Devil Ball Golf - Golf

For some golfers, drama just accompanies them like another club in the bag. Leading that list on the women's side is Michelle Wie, who's got herself another couple of moments to add to the ol' scrapbook.

First off, if you'll remember, a couple weeks back Wie's camp trumpeted the news that she'd signed with IMG, the management agency that represents golf's titans, like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Annika Sorenstam and so many more. Well, apparently this wasn't a case of Wie deciding to separate from former agency William Morris; no, according to Steve Elling at CBS Sportsline, she was booted.

This is absurdly dull business stuff, but as Elling notes, the basic details are this--WMA, like most agencies, signs its clients to successive one-year deals because the likelihood is so high that the public will fall out of love with its celebrities. When Wie's contract with WMA came up for review last year, the agency didn't re-sign wie, but her existing agent worked with the Wie family -- until it was discovered that the Wies were trying to work a side deal with a sports-drink company without WMA's knowledge or input. (How exactly did they think that wouldn't get discovered?) At that point, it was seeya, Michelle, and IMG became the only option. The point of this? The Wie family yet again put Michelle in another awkward position, another hole.

And although it wasn't her fault, Ron Sirak at Golf Digest's Local Knowledge blog points out that she almost caused another controversy at this week's J Golf LPGA International. Asked her impressions of the Papago Golf Course, she mentioned that she played nine holes on Saturday. Problem is, there has been a rule in place that golfers at an LPGA event can't play the tournament course until after 5 p.m. on the Sunday before the tournament.

Fortunately for -- and also because of -- Wie, the rule has been changed to Friday before the tournament, meaning Wie didn't break the rules. That rule was, ironically enough, changed because Wie had a habit of showing up and playing courses ahead of time, but she wasn't violating rules because she wasn't an LPGA member at the time.

Wie has had all kinds of problems with rules, but this one doesn't appear to be her fault. Still, the last thing she needs these days is even a whiff of controversy ... even though it still follows her like cheap perfume.

[Note: Apparently some readers missed the link to Elling's article above referencing the firing. I've added a reference to Elling as the writer of the original piece. Full credit for uncovering that story goes to him, of course.]

It has long been evident that Michelle wie and her parents have thought that rules are for everyone else. Yes, include Michelle in that group. She will skirt the rules at every opportunity. How about her mysterious injury when she was in danger of losing her exemption. She and her entourage better figure out, in a hurry ,that the LPGA will do fine without her.

I was watching the tournament for a bit on Golf Channel last evening and it was extremely easy to pick her parents out of the gallery. They were the ones standing straight up, arms folded, seemingly glaring at Michelle. Once they putt hit the bottom of the cup, they sprinted away to the next tee. To be successful, I think she really needs to keep her parents out of her business/sport life. (well, try anyway) Otherwise, she will never get out of the kid at Little League with the crazy parents rut.

I agree with all three post's And it's sad to see the look of disgust on her fathers face when she misses those 16 ft. downhill right to left putts by 3 in. On the other hand, I know I'd have trouble trying to remember all these dumb rules that are still on the books. I know, I know, She's making enough money to remember or learn the rules. but I think she's going to outweigh the negatives real quick.

Wasn't it David Feherty who said that Christianity only has ten rules and golf has 600 pages of rules? Remembering what time you can practice is like when you can check into a hotel. Was it check in at 11 and out by 3, or was it the other way around?

I have said before in these blogs that she will not be a true contender until she gets her parents out of her career business, so i say again to M wie, i know you love your mom and dad but you need to break free, they are ruining your chances of real sucess at every turn in your young life, so before you get to far stand up for your independence, and do it NOW, they are killing you very slowly.

Are you sure that Michelle Wie's father isn;' Richard Williams i.e the father of Venus and Serena Williams?
This girl needs to bite the bullet and start thinking for herself, and surrounding herself with smart decision makers. Her parents deserve credit for getting her this far, but they are now doing her, and her career more harm than good. The Wie novelty has worn off thanks to consistently bad decisions and direction from her parents.
To me it is obvious that Wie is absolutely clueless in regards to common sense. She grew up in a bubble and has had every decision made for her, and now that she is in the real world, she has no idea how to function as an independent young woman. Michelle is an adult, and it's time that she started acting like one.

Jay, can you tell me how the controversy in regards to Wie playing 9 holes on the Saturday prior to the tournament WASN"T or ISN"T Mchelle's fault? For the life of me I cannot figure out why you are saying that it is NOT her fault. Who's fault is it that she broke an established LPGA rule? Was she forced to play the 9 holes on the Saturday at gun point?

The article states that Ms. Wie did NOt break the rules. Whether rules were changed because of her habits-or not- if none were broken then there is no issue. As for her parents or anybody's parents --- No one chooses their own--
Some of us get lucky . Others draw idiots-or worse. In Ms Wie's case though she was no doubt mistaken for a
$ sign at least she must have some of those dollars and could have done a hell of a lot worse.
I am not a fan of Ms. Wie but I don't feel she should be battered by the media or anyone else for every trifling incident that occurs in her life or her career.
I mean just give the gal the benefit of the doubt once in a while !!!

The entire golfing world is tired of Michelle Wie. She is not a good golfer, bit has been let to believe that she is the best in the world. She can't follow the rules of golf, nor can she win at golf. We as a public is very upset just to hear her name on TV, as she has NOT earned that right as of today. All news media must stop talking about her as she is not one of the best golfers.
She and her parents should just fade away, all three are major problems for the real good lady golfers.

I like Michelle Wie and I hope she does well but her parents are a definite burden and lpga commisioner Carolyn Bivens needs to get a backbone. I'm not sure if Bivens is the right person for the lpga commish role. She has changed rules for Wie and her "english only" policy was a fiasco.

I hope that michelle goes on a tear this summer and wins 4 or 5 in a row. That will cause a few
people to shut up and let her play. So she lost her management co., big deal, businesses make
changes all the time. Her parents need to give her some space, maybe that's why she's going to
Stanford, to get away from them a little.

Her shorts are too tight this week. They are skin tight. Honestly, they take away from the game. Please dont degrade the LPGA into a sport of "hotties". Thank God Natalie Golbis is never on the top of the leader board! All you would see are her perky boobs. Right now, I've got my money on Paula Creamer. She's smart, she looks great without over doing it, and she is a great competitor. Go Paula!!

I believe there is a very good chance that Michelle Wie will go down as the biggest bust in professional golf, male or female. What most people do not realize is she never played the countless number of junior golf tournaments growing up like most of the girls on tour. The point is she never learned how to win golf tournaments at a young age probably because she grew up in Hawaii. It's extremely evident in her game today. Also the biggest shame comes in how mismanaged she is by her parents? She will never be a superstar like Annika or Lorena.

Is she playing this week? No where you can find her name on the leader scoreboard, at least not the top 15 after 2 rounds.
