he has won an individual event, had been the missing link.

“I’ve never won down here, so now I have won on every continent, except for Antarctica,” Woods said. “I haven’t played the Antarctica Four-Ball yet. But to have won on every playable continent, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do. And now I’ve done that.”

It had been 11 years since Woods last competed in Australia, at the 1998 Presidents Cup. Since then, he has won 13 majors and 72 times around the world, becoming the face of golf and one of the most famous athletes in the world.

More than 100,000 fans who passed through the gates of Kingston Heath gave him rock-star treatment.

Woods put on quite a show.

One day after he lost his swing and nearly fell out of contention, Woods hit every fairway and only ran into trouble when a photographer standing too close clicked twice in the middle of his swing, leading to his lone bogey.

Starting the day in a three-way tie for the lead, Woods began his final round with a 3-wood to the par-5 first hole that landed next to the hole and rolled 30 feet away, producing the first of many roars from thousands of fans surrounding the green, some of them perched in trees.

After his birdie on the fifth, he followed with his most exquisite shot of the day—from 82 yards away to a firm green just over a ridge, the pin on a slope feeding toward a deep bunker. Playing a 56-degree wedge for a flatter shot, it bounced 30 feet from the flag, checked slightly and trickled down the slope to 2 feet.

“It came off perfect,” he said.

Chalmers, who hasn’t won on his native soil since 1998, found consolation in his runner-up finish. It was one of the biggest weeks of golf in Australia, energy not felt since the glory days of Greg Norman.

He stayed within range of Woods on the back nine, but failed to convert a couple of good birdie chances and shot 70.

“It was like a football crowd brought to the golf, and for us as players, I have only experienced that a handful of times, and I’ve never experienced it in Australia at all,” Chalmers said. “That was special. It really was very exciting, and it made you play better. Even though I finished second, I’m thrilled that he’s here. I wish he would come every couple of years. I’m sure we all do.”

Asked on live television, the closing ceremony and in his press conference about returning, Woods only said, “I would love to.”

“I want to come back, no doubt,” Woods said.

He said he would go over his 2010 schedule during the holidays, although Australians are assured of at least seeing him in two years at Royal Melbourne for the Presidents Cup.

Woods received a $3 million appearance fee to play in the Australian Masters. Half of that fee was paid by the Victorian government, which estimated the economic return at $20 million.

“He over-delivered,” said Ian Baker-Finch, the former British Open champion helping out with local TV analysis.

Woods wasn’t too shabby on the golf course, either.

One week after he fell apart in the final round at the HSBC Champions in Shanghai, Woods sorted out his swing problems overnight and was precise as ever around Kingston Heath. He saved par with a 10-foot putt on the ninth, and he reached the 574-yard 12th hole into the wind with a 3-wood for a key birdie.

The only mishap came on the 13th, with a sand wedge in his hand.

“I thought I was in control of the tournament after I made that birdie on 12,” Woods said, “and then a photographer took the control right away from me.”

The photographer, standing unusually close, took two pictures in the middle of his swing, and the ball sailed right of the green. Still fuming on the par-5 14th, he failed to make birdie and left himself open to Chalmers cutting into the lead.

On the next hole, however, Woods hit an 8-iron that had the crowd buzzing during its entire flight, the cheers getting louder as it covered the flag and rolled 6 feet beyond the hole. He made the last birdie he needed.

The result was Woods slipping into a jacket after winning the Masters—this one Australian gold, not Augusta green, but it will do. He finished at 14-under 274 and earned about $250,000 from a purse that was half the size of his appearance fee.

American Jason Dufner, who received an exemption between tournaments in Asia, shot 70 and tied for third with Frenchman Francois Delamontagne (69). James Nitties, part of that three-way tie for the lead going into the last round, shot 73 to finish fifth, while fellow Australian Adam Scott recorded his second straight top 10 finish with a 69 to tie for sixth.

Asked what legacy he would leave behind, Woods smiled and said, “I got a W. That was the goal this week.”

No matter the country, the time zone or the size of the gallery, that’s one thing that doesn’t change.

yeah, the last one being quite a few years back...which was my point in the first place... that Tiger wins at a ridiculous pace sans character or grace, or whatever the hell you were babbling back there. You say i know nothing about football or golf? How do you get that? So i was lying about those teams in the mid 90's? They were a bunch of thugs and criminals and you know it. If you don't, google it. I'm not trying to change anything, fren'. I'm just pointing out that you're talking out of both sides of your face, AND that character and class and all that crap isn't required to win. Your team in the 90's proved that point.

ok ok ok, hold up, hold everything. lets back up just a minute here. No. 387, u post that its about integrity, character, class, and grace, yet you admit to being a cowboys fan??? Are u @#$% serious??? First of all, one should think that u of all people would absolutely LOVE Tiger because he wins so much, and your cowgirls haven't won anything of value in, oh what, 12 or 13 years? are your kids even old enough to remember that? Then theres the point of when fallas actually was winning. Every other week someone from that team was getting arrested, or fined or admitting to drug possession or use or something. One of the worst character teams of ALL time...in any sport. What do you tell your kids about that? You two faced hypocrite. Oh, and btw, the current version of those scrubs aint gonna win anything either.

Hey no.385, maybe if phil WOULD get angry and throw a club every now and then, or let loose with a foul word or two, it would get him fired up to win a lil more often. He always seems to have that same dopey expression on his plastic looking face. Golfers who walk around like zombies showing no emotion...SO boring. And no. 387, in case you haven't heard, actually, it IS about winning and championships.Everybody remembers who wins the most. Everybody. I don't know what planet u played sports on, but i don't want to go there.

Look he didnt win any major last year.....Every year gets tough with age....I dont have my kids watch golf when media have Eldrick on...Thats my choice.....Kids should look up to someone who has respect for the game. Not a verbal abuse athelete...MJ/Chris Evert have won and lose with class.....
Remeber when Eldrick lost in the PGA Championship...He didnt have the balls to let Yang be the last put....No respect....

Yes, Tiger does have a temper and every now and then he curses or throws a club. BUT... he's the worlds greatest active golfer and barring injury, will pass Snead and Nicklaus and Hogan and Palmer to become the greatest golfer of all time. His ocassional show of temper comes from his dedication for perfection. I don't like it, but I understand it as a guy that been playing golf for 60 years.

Most of you are far to young to remember a fine golfer named Tommy Bolt.... now that man really had a temper. My all time golfing idol is Arnold Palmer. Todays modern golfers owe so much to Arnie who made golf popular to the masses and increased prize money to unheard of levels by creating Arnie's Army of fans. You critics of Tiger, chill out and enjoy modern day golfing history being made by Tiger.

Downgrading the accomplishments of Phil Mickelson in comparing him to Tiger Woods is simply ridiculous. Obviously Tiger is the greatest golfer on the planet and has been for a long time. Does Tiger's vast amount of wins (both total and major) somehow make Phil's wins less impressive? If it does, I do not see how. Does it make him a better person or role model than Phil? No. Is he? Most of us I am sure will never truly know the answer to that. So what is the relevance of most of these posts? I see it as this. Tiger, while a tremendous talent and awesome player, occasionally throws a club or utters an obscenity. Is this the makings of a quality role model? Most probably say no. Does it take away from Tiger's legacy or how most of us view him? Probably not. It does however make some long time golf fans appreciate a player such as Phil for not only his obvious talent but also his actions on the course and his interactions with fans at events. Tiger deserves all the accolades afforded the world's best and most dominate golfer, it's just too bad he can't be a true "gentleman golfer" also. In thirty years from now I just hope that golf is still being played with the same ettiquete as when I learned the game thirty years ago.

a young 30 years old phenom; known by some as the best golfer ever. Why is this a racial issue? Maybe because golf is suppose to be a rich white male sport, looked at as a superior male sport by some. A young black man has dominated like no other. Those "@#$%'s" are superior!

TO, big deal about being on a cereal box! The cereal makers can choose whomever they want to be on their box and it is for marketing purposes. You don't know whether Tiger is interested in being on the box or not. Tiger is not hurting for money and he is quite selective of who he endorses. Phil on a box shows ays it all - we all know he is not as good as Tiger. Phil was a pro golfer before Tiger came along but Tiger has almost doubled his wins on the PGA tour. Clearly there is no comparison there! Also Tiger has 14 majors to Phil's 3, clearly not in the same league.

    TO,
Do you see Romo on a Cereal Box? You only see Romo dropping and throwing bad passes and on his Hiney below the guys that sack him. Also, Romo plays golf or rather tries to. He is probably a better golfer then he is a QB. You are not a Cowboy fan, Cowboy fans have Class.

Tiger will continue winning because he works at it. He lost his swing last week and then went to work an corrected it. That's why he won this week. He keeps working at it. Next time you go to a golfing event, follow the likes of Sabitini, Sergio, Montgomery, and see how many clubs they throw. People think it is only Tiger that does it, but the truth is that since the cameras are mainly on him (the attraction) he gets seen more. I attend a least 10 pro events every year so I see it happening. You probably only see it on TV. Go back and root for the Cowboys, they need it. December is just 2 weeks away and they will probably melt like they do every year in December.

Post 373, Phil may have beaten Tiger 4 times in a row head to head and I am not sure that is accurate, I will take your word for it, how many times has Tiger been there while Phil was at home or somewhere else. While Phil is a good golfer, but he is not in the same class as Tiger Woods. And I believe last week was the first time in Phil's career that he has beaten Tiger when playing in the final group with him, so how many times has Tiger beaten Phil head to head? I don't know why when one player does something noteworthy, we have to muddy the waters by comparing them to someone else. Clearly there is noone playing on tour today that can be compared to Tiger.

All, let the record speaks for itself. Tiger's record says he is the best Active Golf Player in the world by a very lonnnnnnnnnng shot. Chances are he will be the best Ever to the play Game when he retires. But it hasn't come yet. One can all hate or love or rent or rave, but can not deny what someone accomplished before the whole world. Just don't say things to make yourself looks and sounds like a fool.

gmanglenn/Post #376: Oh, really? Well, here's another stat for your collection:

    TIGER WOODS -- 71 PGA WINS/14 MAJORS

    PHIL MICKELSON -- 37 PGA WINS/3 MAJORS

Hey may have beat "nobody" (your misfortunate words) in Australia this weekend; however, he's sure kicked plenty o' arse over his career, and Tiger is talked about as being THE GREATEST GOLFER OF ALL TIME, not Phil...

Phil, a great golfer, will NEVER get into double-digit major wins, and won't even come close to Tiger's all-time PGA wins.
