Devil Ball Golf - Golf

You gotta love Kenny Perry. He doesn't have a distinctive handle like Rocco Mediate, Boo Weekley, or that fella with the bum knee. He looks like a salesman from Dubuque at the corporate-retreat shotgun start tourney. (He also apparently possesses the ability to make golf balls levitate -- why doesn't anybody ever talk about that?)

However, he's also riding at the top of the golf world right now following a win at Sunday's Buick Open. That makes two tournament wins in June and six top-six finishes for Perry in his last six tourneys. Not bad for a guy within spitting distance of 50, huh? Perry is now ranked third in Ryder Cup standings and second in the FedEx Cup standings, assuming Tiger Woods sticks to his word and doesn't come back until next year.

Here's another interesting fact about Perry. Seems he tried and failed twice to reach Q-school. On his third attempt, a benefactor staked him $5,000, with the stipulation that Perry didn't have to pay him back, just pay 5 percent of his lifetime earnings. It turned out to be a great deal; Perry passed $20 million in career earnings in 2006. The money goes to the benefactor's alma mater, Lipscomb University.

So if all of Perry's competitors for the Fedex Cup end up kneecapped, and Perry takes home the $10 million prize, I'd start looking right here for suspects.

Too bad for ol' Lipscomb U Kenny's not going to play in "The Open". But hey, The Milwaukee (pronounced 'mill-e-wah-que' which is Algonquin for 'the good land,') Open will be happy to have him.

Well played, Kenny P, you got the cool strains of Seattle's Kenny G, the great jazz saxophonist going for you now. I even think your swing had that nice tempo of a syncopated rhythm when I was watching Sundays final nine. But everybody loves a winner, and you earned this one with Woody Austin going full guns right to the very end, and Bubba Watson throwing a left handed hook to the 18th green that would have made Sandy Koufax or the Big Unit proud. Speaking of winners, Mr. Jay Busbee, I think you won your own caption contest with this picture and the question, "why doesn't anybody ever talk about that?". Unless, this article's picture is actually Mr. Perry watching a gopher kicking out his golf ball along with a whole lot of the sand bunker being tossed from his tunnel to the wind.

Chas you are just so poetic, I've been watching Kenny for a while now, This guy is good he will win more tournaments, Bubba Watson he's fun to watch I wish Bubba can control he's shots, just put them on the green and have a chance for birdie, Maybe he''ll be a contender every weekend, We all know he's long hitter. Good luck Bubba hope you get a major title, and for you Mr. K. Perry play the US Open next time, You can do it.

    "I don't know what the hell I was thinkin', maybe I wasn't"
Kenny Perry quoted years later on why he didn't play the two biggest majors during the best run of golf in his life.

Kenny is the reason to watch the PGA at this time and I believe he will take full advantage of this. I don't understand why he's not playing the Majors.

Kenny Perry is a good man. Surprise, surprise----he can flat play some great golf, too. Maybe you could have started with that Yahoo Star Sportswriter.
Kenny Perry has a great shoulder turn---forget what else you're watching. When he takes his time to get back to the ball he's going to beat almost everyone on driving distance, driving accuracy, greens in regulation, and SCORE. He's healthy again and back to the swing that he knows and trusts. Why don't you go take a survey of the players out there on Tour who want to bet on themselves against Kenny on any given day?
When a PGA player plans out his year, he has to make a lot of choices. One of Kenny Perry's goals for 2008 was to return to the scene of an almost-success and play in the Ryder Cup for his country this year-----AND FOR HIS KENTUCKY HOME BOYS. Maybe he's earned a spot on the USA Ryder Cup Team, Mr Cub Reporter, and he did it by planning his golf year in spite of the majors. How many majors have been won by a 47 year old PGA member? If Kenny had played and failed to win the US Open or "the open", would he have made the Ryder Cup team? How many PGA players He forged a great plan and would have been a lock except for a couple of bad putts and an exceptionally bad bounce in Atlanta on the playoff hole. I watched it all that week and he was the absolute best player in the field and he had his swing grooved as good as it gets.
Give the man a little respect. A 10 year old sports fan could have written your article.
What happened to that great "ball striker" Woody Austin on Sunday? His ball striking wasn't good enough to stay with Kenny. What a freaking shock that is this year.
Kenny has done as much as anyone could ever be expected to do under the circumstances, and he's going to be a leader on the Ryder Cup team this year. BOOK IT.
When he runs across david_o_52804 at the side of some road with his cardboard Kenny will probably offer to buy his next meal for him. Hell the moron isn't hung over, Kenny would probably give him a ride on one of the John Deere's on his golf course.

Kenny Perry is and has been one of the class poeple of the PGA Tour for a very long time. The Ryder
Cup in his home state of Kentucky is HIS major. He will be the leader that Tiger and Phil never were.
Kudo's to Kenny for knowing exactly what he wanted and then going out and getting the job done. All of this baloney about why he is not playing The Open Championship and the US Open is exactly that-baloney.....
I am sure those folks in Milwaukee are happy to have Kenny comitt to their tournament, as he has won
there before and seems to always play well in that city.
    Great job Keny.

Perry was ranked 100th the world, and would have had to try to qualify for The Open, when he committed to the John Deere.
Now he is a little embarrassed about it, but will stand by his promise to play there.

There is no doubt that Kenny Perry is great for golf. Outside of his winning PGA ways, the dude owns a golf course and refuses to charge even mid-level green fees. I applaud him for sticking to his plan of forgoing both major Opens this year to chase his Ryder Cup dreams. Just wish he would have left some room in his plan to play in the Open (British) because he coulda been a contenda.

Kenny said that he was going to play here the weekend opposite the British Open because he had committed to the tournament and didn't want to go back on his word. Plus who wants to go play on some of those Brit courses that resemble cow pastures that have been mowed down. He has earned the right to play where he wants so who cares if he passes on the US and Brit Opens? Not me! Good luck Kenny!

Being a fellow Southern Kentuckian, and watching many years of class and integrity, I applaud Kenny Perry's resolve to a commitment and am not surprised in the least at his decision. Kenny has received blessing in his life due to his resolve to family, his giving spirit, and his keen understanding of who he is and what is important. Keep strong Kenny, your class does not go unnoticed.

Kenny -- Some day you'll regret not going to the 2008 British Open. You can win a dozen or more great tournaments but everyone knows that winning one of the 4 majors trumps all the others. You have the best of reasons not to go to the British, but you'll be haunted forever by what might have been. Good luck in the PGA. Charles S.
