Devil Ball Golf - Golf

Welcome to Teeing Off, where Yahoo! Sports golf editor Michael Arkush and Devil Ball Golf editor Jay Busbee take one topic and spray it all over the course. Today's topic: are we entering the post-Tiger era?

Arkush: I won't exactly go that far, but I do believe we have seen the best of Mr. Woods. He will never win three majors again in a season, as he did in 2000, and he won't dominate the way he did in 2006 and 2007. Will he win his share of tournaments, even majors? No doubt. But the quest to surpass Nicklaus will not be as automatic as we once assumed, and catching Sam Snead in total tour victories (82) will also take longer than we expected, if it happens at all. Tiger is only 33, but he is an old 33 in golf terms considering the wear and tear on his body. One other factor: The young players starting to make their mark comprise a more talented generation than the one Tiger has consistently outdueled.

Busbee: There are two ways to look at Tiger's come-from-behind win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and subsequent misfires. He's either the greatest golfer who ever lived but he's still getting readjusted to having spent eight months off the course, or his best days are behind him, and the big wins are going to be fewer and farther between. I tend to hew to the former, until we know differently. Something's not right with Tiger's swing, and whether that's from too much coaching, too little coaching, too much thinking, too little thinking, too much time off -- you get the idea. We just don't know. You make a great point about the heat being applied to Tiger from the next generation, but I'm reserving judgment as to whether he's ready to be pushed offstage. Ark, what do you think the point is where we can definitively say his best days are behind him?

Arkush: We have reached that point. Again, that is not to suggest that he still won't be the best player in the game for another half-decade or so; none of the other usual suspects (Anthony Kim, Rory McIlroy, Camilo Villegas, etc.) impress me as someone with the staying power to take over his throne. The fact that he won't be as dominant as he was from 1999 to 2008 only illustrated how incredible he was during that period. He set a standard which may never be equaled by anyone ever again.

Busbee: Amen to that. If this is indeed Tiger's point of decline -- and it's going to come sometime, whether it's now or in 2048 -- well, it's time to enjoy every round he plays, no matter how well or poorly he measures up. I get the feeling that when he's done, he's going to be done-done. No Champions Tour, no Willie Mays-in-a-Mets-uni embarrassing himself. Still, I'm not ready to call Time of Death on Tiger's career just yet. I want to see how well he plays when he's got the knee-surgery cobwebs cleared out once and for all.

All right, your turn. Are Tiger's best days behind him? Have your say.

I am not impressed with Arkush to start with so what he says can not hold water for me. I am impressed with some of the 'young guns'. I see the press for Mcllroy about the same as for Michelle Wie, they are good but not that good yet.
I see Tigers problem at this time being his bigger upper body that seems to have changed his swing and that he is not 100% confident with his 'new' knee, and of course his driver turning on him.
I would like to see him go back to the stinger because most all drives with it were in the fairway.
As bad as be played this past weekend, and Sunday playing very kwappy, to still finishing 8th says a lot.
Tiger is not done and will get better.
The Great Jack said it took him 7 or 8 tournaments to get his game and confidence back after knee surgery and he was out for only 17 days. Not 8 months.
That is my view and I am sticking to it. lol

Guys, how many times do we have to venture down the same, "Is Tiger's reign in the rearview?" road and watch it lead, yet again, to the same destination (being a confident, "No")? Tiger has adapted before, he will adapt again, and we'll all be feeling silly by Fall '10.

Much like the Ducks going all the way (good morning Chargers) that is just crazy talk. Guys are definitely stepping up, but Tiger isn't done just yet. I would think that he was so used to compensating for his bad knee so long, that it hasn't sunk in that it is stronger than ever. If you can't quite trust that 100%, your mechanics will suffer. Give it some time, he will get back to always being in the last couple of groups on Sunday.

Folks, keep in mind--NOBODY is saying Tiger is done. Ark's arguing that he's starting his inevitable decline. Yes, he will win more majors. But at the same rate as he has in the past? That's the quesiton.

Wouldn't it be great if he came back just a little better than everyone else? We could see some great Sunday battles and may the best man win. I didn't sense the fear of Tiger being on the course last Sunday from the other players and that's a great sign too. Those who fell off the board were probably just lucky to be there for three days anyway. I'm not the biggest Tiger fan but I sure don't want his career to end anytime soon.

Tiger will let you know when his swing is gone and he no longer dominates the tour. He will know long before any of us. He will host the AT&T, Tiger Jam and have dinner on Sunday night prior to the Masters. Otherwise, you may only see him once or twice a year.

Okay Guys, IF his skills did decline should he hang around for years and try to get the 19th or retire on top of his game?

Toughest thing about being Tiger is that he is always compared to himself. You won't see another Tiger Slam or a 2000, but he still has plenty of Major wins left in him. If he wins 1 or 2 majors every two years, is he still not the best golfer? He'll pass Nicklaus if he has to play on two broken legs and he'll have another great streak soon.

I still maintain that he is still not used to having two good knees. And, people are less intimidated by him. (with the exception of the German guy on Sunday)

I think Tiger needs to fire Hank. Not because he isn't a good teacher but just because he needs to do something to shake things up a bit. I'm not saying that Hank is the problem or a different teacher is the solution, I just think a change is needed and that's a pretty good place to start.

Go Chargers - I love "The Haney Project" and I was thinking the same thing last night while I was watching it. It does seem like Hank has to put in a lot of time for this and that has to annoy Tiger a bit doesn't it? Maybe I'm reading too much in to it, I like the show though and am totally hoping Charles can pull off a miracle and get his game back because if I had his money I probably would have snapped about 20 drivers over my knee by now if I hit like that all the time. Go Chiefs! Had to get that in there.

I don't know if it annoys Tiger because Tiger and Sir Charles are friends, and the may have been taped when Tiger was off for his 8 months. But who knows for sure.
I like to see the Chiefs win, just not when the play the Chargers. :)
