Normally, when old guys complain about The Way Things Are Today, I tend to tune out and wait for gramps to move on to complaining about the drafty weather or drift off for a nap or whatever. But when the old guy in question is Jack Nicklaus, well, it's probably a good idea to pay attention. (That's him at right, warming up for his start tonight against the Angels. Seems a rather risky play for such a critical playoff game, but whatever ... )
Anyway, Nicklaus had some choice words to the LA Times about the FedEx Cup playoffs, and I don't think these were the ramblings of a senile madman who can't remember where he put his keys:
"Did they play that this year?" Nicklaus told The Times.
"I didn't watch a second of it. Two years in a row, it was basically over before the Tour Championship was even played, and that doesn't make sense."
Nicklaus also uses the great expression "give a rat," as in "the players don't give a rat about FedEx points," which is perfectly innocent, filthy, and confusing all at the same time.
Look, we don't need to belabor the point; the FedEx Cup is FedexCup'ed up. But rantings of fans and golf blogs is one thing; when Nicklaus steps in, let's hope that lights a fire under the appropriate tails.

He used to be MY MAN. Now, a sad, but filthy rich old man.

For the rest of us, we will just keep playing at our local courses for bragging rights and $20 bucks!

Jack has always acted like a professional both in front of the camera and behind. You never saw Jack curse on camera, or shove a fan out of his way after he hit a bad shot (reference Tiger shoving a small child to the ground a few years back after hitting a shot into the drink on a par 3, Bay Hill or perhaps Doral, unsure which at the moment).
Jack is and has always been an ambassador to golf. When queried about his sub-standard record in Ryder Cup competition, Tiger made the comment about "how many majors did jack win, and when the answer of 18 was quickly given, he threw out "what was Jacks record in the Ryder Cup". The reporters couldn't answer and sat back in shock (either because they didn't know, or were to shocked to reply " It DOES matter what your record is!".
Jacks record in Ryder Cup play is an impressive 17-8-5, BUT Tiger doesn't get the whole Team thing - he thinks that 18 majors is the only record that matters - and it doesn't. What matters is how you conduct yourself, how you will be remembered, and how the fans respect you.
In my eye, when I consider the 10 greatest golfers in the world, I think of Jack, Ben, Byron, Gene, Bobbie, Arnie, Gary, Willie Parks, Tom Watson and Old Tom Morris. Tiger doesn't even merit mention in my top 50 because of his poor attitude, his terrible demeanor on the course when things don't go his way, and because he is a self-centered jerk.
Yes, I admire Tiger the player for his skill, but Tiger the person needs serious work.

Tiger has built his charity/foundation in to one of the most effective on the planet, yet he's self-centered? Classic.

very agreable with the fed ex cup concept.( i enjoyed the competion among the
golphers very much) as for the prize (money) it would nice if it would be divided
differently----$3,000,000.00 for the winner with most fed ex points and $7,000,000.00
towards a very good cause for very needy children in the winners name mary adams

know the game. They had that debate between Jack and Tiger on who would hit the further with the same
equipment results as follows: Driver Jack would win that one, long irons Jack again would win, middle to
to short Tiger who has the better short game. They determinded that they were equal with the putters.
Jack was hitting drives well over 300 yards with a persimmon Driver. Come guys both great players.
If it had not been for Jack ,Arnie, Gary nobody would playing for what they are playing for now.

I believe that point system should be used to determine who gets into the first tournament only. After that, you continue on as you finish. No other major sport champion wins just by showing up... so, why should golf's champion win by showing up and shooting 9 over? Ridiculous!!!!!!
