How much did you pay for your last golf club? $200? $500? $25 at a garage sale? No matter what you paid, it didn't cost you more than one tiny little club cost Jim Furyk at the Barclays this weekend.
Golfers are allowed 14 clubs in their bags, of course, but Furyk discovered the offending 15th as he was approaching the second green. He was docked four strokes -- two for each hole that he carried the club -- and as a result dropped from sixth to 15th place, a decline which cost him $131,250 in prize money. Ooof.
The temptation here is to blame Furyk's caddy, Fluff Cowan, but as Furyk notes, it was a chain of events that set off this costly penalty. Furyk had considered using a different wedge but decided not to, but because of rain the cover was on his bag right until the last minute, and neither he nor Cowan checked to confirm everything was on the up-and-up. (Not that he, you know, shot up a strip club or fought dogs or anything, but this is golf, and such matters are no laughing matter. Seriously. Stop laughing.)
Anyway, Furyk did the right thing and didn't heap it all on Cowan, though he didn't exactly absolve Fluff either: "We've been through too much together for a long, long time. He's been on my bag for over 10 years. He does what he does. He shows up on time. He's a good person and he's a good caddie. The last thing I want anyone to do is blame it on Mike. The fact that we both made the error is what surprises me. That's the shocker. I can see one person being a bonehead for 30 minutes, but two people is disappointing."
So there you go. Forgive, forget, and try not to think of that new Bentley that a miscounting just cost you. Now, if it was me, I'd have considered staging an impromptu epileptic fit on the green and get my caddy to toss the club in the bushes while all eyes were on me. But then golf is supposed to be honest and all, so I guess Furyk did the right thing. But I wouldn't be surprised if Fluff Cowan's Christmas bonus is a little lighter this year.

If you don't know what is in your bag it would be a good idea to have a look sometime before you start a round . Furyk is not a particularly bright guy but he should be able to count to 14 and then stop ramming more in there for Fluff Ball to lug around for 5+ hours

Limit is 14 and you've got 15 in there? That's not the caddy's fault. He does what you tell him to do.
As for golfers being 'nancies'... let's see YOU hit a drive 300 yards. Doesn't have to be straight, just 300 yards in length. I'll bet you a lot of money right now you can't do it... Nancy.
