Devil Ball Golf - Golf

Normally, when old guys complain about The Way Things Are Today, I tend to tune out and wait for gramps to move on to complaining about the drafty weather or drift off for a nap or whatever. But when the old guy in question is Jack Nicklaus, well, it's probably a good idea to pay attention. (That's him at right, warming up for his start tonight against the Angels. Seems a rather risky play for such a critical playoff game, but whatever ... )

Anyway, Nicklaus had some choice words to the LA Times about the FedEx Cup playoffs, and I don't think these were the ramblings of a senile madman who can't remember where he put his keys:

"Did they play that this year?" Nicklaus told The Times.

"I didn't watch a second of it. Two years in a row, it was basically over before the Tour Championship was even played, and that doesn't make sense."

Nicklaus also uses the great expression "give a rat," as in "the players don't give a rat about FedEx points," which is perfectly innocent, filthy, and confusing all at the same time.

Look, we don't need to belabor the point; the FedEx Cup is FedexCup'ed up. But rantings of fans and golf blogs is one thing; when Nicklaus steps in, let's hope that lights a fire under the appropriate tails.

Did anyone watch? And why do these multi millionaires need such a senseless tournament to fatten their pocketbooks? Fed Ex, or whoever, should donate all that money to a worthy charity! And Vijay ain't one of 'em!!

No matter how many commercials they shoot trying to convince us that it's important, that it means something, that it's more than just a four-week-long advertisement, nobody -- not the players, not the fans, not even the announcers who have to put on their serious voice and pretend it's not a farce -- is buying it. Nobody's going to buy it. The players will smile and take the $10 million, but nobody cares. Rich Tosches sucks.

Jack is a bitter OLD golfer. Equipment is too good. Balls go too far. Competition is not as good. I'm the greatest golfer, not Tiger. My records should stand anyone.
He used to be MY MAN. Now, a sad, but filthy rich old man.

While the Fed ex playoffs were not that exciting this year, I think it was even worse last year when Tiger had it wrapped up at mid season. If they intend to build drama with this thing, they absolutely need to change it.
How about if they uh, they could uh, if they just uh, well lets face it, its only going to be exciting to the guys that are actually playing for all those millions!
For the rest of us, we will just keep playing at our local courses for bragging rights and $20 bucks!

I agree with Jack, whoever had the final say on the Fed X Cup format was probably looking for a safe and natural way to cure insomnia, well it worked! I now can sleep through the day and night.

When the Fed Ex cup was first presented...........and the purse of $10 milion for the winner was revealed..........it was doomed to failure. Nobody cared once it sank in that these guys need another $10 million like they need a hole in their heads.

I'm glad that Jack is speaking his mind because none of the current players will. This FedEx Cup concept was a mistake from the beginning. I understand the need to shorten the season (how many people will watch golf once football starts), but to try and create excitement in such a disjointed manner was and is a joke.

Jack has always been a true gentleman. He said from the beginning that he thought Tiger would break his record and has always been very gracious about Tiger's talent. It's hard to argue that the equipment hasn't changed the way the game is played. And, what is the purpose of the FedEx cup? Candor has a place in sports. One of the lessons of golf is integrity and Jack has always been a great role model and has worn the mantle of leadership in the game. Give him his due. He honors the game just as I believe that Tiger continues to carry this legacy.

Jack is well known because of Tiger? Please get your facts straight.
Jack has always acted like a professional both in front of the camera and behind. You never saw Jack curse on camera, or shove a fan out of his way after he hit a bad shot (reference Tiger shoving a small child to the ground a few years back after hitting a shot into the drink on a par 3, Bay Hill or perhaps Doral, unsure which at the moment).
Jack is and has always been an ambassador to golf. When queried about his sub-standard record in Ryder Cup competition, Tiger made the comment about "how many majors did jack win, and when the answer of 18 was quickly given, he threw out "what was Jacks record in the Ryder Cup". The reporters couldn't answer and sat back in shock (either because they didn't know, or were to shocked to reply " It DOES matter what your record is!".
Jacks record in Ryder Cup play is an impressive 17-8-5, BUT Tiger doesn't get the whole Team thing - he thinks that 18 majors is the only record that matters - and it doesn't. What matters is how you conduct yourself, how you will be remembered, and how the fans respect you.
In my eye, when I consider the 10 greatest golfers in the world, I think of Jack, Ben, Byron, Gene, Bobbie, Arnie, Gary, Willie Parks, Tom Watson and Old Tom Morris. Tiger doesn't even merit mention in my top 50 because of his poor attitude, his terrible demeanor on the course when things don't go his way, and because he is a self-centered jerk.
Yes, I admire Tiger the player for his skill, but Tiger the person needs serious work.

I don't think the fedex cup is the big problem...I think someone else nailed it in that it's the constant, over the top marketing by the PGA that rubs people the wrong way. Of course Jack didn't watch...Tiger wasn't in it, college/pro football is cranking up, and we'd all JUST enjoyed a great Ryder Cup win. Last year, however, the Boston tournament was good stuff, as was Tiger's win in Atlanta. I still see the format as a winner for all...consistent, great play is financially rewarded, "post-majors" tournies get some pub and relevance, attendance can grow, advertisers can spend money, and we can watch some solid golf on good courses, while the sport clings to the last meaningful coverage it will enjoy before March.
Tiger has built his charity/foundation in to one of the most effective on the planet, yet he's self-centered? Classic.

I grew up watching Jack Nicklaus play golf along with equally great golfers like Lee Trevino, Tom Watson, Gary Player and Seve Ballesteros. I am fortunate to be still alive to watch Tiger Woods play this great game. In my humble opinion I do not believe Jack has any jealousy or resentment against Tiger for the latter's success today. And I agree with Jack that somehow the system in the FedEx cup does not make sense. Also I don't remember Jack losing his temper and throwing or slamming his clubs when he hit bad shots but have seen Tiger doing it more than once. Maybe Tiger will not do it anymore as he matures more and has to be a role model now that he will be a father to more than one child.

OMG Jack wearing the Red Sucks uniform??? You SUCK! Sorry Jack, Tiger is better. Even if he doesnt break ur 18 major records. As far as new equipment and new balls...Tiger can still hit further than Jack using persimmon wood. They have said it. Still both great players. Now about the Fed -Ex Crap? Stopped watching golf after the US Open. What a waste of $10Million...give me some of that money to "Bailout" my debts. Pretty soon we are going to "BAILOUT" Fed-Ex in the near future.

Wow---$10,000,000.00!!!!the comments from most of the 20 people above me seem not to be
very agreable with the fed ex cup concept.( i enjoyed the competion among the
golphers very much) as for the prize (money) it would nice if it would be divided
differently----$3,000,000.00 for the winner with most fed ex points and $7,000,000.00
towards a very good cause for very needy children in the winners name mary adams

The conclusion that I come to is this. The purpose of the FedEx Cup is only to endorse FedEx. I believe they don't care about a format. They spend the money and they get their name splashed around for the entire year. That is the only purpose. They might as well call it the FedEx Tour. I am not sure what sport has ever asked how the fans would like the professionals perform. Just a thought.

To Joel and the couple of others that made dump un-educated remarks. It is apparent that all of you don't
know the game. They had that debate between Jack and Tiger on who would hit the further with the same
equipment results as follows: Driver Jack would win that one, long irons Jack again would win, middle to
to short Tiger who has the better short game. They determinded that they were equal with the putters.
Jack was hitting drives well over 300 yards with a persimmon Driver. Come guys both great players.
If it had not been for Jack ,Arnie, Gary nobody would playing for what they are playing for now.

Jack may be a "cranky old dude", but the Fed Ex Cup is pointless in it's current format.
I believe that point system should be used to determine who gets into the first tournament only. After that, you continue on as you finish. No other major sport champion wins just by showing up... so, why should golf's champion win by showing up and shooting 9 over? Ridiculous!!!!!!
