Devil Ball Golf - Golf

The PGA season is already underway -- I know, we can't believe it either -- and we'll spend the next nine months in golfing heaven. But which storylines will dominate the year? What will we be talking about in Augusta, on Independence Day, and at East Lake? We've got your answers right here, friends. We start with the obvious, so we can get it out of the way:

1. Tiger's coming back. Yes, yes, yes, Tiger's returning, greatest player in the game, blah blah blah. You know it'll be the dominant story in golf, if not all of sports, when he steps back onto the first tee on Thursday of the Masters. Let's move on.

2. Anthony Kim: The real deal? David Feherty calls him "the best young golfer I've seen since Tiger." No pressure there, AK, none at all. How will Kim bear up under the weight of being golf's Next Great Hope?

3. Paddy's stake. The reigning two-time major champion is Padraig Harrington, and he'll be going for the "Paddy Slam" (ouch) at Augusta. Regardless of who's in the field, winning a major is a phenomenal achievement, winning two in a row almost unthinkable. But everything's reset now, so can Paddy handle Augusta for the first time?

4. Golf on TV. How much is too much? How much is not enough? When even AK admits that he uses golf as a good nap aid, maybe it's time to reassess our sport's television presence. What can be done? Hell if I know, but the status quo is never a good idea.

5. U-S-A! U-S-A! The Ryder Cup last year was nothing less than a rebirth of American golf. We got ourselves a few new stars here stateside, and perhaps a resurgence of interest in the sport. It'll be interesting to see how golf can hang onto the fans who tuned in to see pony rides and Valhalla celebrations.

6. Vijay Part Deux. Not since the days of Wally Pipp has someone capitalized so effectively and definitively on a co-worker's absence. Everybody lathered praise on Vijay Singh last year as he stormed his way through the FedEx Cup. Will the sweet-swingin' Fijian have enough in the tank for an encore performance?

7. Economic woes. The PGA signed up quite a few sponsors to contracts that end this year and next. How many of those sponsors are going to be shelling out the coin to stay in the game? The 2010 and 2011 schedules could have more holes than a 24 storyline.

8. Babes on tour. All too often, Tour newbies look stamped straight out of the usual upper-crust, stiff-upper-lip mold, capable of only the most basic of human emotions. Not so now, and it'll be interesting to see how these (relative) newcomers to the national scene reshape the face of golf. Will Boo Weekley bring in hordes of golf-crazed Southerners? Will Kim rally the frat-boy population? Will Camilo Villegas bring in hordes of Hannah Montana-age girls? (Sweet heaven, let's hope not. That way leads to bad AK-Camilo fanfic, and nobody needs that.)

9. Phil vs. Steve. You may be sick of the Steve Williams-vs.-Phil Mickelson feud, but the rest of the world isn't quite as golf-savvy as you are, you Devil Ball reader you, which means we'll be hearing about this nonsense from the moment that Phil and Tiger share a tournament to -- well, to the moment Phil wins another major, probably. And let's not forget the subplot here -- fading Phil, as Ark notes in a column. How much time does Phil have left to compete in majors, really?

10. Power of the People: The twin surges of John Daly and Tiger Woods were shots across the snooty bow of The Powers That Be in golf, but outspokenness and personality are all too often the exception rather than the rule in this game. However, with the new crop of golfers comes a new emphasis on fun over etiquette; guys like Boo Weekley, J.B. Holmes, Hunter Mahan and AK are demonstrating that you don't have to have a country-club soul to succeed at this game.

All right, your turn. What do you see as the big storylines for 2009? What storyline -- besides you-know-who's return -- would you like to see go away?

You got it backwards - Wally Pipp was the VICTIM.

I hope Vijay gets a win or two and does well in the rest of the tournaments. That's all that can be expected of him at his age. Tiger will win a few and the rest will be divided among the rest. I doubt if Paddy will have a repeat season even if Tiger isn't in the field. Tiger will win at least one major but not the first one as it will take awhile to get back in form. Tiger is the best player but Vijay sure stood tall against the rest of the pack during his absence last year. Let's hope he can compete again this year.

Fartknocker??? Are we eight years old? Poser??? What's he posing as? The greatest golfer in the world right now? Don't get me wrong, I like John Daly but the only place he is going back to is the bar to get another drink. Way off base, Superman... sorry.

actually, Matt, he said "since the days of Wally Pipp" not since wally pipp.... so the author was correct. He was stating the fact that Wally had only something to do with it. its better writing than saying "since the days of Lou Gherig"

Ban all interviews after the round is over please:
Interviewer: So how was it out there?
Golfer: You know, it was rough.
I: What's it gonna take to win the tournament?
G: Try to hit as many fairways and greens as possible. Hole a few putts....

Recovery from drugs and alcohol is possible, a new way of life is available to anyone who wants it. John Daly can and will be back. His story brings realism to the sometimes stodgy golf environment. If the fame and money from golf is too much for John, he may need to take a good look at it and decide that that carreer is no longer something he should participate in. Only God knows, and John needs to rely on a Higher Power of some sort in order to get healthy.

I think a significant story line could be the number of PGA players committing to the Euro PGA tour. That will be interesting. I personally like the idea, getting exposure to courses and players around the world, and seeing that there are great players on all tours. Not as deep as the PGA, but still have great players. I'm sure Finchem cringes at the idea of stars splitting time, although he pretends inpublic that he's all for it. He belittled Greg Norman's idea of a world golf tour years ago, and then the following year created the WGC events. He can't control this one though.

i'll address only the ones that amuse me.
    1. Tiger's coming back. Again my rankings:
    1. Eldrick 2. PGA Tour (Fed-Ex cup is for #2 plyr in world)
    3. Nationwide 4. lpga
    3. Paddy's stake. Good one Jay. I guess i'll order the "Paddy Melt" when Eldrick returns.
    4. Golf on TV. Use playboy models as beer cart girls for the players. Non english speaking caddies. Miss South Carolina as an on course reporter. After all golf is a recreation and not a sport.
    6. Vijay Part Deux. I Love the big fijian. Best #2 in world
    7. Economic woes. Again we all know how hard it is to live on $2 million a year.
    10. Power of the People: Finally, Bushwood CC is coming to an end?
I thought Boo's comment on the "Turban" was great. Let's relax people. You know how silly us "U.S. Americans" can get. Now I'm going to the course and hope I can get my drive past the womans tees...oops! forward tees.

I think if the economy continues its slide, your going to see Majors on pay-for -view to try to keep the purses fat.
Not for this year but 2010. Same for some Nascar events. Big companies just wont have the cash!!

As soon as they go pay-per-view, they will find out that we don't have the money or wont put out our money to see the Superstars. So maybe they'll have to take a pay cut.

Woods won't wait until Thursday at the Masters to show up, He wants to win the thing and he'll get in shape at least a month ahead of time, playing twice, and taking the week before the Masters to fine tune, so don't look for him at Shell Houston Open. Count on him at Bay Hill and Doral, just to get ready , but taking it easy and working on making the cuts there.

Thats good possibility the idea of a pay per view broadcast but I hope Tim Finchem understands that will kill the tour. I would hope regular events would have sponsors to keep them alive but the majors and PPV is very likely . I'd pay a reasonable amount like $6.00 a day but I wouldn't pay to see a regular event. And the sponsors that the tour needs only offer high ticket items like BMW's and Mercedes Benz's. Certainly something can be done.

There is no way golf is going the PPV route. So few people watch it free as it stands and making people watch it would kill viewership. Yes, even the majors. The main reason corporations love sponsoring this sport is because they love the target market/viewing audience (middle to high income, slightly to very affluent) and that's not gonna change. But the numbers? Get real. Maybe they're gonna ask for a break in terms of how much they can give but they will still give. They can't afford not to because maintaining market share is a primordial consideration right now.
As for the top story of the year, I think that it has to go to Tiger's return for now, but if Paddy wins the Masters, I think Paddy going for his Slam will be the biggest covered news event in golf for the year.
