John Daly to play in Australia

  • Print

SYDNEY (AP)—John Daly will play in the Australian Open and Australian PGA golf tournaments in December after recovering more quickly than expected from a rib injury.

The two-time major winner said Wednesday he was reversing a decision announced in September to withdraw from the Australian tournaments. A swift recovery has allowed him to return to competitive golf earlier than expected.

“My recovery from stem cell surgery has been closely monitored by my doctor and I have been cleared to begin playing competitively in two weeks,” Daly said in a statement.

“As such, I have added the Viking Classic to my 2009 U.S. schedule plus have accepted invitations to play in the 2009 Australian Open and 2009 Australian PGA Championship.

“I regret the confusion the injury process has caused but I’m relieved things have begun moving in the right direction.”

Daly will play in the Australian Open at the New South Wales Golf Club at La Perouse in Sydney from Dec. 3-6, in a field that will include Greg Norman and defending champion Tim Clark.

A week later he will join major winner Vijay Singh and defending champion Geoff Ogilvy in the Australian PGA at the Hyatt Regency Coolum course in Queensland state.

During his trip to Australia last year, Daly missed three consecutive cuts and made headlines for more than his golf.

He received a suspended fine from the PGA of Australia at the Australian Open after taking a spectator’s camera and throwing it against a tree.

Open organizers took no action, saying Daly had been bothered by the man, who was taking photos at close range despite a ban on cameras at the course.

Posting advance notice of John Daly's golf schedule is like posting advance notice of a train wreck.

Daly had considerable talent and it was fun to watch his great shortgame as well as his prodigous drives. Unfortunately now his game has declined to such a point that it is not about winning, or the competition, it is about going to see if Daly shows up drunk, takes off his shirt, quits after a few holes, punches out a fan hits a tee shot off a beer can, etc. etc. It is sad but he is now nothing more than a carnival act.

I don't play with Barbies. I merely recognize weaknesses when they hit me in the face and it is my prerrogative to NOT respect them. Many of us have OVER and OVER and OVER cut Mr. Daly some slack -- now, we have reached "our cutting slack" end. I really do not care it he does or does not play golf ever again. I don't judge him at all -- neither do I have much respect for him. That is something you must earn.

I turn my attention to sober, clean living, honest, law abiding citizens -- whether they be golfers or not.

It is SO damn tiresome hearing about Daly. All of you posters who love him, good for you. In reality he is a loser who has been given so many chances it's obscene. Season-ending surgery suddenly turns around within a month - please! Can't you even admit it's a p/r spin on something else that happened to him - speculation, but clearly something else going on here. Yes, he had and has injuries, but this stinks of something else.

And so what - it's Australia. "Tee it high" needs to get a life. "Best golfer ever" needs to get a doctor.

Me thinks the spin doctors at his management company were paid to work around the clock...If you looke back over the years with John, he never in his wildest dreams spoke this well....course, ya never know what he was sayin to those women of his,,hahaha...As for the stemcell work...Folks, my ex daughter in law had it at one of the premier hospitals in the country, and the doctors there told her they wouldn't know how successful it would be until after 3-4 months...She now, has to adhere to a daily schedule, that sure wouldn't include physical activity of any kind....I like big John and have always pulled for him to do well....but this? seems a bit much to me, sorry...For his sake, I hope he does well and gets back on track...STUB

yes I know he has screwed up in his life, But I know I have also. We can't all be perfect, even Tiger has screwed up every so often.. I'm hoping he will rise above all this and turn his life around. Have you even seen him hit a ball up close, well I have and it is an awsome sight. most pros hits goes " ping" his go "wham". I mean very loud, very loud. I think if he had his life in order he could have been the best golfer ever. So John Please, please get it together now ...its never to late. After all you have won Two Majors, which is two more than most golfers, so you have the means to make it work...I'm pulling for you and most of us golfer's are also...

Daly certainly sells tickets. On the other hand, you know he won't be playing the weekend, and maybe only one round if he melts down and walks off.

John Daly is an elite golfer. Why wouldn't they want a multiple major winner playing in their tournament? Because he used to drink? Big deal. Tiger cusses like a sailor on live T.V. Does that mean that he shouldn't be allowed to play in televised events? Give me a break. Instead of bashing on the man, all you anti-Daly folks should go back to doing what you do best... playing with your Barbies.

When will some of you learn that Daly sells tickets, this is a business and he who sells gets exempted. John Daly flat out sells tickets to golf tournaments, people come to see him play or melt down. Get over it and focus on those who can still play the game.

By the way, I have a feeling that JD would have been a much better choice for the Presidents Cup than at least three others that were playing...

I'm not really sure why Daly gets all this coverage. There are so many other exciting things going on in the world of golf right now. The Olympics, President's Cup victory, Mickelson's stellar golf as of late, Tiger not winning a major, etc., etc.. He is an over the hill, has been. He chose to screw up his life with the gambling, drinking, and the bad choice of women. Why give him the time of day any more?

Why do sponsors still sell out and give exemptions to this guy? I could never understand why he is a "fan-favorite." I have read in many places that people like him because he is an everyman. How many ordinary people do you know have lost 50-60 million dollars gambling? How many ordinary people do you know throw away such amazing god-given talent?

Yeah, sure, he is a nice guy who gives to charity but so do a LOT of other PGA pros.

He is an addict who bails out on rehab. I hope for him that he can get himself together and perhaps appear on the Seniors circuit in a few years.
