Devil Ball Golf - Golf

Every time you tee it up with an unfamiliar foursome, you're going to get some blather about how good your new playing partners are in their chosen professions. Chances are, though, they're not within a mile of the three guys Larry Giebelhausen found hiself with: an NBA immortal, a Super Bowl champion and a top-of-the-charts musician.

Giebelhausen was the latest beneficiary of what's becoming a U.S. Open tradition -- a Golf Digest contest that sets up an everyday dude with three world-famous weekend hackers to play the upcoming U.S. Open course at its championship level. In this case, the foursome included Michael Jordan, Justin Timberlake and Ben Roethlisberger.

Inspired by Tiger Woods' offhand assertion two years ago that a 10-handicap golfer couldn't break 100 at Oakmont, site of the 2007 U.S. Open, the contest asked entrants to come up with a pithy little reason why they deserved to play at such an august location with such a notable group. Giebelhausen's six-word entry: "I'm a cop, I'll shoot low!" won over both Golf Digest's editors and the online voting public. (Giebelhausen is the short one in the photo at right.)

And then it came time to actually play the course. Jordan started off with a triple-bogey on No. 1 and a double-bogey on 2, but settled down -- relatively speaking -- and finished at 16 over par with an 86. Roethlisberger fired an 81, and Timberlake brought sexy back towards par with an 88. Giebelhausen ended up with a 101.

The players weren't the only celebrities on the course; each of the big names had a prominent caddy on the bag. Rocco Mediate carried for Big Ben, Anthony Kim looped for Timberlake, and Fred Couples caddied for Jordan.

Giebelhausen didn't exactly squeal like a little girl in the presence of three celebs, according to the AP. "[Their celebrity] doesn't impress me. What impresses me was that they were nice guys. That they were fun. That they were genuine. That they were pulling for me. That they were supportive."

They were also playing pretty damn well for everyday golfers, so much so that The Golf Blog suggested that perhaps the course was playing too easy. The course ate golfers alive in 2002; perhaps its designers have scaled it back a touch for this year's Open. We shall see ... and we shall also be polishing up our essay-writing skills for next year's contest.

Sure would have been nice to get the current handicaps of that foursome, so I could have some idea what my scoring potential would be on this Bethpage Black setup.

I was reading this blog post thinking how poorly written and stupid it was (examples: Timberlake brought sexy back towards par with an 88; Giebelhausen didn't exactly squeal like a little girl in the presence of three celebs).
But then I looked at the author's name, and I had an "aha moment." Of course--Mr. Hack (hack writer) himself, Jay Busbee, authored this little post. Then it all made sense.

I don't know anything about MJ as a person but speaking strictly about his golf game. It's never been as good as he thought it was.

This has nothing to do with the article but............
A few days ago I bought an old VHS tape of "Jimmy Ballard's golf connection" at a thrift store for
$1. I've heard of Ballard for years but never read or watched any of his material. The guy's a golf
genius! I've gone to the range twice and have hit it better then I have for years. If you get a chance
to watch any of Ballard's stuff make sure you do, you can only get better. I think Ballard is Rocco's
teacher, showed him how to swing without ruining his back....

how much extra practice do you think these guys got in before this event the only guy who was any where near a real 10 handicap was probably the cop who i am sure also practiced alot more than ever before just could not afford a pile of lessons
thye would have all started at a 15 to be a real 10 by the time they played here or they all would have been over 100

I played the Black shortly after the US Open in 2002 and shot an 85. I play the Black quite often since it's only 15 minutes from me. My best is an 81 on the Black (non-Open conditions.) My HC is an 8.7 currently.
If I remember correctly the USGA rating is a 76 and the slope is 148 for the Black to give you an idea.

Just an observation: I was at Bethpage last Monday afternoon, and the course was incredibly green. While the scores posted by the foursome are respectable, I'm positive that the course will be playing MUCH firmer come time for the open (golf fans: have you ever noticed how major championship courses have that brown tinge by Sunday?). In those conditions, even highly skilled golfers have trouble holding the greens from 150yds+.

    Agree with you Sonny!
To all haters, MJ is not a natural golf player for you to expect his greatness as a basketball player! Give him a break!
