Devil Ball Golf - Golf

How much did you pay for your last golf club? $200? $500? $25 at a garage sale? No matter what you paid, it didn't cost you more than one tiny little club cost Jim Furyk at the Barclays this weekend.

Golfers are allowed 14 clubs in their bags, of course, but Furyk discovered the offending 15th as he was approaching the second green. He was docked four strokes -- two for each hole that he carried the club -- and as a result dropped from sixth to 15th place, a decline which cost him $131,250 in prize money. Ooof.

The temptation here is to blame Furyk's caddy, Fluff Cowan, but as Furyk notes, it was a chain of events that set off this costly penalty. Furyk had considered using a different wedge but decided not to, but because of rain the cover was on his bag right until the last minute, and neither he nor Cowan checked to confirm everything was on the up-and-up. (Not that he, you know, shot up a strip club or fought dogs or anything, but this is golf, and such matters are no laughing matter. Seriously. Stop laughing.)

Anyway, Furyk did the right thing and didn't heap it all on Cowan, though he didn't exactly absolve Fluff either: "We've been through too much together for a long, long time. He's been on my bag for over 10 years. He does what he does. He shows up on time. He's a good person and he's a good caddie. The last thing I want anyone to do is blame it on Mike. The fact that we both made the error is what surprises me. That's the shocker. I can see one person being a bonehead for 30 minutes, but two people is disappointing."

So there you go. Forgive, forget, and try not to think of that new Bentley that a miscounting just cost you. Now, if it was me, I'd have considered staging an impromptu epileptic fit on the green and get my caddy to toss the club in the bushes while all eyes were on me. But then golf is supposed to be honest and all, so I guess Furyk did the right thing. But I wouldn't be surprised if Fluff Cowan's Christmas bonus is a little lighter this year.

Quite dumb on Furyk's part and certainly no fault of Fluffy . Kind of like old Sammy Sosa keeping a corked bat around just for entertainig the fans in B.P.
If you don't know what is in your bag it would be a good idea to have a look sometime before you start a round . Furyk is not a particularly bright guy but he should be able to count to 14 and then stop ramming more in there for Fluff Ball to lug around for 5+ hours

awwwwwww come on!!!!!!! there is no reason that i can think of that can explain why you should only allow a player 14 clubs! well sure i only carry 8 clubs but pga players are the best of the best! they know what clubs they need in the situation that they were in! this is a STUPID rule that should be stopped! why is the rule even out there?!? to make it easier for the caddies??? to make the caddies walk faster so the other golfers don't get held up?? heck no!

Does the ball retriever count as a club?
It is the utensil I use most on the course.

I don't think Mr. Furyk will penalize Fluff for the miscue. The GOLFER is responsible for what's in his bag. The last thing he should have done on the first tee is count his clubs to make sure he was legal.
Limit is 14 and you've got 15 in there? That's not the caddy's fault. He does what you tell him to do.
As for golfers being 'nancies'... let's see YOU hit a drive 300 yards. Doesn't have to be straight, just 300 yards in length. I'll bet you a lot of money right now you can't do it... Nancy.

I applaud Mr. Furyk for displaying honesty, integrity, and good sportsmanship. These are the qualities I'll try to teach my son, in whichever sports he plays, or anywhere if he chooses not to play.

Jim has millions and millions. The only thing he would care about is if he won or lost a tournament because of a rule infraction. If he is worried about the money, he must be one sorry tight wad.

Jay it was an interesting story, but please for the sake of print journalism take the first person commentary out of your stories. It doesn't add to the story. It takes the way the purity of what the story is about in the first place. Just end the story on the quote or comment by others affected.

You are a bonehead too. Of COURSE the caddy has to bear some of the blame. The CADDY is responsible for putting the clubs in the bag, cleaning them before and after a round, checking them for damage, handing them to the golfer and replacing them after the shot. Furyk is being quite generous by not laying MORE blame on Fluff. And BTW.....Where do you come off questioning Furyk's intelligence? You don't know him. Also, this instance has absolutely NOTHING in common with Sosa's blatant cheating. Furyk wasn't trying to use the extra club to his advantage. Your analogy is badly lacking. The golfer and the caddy were in error and paid the price.....That's pretty much it.

honest mistake, and you are allowed 14 clubs to help keep the playing field even.what if you could bring a club for every situation what fun would that be.its like hunting you bring 1 or 2 guns for deer, but there are alot of other animals in season, are you gonna bring what you need for everything or just your deer rifle?BTW I've had drinks, feel free to correct me.
