Every weekday morning, we'll serve up some of the best in the day's golf writing. Read it on your way to the first tee.
Tiger Woods just made $65K for doing nothing. "Tiger Woods is still on the injured list, but that won't stop him from earning his first check for 2009 at this week's Mercedes-Benz Championship. Woods, who hasn't played since winning the U.S. Open in a Monday playoff over Rocco Mediate in June, will earn last-place money (approximately $65,000) in Hawaii because he qualified for the winners-only event." No word on whether he's sharing any with Manny Ramirez.
The Maui News wonders whether we might be seeing one of the final Mercedes tournaments: "The Kapalua Plantation Course is set to host the Mercedes-Benz Championship for the 11th time this week. The current four-year contract between Kapalua Maui Charities, the PGA Tour and Mercedes-Benz USA runs through next year's event, Jan. 4-10, 2010. After that - with the gloomy economic climate threatening to wreak havoc on the golf industry - the event's future at Kapalua appears to be anyone's guess."
Waggle Room gets a lesson from Jim McLean: Ryan over at Waggle Room recently chatted with teaching pro Jim McLean, who just released an eight (!) DVD series of golfing instruction: "We also talk about the modern technologies of clubfitting and video swing analysis. Finally, we touch on the impact of the USGA's grooves regulation on amateurs." Check out the YouTube video version; it's like hypertext for an interview.
A club with wings? It's true! "With the new 5DX Ironwood, Nickent Golf introduces its latest breakthrough in hybrid shaping and performance. With this fifth-generation design, the Nicket has produced an all-stainless steel hybrid with a new geometrical shape that places discretionary weight at the extreme perimeters of the clubhead. New 'wings' on the back of the clubhead were designed by Nickent master designer John Hoeflich to optimize the center of gravity and increase the Moment of Inertia for superior forgiveness. The increased MOI, which surpasses that of most fairway woods, plus stronger lofts means a significant increase in distance." In other words, buy this and you've got zero excuses, champ.
