Golf for diehards

The firestorm began more than two weeks ago, set off by a controversial comment about Tiger Woods from a TV announcer on the Golf Channel. On Friday, the flames kept roaring across the land as blacks from all parts of America stood as one and asked: "There's a golf channel?"

Yes, there is, and hundreds of thousands of devoted Golf Channel viewers plop down on their sofas to watch the non-stop programming. Such a following – 24 hours a day, seven days a week – indicates the sport has surged to new levels of popularity and, more importantly, that the nation's unemployment problem might be a just tad bigger than we've been lead to believe.

The Golf Channel launched in 1995 and is, according to the network, available in more than 90 million homes worldwide. And, as we all know, nothing keeps a family glued to the TV in the Thaba-Tseka, Lesotho, quite like watching the John Deere Classic.

But the Golf Channel is more than just a late-night rerun of the entire second round of the Buick Open. It's also packed with informative programming such as "Playing Lessons From the Pros," in which stars such as Tiger himself offer useful tips for the typical weekend player, such as when facing a 230-yard shot to the green into a howling Pebble Beach wind, do you hit a full pitching wedge or punch a little 9-iron.

Another actual program is called "What's In the Bag?" which is, as I understand it, a comprehensive look into just what the heck John Daly could possibly be eating for lunch.

But then, on Jan. 4, during the Golf Channel's important telecast of, well, something or other, announcer Kelly Tilghman suggested the best way other golfers could slow down Woods would involve a back-alley lynching.

Tilghman apologized and Tiger apparently said via a spokesman that the comment was no big deal and people should let it go. People did not let it go, of course, and announcer Tilghman was suspended. (Thus giving another announcer at the the Golf Channel the opportunity during last Thursday's opening round of the Bob Hope to utter those history-making words when Nick Flanagan struck a 6-foot putt: "Ohhh, that'll be
short!")

Then, this week, another bombshell in the Tiger/lynching controversy: A magazine called Golfweek (motto: "Fore: The number of interesting stories we've run in the past two years") ran a cover photo of a hangman's noose. So the magazine fired its editor.

And all of this could have been avoided if on that fateful day Tilghman had just offered up the more traditional, tried-and-true method of slowing down an opponent on the golf course.

Although in this politically correct world, there'd probably be someone outraged at the mere suggestion of sneaking up behind the great Tiger Woods and, just as he starts his swing, sticking a golf club between his legs and shouting "Gotcha!"

its not about political correctness stupid, i am a ivy league educated black man and i think it was very irresponsible to have a hangmans noose on the cover of a magazine.
duh, is it possible that a kid could have picked up his old mans magazine and saw that?, as popular as tiger woods is i think it was very irresponsible and he should have been fired, kelly on the other hand should not have been suspended because if she said the same thing about phil or sergio know one would have had a problem but the noose goes waaaaaaaaaaaay to far.

my foursome missed the tilghman comment. from what we have read, it sounds like pc run amuk again. we no longer watch the gc due to the inordinate amount of commercials. they are either selling time for 10 dollars a pop or are just plain greedy.

i think people should stop being offended for other races
if one of the three black people that acctually watches the glof network gets offened, so be it. but we need to learn to stop worrying about what other people fell like when they watch tv
and btw; who "accidentally" suggests a lynching when mentioning a black athlete?
congrats rich on telling it like it is

The only people that were lynched were Tilghman and Seanor. It doesn't take a genius to figure out the context of Tilghman's comment and Tiger wasn't offended so why was anyone else? Seanor, as I understand was referring to Tilghman's high tech lynching and the noose on the cover was meant to emphasize that. When we refuse to let the race hustlers dominate our thinking we will be better off. But the PC crowd never misses a chance to throw race into the mix anytime they can. I am sure that race wasn't the intent of either Kelly or Dave. BTW, I don't really care for Kelly as a golf anchor because her appearance shows female and her voice says male.

All of us need to "stay tuned" to The Golf Channel and Golfweek to see what they can do next to "top"
their stupid moves of the year achievement. I have got to believe that each organization is holding daily staff meetings to try and come up with new ideas to top these two crowing achievements in media stupidity.

PC is ruining our society. I guess a roll of toilet paper on the cover would make people shudder to.
I would like to know what troy w thinks of Al "Slim Shady" Sharpton? He couldn't carry MLK Jr's golf bag.

I think Tiger should have step up for Tilghman's because he wasn't offended by her remarks. He should have gone to the company and support her, could have told the company that if they fire her he will never give interviews. That´s the way you support somebody.

There is political correctness and then there is common sense. Making a comment about lynching a prominent black athlete, and then showing a noose on the cover of a magazine in connection with the story, is like "jokingly" making a Hitler salute outside a synagogue.

Politics-Politicly correct...should be grouped with four letter words...Freedom of speech...where? Thanks Tiger for having a sense of humor and not taking all too personal...I think the statement should be considered a compliment...apparently too many people have guilty conscience...or are just unhappy with the choices they have made of which have brought their lives to disaster...gotta have someone to blame it on

Get over it .!!! The intent was to the editor and company, not a particular enthic group .
You can't make a comment without it being taken out of context. Many ethnic groups have had unfortunate hangings. Look at Saddam Hussein and Johnny Depp in the first Pirates of the Carribean movie.

When we trade 'political correctness' for free speech, we are compromising the liberties and freedoms that once made America great. Anyone condoning censorship is deserving of neither the right to speak their opinion nor the freedom of democracy.

Journalism is getting way out of hand and so is the mouth agenda from lips that have negative feed to the public. We are the ones digesting their rotten attitudes and expected to listen to it. We can turn the channel per se, but it would just be something else that is toxic to the ears. PEOPLE of the planet..........GET IT TOGETHER !!!!!!!!! Promote do not Provoke. Tiger is the only reason this white girl watches golf. Raphael is the only reason this white girl watches tennis. What does that say???????

It goes to show that racism is still in the hearts of some white americans. For her to utter that was totally insensative, and showed what was in her subconceous. If tiger woods was jewish and someone said, " we have to stop him by putting him in a furnace" there would have been a major out cry, and that reporter would have been banished. Also, if they would have put a furnace on the cover of the magazine there would have been major problems too. Racism is a disease and it is still here and alive. When people make comments and do things like that, they are partakers in their fore fathers brutal american history.

There was nothing wrong with the cover. Take the comment that Tilghmann made however you want to. The cover was in response to her comment and the position the gc was in. He should not have been fired. As far as a kid seeing the cover.....that is the dumbest response I've heard.

    Rich,
Interesting that you mention MLK Jr. and Al Sharpton - How about you step up to the plate, to fight the imbalance of justice in the U S of A. Let's see what you bring to the table, but sitting behind a keyboard.
Unless you have ever walked in a "minorities' shoes" and have any ideal of what racism feels like, your comment lacks any type of substance.
Truly amazes me that MLK Jr., Kennedy and Malcolm X were assassinated....the very ones that tried to
stop what we have now, 40 years ago. But yet the you sit on your pedestal, as if you have any clue how it feels.
By the way, what have you contributed to mankind lately? Please, don't tell me, " I have black friends and I'm not racist! "

From what I understand, Kelly and Tiger are friends. Tiger didn't have a problem with it. Why should we? Get over it.... The noose on the cover on the magazine was in poor taste, however.

why does lynching and a black man automatically equal racism??? PC is over rated people are too soft its not like tilghman goes to klan meetings to teach golf. Maybe he went too far but i dont think he should lose his job.

So it's a freakin' noose, so what! Who cares??
Those who've been taught the lies of the past about the lynching of blacks...well how about the lynching of innocent whites? That for some reason is just never discussed. Why? Because it doesn't fit the PC crowds political agenda.
    Stupidity gone amok!!
