You gotta love Kenny Perry. He doesn't have a distinctive handle like Rocco Mediate, Boo Weekley, or that fella with the bum knee. He looks like a salesman from Dubuque at the corporate-retreat shotgun start tourney. (He also apparently possesses the ability to make golf balls levitate -- why doesn't anybody ever talk about that?)
However, he's also riding at the top of the golf world right now following a win at Sunday's Buick Open. That makes two tournament wins in June and six top-six finishes for Perry in his last six tourneys. Not bad for a guy within spitting distance of 50, huh? Perry is now ranked third in Ryder Cup standings and second in the FedEx Cup standings, assuming Tiger Woods sticks to his word and doesn't come back until next year.
Here's another interesting fact about Perry. Seems he tried and failed twice to reach Q-school. On his third attempt, a benefactor staked him $5,000, with the stipulation that Perry didn't have to pay him back, just pay 5 percent of his lifetime earnings. It turned out to be a great deal; Perry passed $20 million in career earnings in 2006. The money goes to the benefactor's alma mater, Lipscomb University.
So if all of Perry's competitors for the Fedex Cup end up kneecapped, and Perry takes home the $10 million prize, I'd start looking right here for suspects.

Kenny Perry quoted years later on why he didn't play the two biggest majors during the best run of golf in his life.

Kenny Perry has a great shoulder turn---forget what else you're watching. When he takes his time to get back to the ball he's going to beat almost everyone on driving distance, driving accuracy, greens in regulation, and SCORE. He's healthy again and back to the swing that he knows and trusts. Why don't you go take a survey of the players out there on Tour who want to bet on themselves against Kenny on any given day?
When a PGA player plans out his year, he has to make a lot of choices. One of Kenny Perry's goals for 2008 was to return to the scene of an almost-success and play in the Ryder Cup for his country this year-----AND FOR HIS KENTUCKY HOME BOYS. Maybe he's earned a spot on the USA Ryder Cup Team, Mr Cub Reporter, and he did it by planning his golf year in spite of the majors. How many majors have been won by a 47 year old PGA member? If Kenny had played and failed to win the US Open or "the open", would he have made the Ryder Cup team? How many PGA players He forged a great plan and would have been a lock except for a couple of bad putts and an exceptionally bad bounce in Atlanta on the playoff hole. I watched it all that week and he was the absolute best player in the field and he had his swing grooved as good as it gets.
Give the man a little respect. A 10 year old sports fan could have written your article.
What happened to that great "ball striker" Woody Austin on Sunday? His ball striking wasn't good enough to stay with Kenny. What a freaking shock that is this year.
Kenny has done as much as anyone could ever be expected to do under the circumstances, and he's going to be a leader on the Ryder Cup team this year. BOOK IT.
When he runs across david_o_52804 at the side of some road with his cardboard Kenny will probably offer to buy his next meal for him. Hell the moron isn't hung over, Kenny would probably give him a ride on one of the John Deere's on his golf course.

Cup in his home state of Kentucky is HIS major. He will be the leader that Tiger and Phil never were.
Kudo's to Kenny for knowing exactly what he wanted and then going out and getting the job done. All of this baloney about why he is not playing The Open Championship and the US Open is exactly that-baloney.....
I am sure those folks in Milwaukee are happy to have Kenny comitt to their tournament, as he has won
there before and seems to always play well in that city.
Great job Keny.

Now he is a little embarrassed about it, but will stand by his promise to play there.
