Devil Ball Golf - Golf

Every weekday morning, we'll serve up some of the best in the day's golf writing. Read it on your way to the first tee.

Does David Toms belong in the Hall of Fame? "For those who believe 40 is too young to be considered for the Hall of Fame, consider the plight of David Toms. He was put on the PGA Tour ballot when he turned 40 because of his 12 victories (one of them a major) and 10 years on the PGA Tour. Toms received 1 percent of the vote in 2007, and he didn't receive any votes last year. Because he did not receive at least 5 percent of the vote in consecutive years, he was taken off the ballot this year. 'I don't even think of the Hall of Fame until a guy turns 50, until he's almost done in golf,' Toms said. 'That's more fair than throwing someone like me on the ballot just because I meet the criteria.'"

AK without Hope: "Anthony Kim withdrew from the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic because of a sore left shoulder, leaving the tournament without a player ranked among the top-15. Kim won twice last year and was an emotional leader in helping the Americans win the Ryder Cup. He spent his last few years of high school in the Palm Springs area and considers the Hope his hometown event." Oh, boy.

Teenager to play Arnie's Bay Hill: "Ryo Ishikawa might have been more nervous reading a personal invitation from Arnold Palmer than when he won on the Japan Golf Tour at age 15 to become the youngest champion on any recognized tour. Ishikawa, a 17-year-old sensation who already has risen to No. 60 in the world, has accepted a sponsor's exemption to play in the Arnold Palmer Invitational on March 23-26 at Bay Hill Club in Orlando, Fla."

New PGA election about to commence: "The new 16-man Players Advisory Council has been selected, and now it's time to pick a chairman, who next year will graduate to the tour's policy board. The candidates for PAC chairman are Davis Love III, who has previously served on the board, and Paul Goydos. 'I'm running on the platform that anyone whose last name begins with a "G" gets a lifetime exemption,' Goydos said. Goydos isn't sure how he was picked to be a candidate (they are chosen by the four players on the board), but he agreed to have his name on the ballot."

I am surprised that Busbee did not go into the fact that Toms spent the last few years taking care of his heart condition that he unexpectedly found out at Quail Hallow.
Toms looks to be in good form both health and with his golf game. I expect him to return to his good form this year.

$ellus, good point, though for this post I was just linking to a news source, not doing any original writing on my own. I'm a Toms fan; would like to see him come back strong.

Personally, I think they should change the rules. I don't know all of the criteria but many tour players, especially as of late, are still very successful well into their 40's. No players should be on a ballot until at least age 50 regardless of victories. It's kind of like putting A-Rod in the MLB hall of fame this year or Tom Brady in the NFL hall of fame. Just doesn't make sense.

toms is one of the all time great wedge players.12 victories is also impressive, but i think the hall(in any sport)should be reserved for players after retirement.
