Devil Ball Golf - Golf

This, friends, is the downside of the celebrity-driven culture that brings millions of fans to golf in Tiger's wake.

Geoff Ogilvy won the Accenture Match Play Championship on Sunday, and -- yes, Ogilvy. Geoff ... he's a good player ... yes, I know you haven't heard of him ... No, Tiger didn't win ... Thursday ... yes, they do play tournaments even when Tiger isn't in them ...

Sorry, friends. Was just breaking the Ogilvy news to pretty much everybody in America. Because it's pretty damn certain that none of them were watching on Sunday.

What they missed was an absolute clinic, a feat of showmanship in which Ogilvy, who's fast becoming one of the best players of our time, absolutely decimated Paul Casey, who'd been one of the best match players of recent times.

Problem is, neither Ogilvy nor Casey do anything to excite anyone beyond the golf base. They're effective, relentless, phenomenally talented -- and these days, that's not nearly enough to break big. Which is too bad -- but it's the way it is. Even one of the most competitive formats of the year -- match play -- isn't enough to reverse the order of celebrity first, talent second.

So if you tuned in on Sunday, you saw some of the most skilled golf of the year. And you were one of the very few.

This is a great performance by Oglivy !! Seven competitive rounds of golf in five days, four in the last two. He becomes a two time winner of this event & a three time winner of Word Cup events. Only Tiger has won more !
But --Hey what about Lorena ?? Playing the final round head to head with Paula Creamer who held a 3 shot lead she put up a 6 under against Ms. Creamer"s 2 over to win easily. This all happened in Thailand & of course who cares about how women play golf but pound for pound she is easily the best golfer in the World , a great person and an all-around athlete

Well, I like Geoff Ogilvy. Why is that eveeryone can beat Phil about the head for losing the U.S open in-what 06?) and can't.. remember who beat him--Geoff. He's one of our better players or rather the PGA's. I don't think the match play is very interesting when it gets down to two, unless they are Tiger or Phil. Phil would have made that putt on 17 on Friday if he had not fiddled around with Bones and just shot.

Stick to the other sport with the stick mate....hockey. It is certain you do not understand golf. One does not make a nation. It was a great match if one understands the game.......which has been around, and will be around, much longer than hack writers. Talk about boring....let's look at your attempt at reporting. Snore..........

Ogilvy has great game! He played excellent golf. If you have a rough time watching match play, turn it off. Golf without Tiger still has many great stories.

Hey, if golf's not your game than so be it. But for those of us who understand the stamina required to play that many rounds going head to head, the WGC is an excellent tournament to watch. Sorry Tiger wasn't in the final, but that's the beauty of the format. You have to have game every day and Olgilvy had it, bare none. There's a lot to be learned by watching the matches and listening to the commentary. I, for one, am ready to watch both the Cup finals and Masters.Game on.

If America didn't watch it because Tiger wasn't playing then America missed some pretty good golf.

Well even the Tiger Sack-Hangers could've got their rocks off this weekend. Jimmy Roberts did a whole 10 min monologue about him and the longest NBC(ahem Johnny Miller or Gary Koch) went without mentioning Tigger's name was a whopping 4 min and 26 sec.

JB thanks looser chargers, said you are like me, that's nice I like that, Yes Ogilvy is precisely skillfull, Tiger is good that he lose, early to spend more time with his family, rather than wishing to win, And Ogilvy will just kick the daylight out of him. well that's funny!! LOL
Charger go clean Tigers toilet will you.

Sorry, was I too subtle for some of you? I think it sucks that Ogilvy's great performance is being ignored. But that's the world we live in now, where Tiger highlights take precedence over live action. I'm not happy about it, but that's the way it is now.

and we're whining about Tiger again because.......????
The writer of this article is part of the problem he is complaining about....
but the reality is, there is no problem. Professional sport is entertainment, which is many-faceted. It's not just about skill, it's not just about personality. So what if some people missed watching some great golf.....perhaps they were actually out PLAYING golf.....which is more important??

#24 autogras? What kind of grass is that ? You smoke it ?
I personally do not ask anyone for an AUTOGRAPH they have enough to do without being bothered with a pen and paper/or whatever pushed in their face. An AUTOGRAPH will not even buy a cup of coffee. That is how I see it, not because you are always running down a great person and greater golfer.
