Monday and Tuesday mark the return of the Tavistock Cup, the annual brawl to settle it all between country clubs that are home to dozens of phenomenally successful, talented and wealthy golfers. And while the Tavistock gets plenty of grief from those outside the ropes, with complaints about exclusivity and limited access, news flash: these people move to country clubs to get away from people like the rest of us. We're not the type that takes helicopters to work, you see, like Ian Poulter there above.
Anyway, yes, it's a pat-ourselves-on-the-back event, but most of golf is that way anyway, and at least this one gives all kinds of money to charity. This time around, the golfers have been broken out into four teams:
Team Albany: Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Ian Poulter, Justin Rose, Arjun Atwal and Trevor Immelman.
Team Isleworth: J.B. Holmes, Robert Allenby, Stuart Appleby, Sean O'Hair, Brian Davis and Lee Janzen
Team Lake Nona: Graeme McDowell, Retief Goosen, Ross Fisher, Peter Hanson, Henrik Stenson and Oliver Wilson
Team Queenwood: Adam Scott, Darren Clarke, Thomas Bjorn, Paul McGinley, David Howell and Soren Kjeldsen.
If this were 2004, I'd say Team Albany would win in a walk, but since it's not, I'm thinking Lake Nona has the edge. And you?
The Golf Channel is treating this like an actual tournament, with broadcasts from 12-5 Eastern both Monday and Tuesday, and the full broadcast team (Lerner, Nobilo, Fehert, McCord et. al.) out on the course. Watch and see; it's the closest you're going to get to these neighborhoods.
