Fred Couples says Tiger will still be a Presidents Cup pickWhen you think about match play giants, one name and one name only should come to mind: Tiger Woods. The guy won six consecutive USGA match play events, and while his Ryder Cup record always hangs over his head, the guy still has played his tail off at the Presidents Cup.

But like everything with Tiger, that was then and this is now, and the guy's golf game is far from team worthy. The thing is, Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples doesn't see it that way, and told The Golf Channel on Tuesday that if he wants to play, he will most likely be a captain's pick.

"Tiger's a guy I want on my team," Couples said. "I can't imagine not having him on the team. If he has to be picked there will be somebody upset, because they probably had an incredible year. He'll be great to have on the team."

That statement by Couples is Tiger Woods, 2011 in a nutshell. People are so enamored by his name that they're scared to actually see what's real. Right now, Tiger isn't good enough to play on a squad sent to represent the United States. Could he perform if he went? Sure, maybe something will click. Is he good enough to eventually play in the future? Of course, the talent doesn't just disappear. But to me, this is like saying that in 2005, David Duval is still a guy you'd want to be playing. Just because he has been great in the past doesn't mean he will be now.

I know Couples has a lot of respect for Tiger, and he should. If you're a professional golfer, Woods' career is the pinnacle. He has done things that hardly anyone that's ever touched cord grips has done, but right now, in the present, Tiger seems like the wrong pick for a captain hoping to win, and I feel like Keegan Bradley or Zach Johnson have done a lot more to deserve a nod than Woods.
