As the Presidents Cup approaches, we look back at the history of the event. Today: one of the Cup's finest moments.

The 2003 Cup was, hands down, the most dramatic in the short history of the tournament. Delayed a year because 9/11 forced postponement of the Ryder Cup, the 2003 match took place at the Links Course at Fancourt Country Club in South Africa. Captains were Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, and the honorary chairman was South African President Thabo Mbeki

With both teams trading punches, it all came down to the final two matches, with both teams holding 16 points apiece. In the penultimate match, Tiger Woods knocked off Ernie Els 4 and 3 to put the U.S. up by one. And in the final match, Robert Allenby vs. Davis Love III, the U.S. had a one-hole lead with one to play. All Love had to do was halve the hole and the Cup would belong to the United States. He couldn't do it, and the Cup went to a tiebreaker.

In Ryder Cup play, a tie means the Cup stays with whoever held it last. In Presidents Cup play, it's a showdown. Before the matches even began, the captains picked who they'd play in the case of a tiebreaker. No surprise -- Woods versus Els, again.

But this time around, Els didn't fade so easily. After three playoff holes, including a third hole that saw each player facing long, dramatic putts, and ...

Finally, the match was called on account of darkness, and the teams split the Cup. (Read the full account right here.) It was a singular day of sportsmanship, and amazingly, U.S. golf fans couldn't even view it live, seeing as how it was on tape-delay. Even so, it was a singular moment in Presidents Cup history.
