Thousands turn out for Tiger’s practice round

  • Print

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP)—The size of the gallery Tuesday at Kingston Heath was nothing new for Tiger Woods, who also played before some 7,000 people two days ago in China.

That was the final round of a World Golf Championship.

This was merely a practice round for the Australia Masters, and it showed just what kind of buzz Woods has generated in his return to Australia for the first time in 11 years.

Perhaps even more peculiar than TV network helicopters circling overhead as Woods played nine holes with Craig Parry was the sign posted at the ticket office: “Sold Out.” Australia sporting events, particularly golf, thrive on walk-up sales, and no one could remember the last time a tournament had no tickets available.

Just another day in the life of the world’s No. 1 player? Not quite.

“No, it’s not normal,” Woods said at his press conference, which was broadcast live around Australia. “Thank God it’s not normal.”

Woods is looking for a different result than from this weekend in Shanghai, when he started the final round only two shots behind Phil Mickelson and quickly fell out of contention, finishing in a tie for sixth as Mickelson won the HSBC Champions.

Woods is making his fourth appearance in Australia, which he described as one of his favorite spots in the world for golf, particularly the sandbelt courses around Melbourne.

He tied for fifth in the 1996 Australian Open at the end of his rookie season, then tied for eighth in Australian Masters early in 1997. His last appearance was the Presidents Cup in 1998, when the International team gave the Americans their only loss. Woods played Australian icon Greg Norman, beating him in singles at Royal Melbourne.

This was his first time playing Kingston Heath, which already is firm and fast under hot sunshine.

“Unbelievable golf course,” Woods said. “I always have been a huge fan of the sandbelt courses. The bunkering is just phenomenal. You never get a chance to see bunkering like this is any other place in the world. You don’t need a golf course that is 7,500 yards for it to be hard. You can build it just like this and have it nice and tricky, and it’s just a treat to play.”

Woods is being paid a $3 million appearance fee, an investment by the Victorian government that supporters say already has been returned by the massive crowds.

Rod Pampling is the defending champion, a fact that has been lost in the buildup to the tournament. Pampling, who used to frequently play practice rounds with Woods at the majors, doesn’t mind.

“I think it’s a stroke for us,” Pampling said. “It’s great for Australian golf. It’s what Australian golf needed, was to have this impact. Seeing the crowds are sold out, we haven’t had that since the days of Norman. Hopefully, this will spur on other tournaments to realize that yes, you have to spend the money to get the money back.”

The course was subdued late in the afternoon. A half-hour after Woods finished his nine holes, one fan walked out to his car and said, “Nothing more to see for the day.”

When arnie was around we didnt have the internet or the golf channel. People knew of him but its not like he was thrown in everyones face 24/7. But this is 2009, and tiger woods is basically a prisoner of his own home. He cant go to the store, he cant take his kids to the park without bringing bodyguards to make sure people dont bother him. Theres also a reason why arnie has 7 majors and tiger has 14. If tiger played better being outgoing and talkative he would play like that, but he plays his best when hes in his own world. Lee trevino said he cant play without talking, everyones diff cant knock the man when he produces. And unless you know tiger woods personally and have had enought time with him to know who he truly is as a person, dont sit here and act like u know what type of person he is.

I like to watch phil...but with no doubts tiger woods is the greatest by far. The most popular golfer worldword, the most hardworking and the most talented. As far as am concerned , he can curse as much as he wants to, he can break the clubs as much as he wants to, so what, who cares?? you wanna attack tw, go after his career wins, his major wins, his records, compare them with whom ever you want to and you will soon realize that the only thing you got left is to attack him personally. Keep on munchin on sour grapes......long live TW...u r the f........ best ever...

First this constant race issue is ridiciculous.
second maybe the guy...tiger woods just wants his privacy.
third has any of us who are competiors have not dropped the f... bomb.
forth the guy has never critized his fellow competitors has allways given credit when
he lost.....never made excuse for his play when he lost.
i am not saying he is god but considering he is probably the most recoginized athlete in the world he has handeled it pretty well.
last if you were worth a billion you would be alittle arrogant too.

Why does race have to enter into every single discussion? I feel that Troy Aikman and Joe Montana were the best quarterbacks in my lifetime. I also feel that Randy White and Dick Butkus were maybe the best defenders all time. And I think that Johnny Bench and Pete Rose were great. However, I also feel that Tiger Woods is currently the best golfer in the world and may become the greatest golfer in history. Ask Arnold Palmer or Jack Nickolas. They have both said that Tiger is the best in history. By the way, I'm African American and as far as I'm concerned, talent is color blind and speaks for itself.

I am 71 years old and I am Afro-American I have been watching golf since the middle 50's.It didn't matter to me that we only had afew Afro-American's trying to break the racial barrier, but I new In my heart that one day there would be a change. Some of us who think we are WHITE may not be, when we use color to hate or tear down remember this "what goes around always comes around". The God I serve have no respect of person and in His due time a change will come to all peoples and Nations and you haters I don't think will have any part of that Kingdom. Peace!!!!!!!

Get a life Matthew P. That's right I forgot. You don't have one since the highlight of your entire life is to be spoken to by Arnie out of the blue from 3 feet. People like you who don't know anything about golf, great athletes or life for that matter should just be quiet and stop acting like you actually know anything. The only thing you know is your own shoe size which happens to be the same as your IQ. Now go buy yourself your daily happy meal, keep your mouth closed and stop pretending you actually know anything about golf's greatest player. If you ever got within 3 feet of Tiger, he would tell you you something like this. "What's that smell?"

this is the best golfer most of us have ever seen. He does get upset with himself after a poor shot but almost immediately he starts to focus on the next shot. His consistent performance is remarkable. he does not take appearance money and not perform. his Foundation has done marvelous things so to say that he is not generous is crazy.

I bet in real life that TIger is a very, very lonely man. Money cannot buy honest friendship. And he's as arrogant as they come. Never makes eye contact on the golf course, and I doubt off the golf course as well, unless a cash deal is involved.
Arnie looked you directly in the eyes through 18 holes winning or losing and smiled and said "We'll give it a try" after I said "Go get 'em Arnie"... He did that to me out of the blue at a senior event walking between holes, 3 feet away, years back when he was competitive. So gracious. He knew the game wasn't all about him. He was a happy man just to be out there all of his life.

I agree with #13..... The guy is a huge whining club throwing jerk if he' s not winning and is the most fined player on tour... they should up the ante on those as well, like $50,000 for a f..... verbal on tour.... and they'd NEVER put a mike on him.... every other word is f........ $3,000,000 appearance fee?.. He should donate that to US states in money trouble. But he won't. He's a pig.
Family??.. He NEVER takes his family. Have you EVER seen his wife run up to him on the 18th green, babies in arms after he wins like 99% of the other guys??.... She's home shopping. And the kids are being raised by nannies. Purely a trophy wife. They don't even talk. He's so arrogant and so is she.

@ 19, your problem is with the networks, not Tiger he doesn't make anyone watch him, pay him appearance fees etc. The last I looked most TV's have that special technological wonder called a remote.
You, don't like him don't watch him, the power is in your hands. If your children watch, switch the channel when it's Tiger's turn very simple to do. The guy is the best, he comes to win every time he sets foot on a course (258 tournaments, 14 majors, 70 pga tour wins) in 13 years. I think he earns his paycheck! Consider Jack N. in 24 years (591 tournaments, 18 majors, 72 tour wins)! Wow, Tiger is working OT!
    IMHO

Yes he is talented to say the least....what I get tire of is all of the reruns on the Golf Channel....or he can be 10 strokes out of the lead and he still gets the bulk of coverage....it's almost like theres not anyone else playing if he is there....and to top it off he gets 3ml for just showing up at a tournament? That's not right. Play and earn your paycheck!!!!!

I've been watching golf since the sixties, never have I heard anyone being so agianst a winner......such as those agianst Tiger....it sounds like the same old story when one is Black.....Tiger has earned the respect of all.....you have never.....never seen a golfer as consistent as HE......though the courses change just to make it more diffecult for him and he still wins out....Now you have to really appreciate the work ethic this man displays week in and week out......so he lands a F.....bomb from time to time....we are watching a very special TALENT:

Oh Ronald my feelings are so hurt.......I'm gonna cry.....I noticed you just attacked me cause you didn't like what I said, but didn't questions the facts I said....Tiger is suppose to be an ambassador to golf but everytime he hits a bad shot he tomahawks his driver and blames a camera man.....Arnold and Jack had class, Tiger is a self absorbed ass

    Tiger's a JERK ??? ...man-o-man, that's rich !

BTW, cursing after a bad shot, or anything else is hardly unusual you jackkazz ! what's with that stuff !

Some people just can't stand the fact that a non-Anglo is the number one golfer in the world, so if they can't attack his ABILITY or GAME, they resort to a feeble attempt to try to bring the guy down "personally"............which is patently transparent to me..

So good for him getting a 3mm dollar appearance fee.....I bet your dumb butt wouldn't say anything if Mickelson got the same amount !

The fact remains, he's the best golfer in the world, right now....but like LIFE, things do change.....except for people blinded by racism and anti-Semitism......

btw, I get sick of dummies comparing Tiger Woods to a "Michael Jordan".....last information I have is that Michael Jordan's MOTHER is NOT Asian, and his father was not a mulatto.....methinks Mr. Tiger's racial background, ergo 'social/community' is nothing akin to Mr. Jordan's.....the only thing they have in common is that they both are "non-whites", and very gifted professionals........other than that Mr. TIGER doesn't HAVE anybody that is truly 'comparable'....in skill, racial composition, community/social background, upbringing, friends, girlfriends, wives, or anything ELSE.....

He's a 'maximum INDIVIDUAL', and some people (white, black, etc) just can't seem to stomach it.

Tiger, you're not only 'a Man', you're 'The Man'.....
