Devil Ball Golf - Golf

Check that Scottish landscape above. If you think it looks foreboding, then you, friend, have absolutely no vision, and Donald Trump would fire you in an instant. Trump, you see, plans to turn that expanse of mud and heather into the World's Greatest Golf Course.

On Wednesday, work began on the Trump International Golf Links - Scotland, a new course in the Aberdeen region of Scotland. And, true to form, The Donald was properly restrained and humble in describing its opening: "We are pleased to announce that work on site will begin [Wednesday], ahead of schedule, to build the greatest golf course in history. For a golf course there are no dunes and there is no land as large and magnificent anywhere in the world."

The entire course and resort will cost an estimated $1.6 billion to develop, and as you'd probably guess given the remote appearance of the land above, it's caused quite the little conflagration there in northeast Scotland. Local residents are worried that the thousand-residence behemoth will destroy the character of their region, and have formed an organization called "Tripping Up Trump" to try to, well, trip up development plans.

But Donald Trump Jr., son of The Donald, has derided the protesters as "teenage people" engaged in "little childish stunts." Supporters of the project include the Scottish government and the nation's tourist council, as well as local celebrity Tilda Swinton, the Oscar-winning actress who played the White Witch in the Narnia films.

At the project's official site, developers take pains to address concerns right on the very first page -- TIGLS (which, I'm sure, is not their preferred acronym) will be public and will coexist with the surrounding countryside rather than bulldoze it. Plans are, of course, to bring championship golf to the area, and I'm sure Tiger and pals will eventually make an appearance -- even if The Donald has to get them there by twisting some arms. Metaphorically speaking, of course.

Why does Trump have to blow so hard on his own horn, why not just build the very best golf course you can, history will tell you whether or not it is the best the world has ever seen.

How the hell can you rate the greatest golf course in the world, if construction has just begun? that's wishful thinking at best. You can put all the money in the world on a venture and that does not necessarily make it the greatest it may be the costliest aat best.

I've read that there are 2 farmers who own land adjacent to the land Trump bought, and despite being offered 2x market price for their land, they aren't budging. Good for them! The greatest course on earth cannot be developed - it must simply become it the way St. Andrews, Augusta, Pebble Beach & Shinnecock became what they are. Trump is a corporate suit who's father made him rich. He's a "3.7" handicap, but have only broken 80 twice since February - HARDLY Old Tom or Bobby Jones. I'm not worried about a corporate "rah-rah" session evolving into the greatest course in the world: outside of Pinehurst #2, none of the top 20 golf courses in the world are corporate "resorts."

If this is going to be the greatest course ever, how is he going to be able to convince the USGA/PGA that one of his courses in the US should host a major? Agree with Kevin S that the greatest course cannot be developed.

You guys took all my ideas- the douchebag, the need for everything to be "great", etc. Just look at his Trump International courses- if they're so great, why haven't they hosted PGA majors? Look at Whistling Straits, or Sand Hills, Pacific and Banden Dunes, Arcadia Bluffs- they're all better than anything Trump has made.
I'm also not seeing how a guy who has filed for bankruptcy more than once keeps getting all these financial breaks... what's that about?
