Devil Ball Golf - Golf

This was not a good weekend to be Adam Scott. Shoot, this hasn't been a good year to be Adam Scott, but this weekend was particularly painful. Scott, as you no doubt know, is the former wunderkind -- ranked #3 in the world as recently as last freakin' year -- has fallen off the edge of the universe in one of the most precipitous drops in golf history.

But Scott got an unlikely shot at redemption from fellow Aussie Greg Norman, whose lunatic unexpected pick of Scott to join the International squad of the Presidents Cup team incited muffled laughter from all over the golf world. Norman had confidence in Scott in a way that nobody -- possibly not even Scott himself -- else possessed. Could Scott rise to the challenge? Could he, as Waggle Room indicated, remake his struggling career Michelle Wie-at-Solheim style?

Um ... no.

Scott posted a miserable 1-4 record, worst on the Internationals aside from Camilo Villegas's zero-win performance. Scott got knocked around all week, culminating in his 4-and-3 walloping at the hands of Stewart Cink on Sunday.

So where does Scott go from here? At a time when he desperately needed to be away from golf and working on his game (or at least his mental state), he got knocked around like Kimbo Slice all tournament long, and whatever confidence he had in his game is almost certainly shot right now.

It's not over for Scott, obviously; the guy's got far too much talent, and it's entirely possible that he's suffering the lingering effects of a knee injury he suffered while surfing in 2008. But the last thing he needs is more pressure, so he probably ought to go hustle some club pros in Sydney or something.

And the next time Greg Norman calls, let it go to voicemail.

Why should anyone be surprised. Adam Scott is an "average" player with only a few wins on the PGA Tour. #3 in the world golf rankings may as well be #33.

The guy is boinking Ana Ivanovic, tennis hottie extraordinaire, my mind wouldn't be on golf either. I do feel bad for his caddie , Tony Navarro , who turned downed Tiger's bag several years ago because of his loyalty to Greg Norman( who hand -picked Scott for Tony) . He's one of the best caddies around , he should at least be carrying for someone committed to thier craft.

Unlike Michelle Wie - who, despite what some say, never really did get swept up in a "Hollywood" lifestyle - I think that's exactly what happened to Adam Scott.
Whereas Wie was younger and still under the control of her family, who correctly navigated her back to serious golf once the more glitzy efforts lost their momentum, Scott was old enough that he was on his own, and/or in the hands of PR/management people who may not have had serious golf interests in mind.
The string of stars he's dated and the photoshoots / ads / Hollywoodish events he's gravitated towards... indicate that that really may be the problem, Hopefully, this President's Cup debacle may act as a wake-up call and he'll be able to get back on track not waste his talent. If that's what he wants.
I saw him at Bethpage on rainy morning during the US Open. He was all alone on the soggy putting green, and even with rain gear on he was ultra, ultra thin, Skinny. Anorexic looking. That's when I first suspected that he was going down that road.

@Sean, a few wins? Grab a clue. He's got 6 PGA Tour wins including a Players Championship and 8 International wins. That's beyond average. I think Adam will be fine. All players go though lulls in their career. He'll find it again as long as he still has passion to compete.

Sean, what are you talking about? Scott has won 12 times on the professional level. 7 of those were on the PGA Tour including the Players Championship and The Tour Championship while earning nearly $20 million dollars (not including his many endorsements). What an "average" player he is. dbldad123 and patricia have hit the nail on the head when it comes to Scotts problems.

Golf is a very tough game when you lose your confidence. Bobby Jones said that without confidence
a golfer is just a "hack". Tiger's the only current great golfer who has never been in a slump. I think it's
the most impressive thing about him in my mind. Whatever the cause of his slump, I hope that Adam
Scott turns his game around because he seems like a good guy from what I've seen and hopefully he can
    play well again.

Hey guys, let's not give the wrong end of the stick to Scott. He tried his best but he was not in form. The blame has to lie in Greg Norman who made the captain's pick. If I had to make that pick, it would go to either Rory Sabbatini, K.J. Choi or Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee who was hungry for the pick and is in great form now. But then again, the whole team as well as the captin has to share responsibility. The Americans played inspirational golf and it was fun to watch veterans like Woods, Mickelson and Perry playing alongside Mahan, O'Hair and Kim and putting on a great show. The President's Cup - like the Ryder Cup - is a wonderful team event but the point to note is that it is still only a sport and more importantly it brings all of us together. Congratulations to Couples (one of my all-time favourite players) and the Americans.

Norman sucked at being captain by being a racist and picking a fellow Aussie over a more deserving and in form player of different nationality. I am beginning to believe that he is not even aware of other International players available for the President's Cup.
He let the other players and the other golf associations around the globe down with his choice and his pairings. Granted the Yanks played well, he sucked BIG TIME.

the way I see it, Adam was an excellent choice if you keep in mind this was a team effort. Chosing someone with team experience was the only way to go. As we say in baseball, once an All Star, always an All Star

Lets face it, Greg Norman picked Adam Scott on emotion. Perhaps his seperation from Chris has infected his mind. I like Norman, but ya got to be kidding. Great Scott!!!

It WAS a lunatic unexpected pick! Great Scott wasn't even playing any great golf the last couple of months! For any team effort, you need good, gritty and dedicated golfers who put their hearts and soul into the game, not when one spends more time on photoshoots and dating super stars! Come on Norman, KJ Choi n Thongchai Jaidee or even Sabbatini are the obvious picks and u screwed up bigtime! so are you racist or sentimentally dumb!

Scott was ranked in the top 5 for some time, and really never contended in a major. His putting has always been a challenge, despite a great swing. All of us who play know how hard it is to be consistent, let alone at the level these guys are playing, and for the courses that they have to play. Bad pick by Norman- there were better choices, but this pick alone wasn't the reason that the International team lost.

Norman was nuts in nominating Scott ... captains are more inclined now to bet on the hot horse and not on reputation ... If I were Sabbatini, I would be really peaved on not being nominated over Scott ... Norman needs to go back to his wardrobe business and let someone else captain the Presidents ... it's not all fun and games, Greg.

Maybe we should all leave Adam Scott alone to figure out the problem and go back to the 24-7 Tiger love fest, man crush, shameless pandering, endless hyperbole, let's devote 45 minutes of air time to what "he had for breakfast and how all of the other players in the world wish they could have had the same." Am I the only one who finds the media coverage completely insufferable now? Funny, of all the mind-numbing idiocy written and broadcast about Woods, none of it comes from him. He just plays the game brilliantly.
