This, friends, is the downside of the celebrity-driven culture that brings millions of fans to golf in Tiger's wake.
Geoff Ogilvy won the Accenture Match Play Championship on Sunday, and -- yes, Ogilvy. Geoff ... he's a good player ... yes, I know you haven't heard of him ... No, Tiger didn't win ... Thursday ... yes, they do play tournaments even when Tiger isn't in them ...
Sorry, friends. Was just breaking the Ogilvy news to pretty much everybody in America. Because it's pretty damn certain that none of them were watching on Sunday.
What they missed was an absolute clinic, a feat of showmanship in which Ogilvy, who's fast becoming one of the best players of our time, absolutely decimated Paul Casey, who'd been one of the best match players of recent times.
Problem is, neither Ogilvy nor Casey do anything to excite anyone beyond the golf base. They're effective, relentless, phenomenally talented -- and these days, that's not nearly enough to break big. Which is too bad -- but it's the way it is. Even one of the most competitive formats of the year -- match play -- isn't enough to reverse the order of celebrity first, talent second.
So if you tuned in on Sunday, you saw some of the most skilled golf of the year. And you were one of the very few.

But --Hey what about Lorena ?? Playing the final round head to head with Paula Creamer who held a 3 shot lead she put up a 6 under against Ms. Creamer"s 2 over to win easily. This all happened in Thailand & of course who cares about how women play golf but pound for pound she is easily the best golfer in the World , a great person and an all-around athlete

The writer of this article is part of the problem he is complaining about....
but the reality is, there is no problem. Professional sport is entertainment, which is many-faceted. It's not just about skill, it's not just about personality. So what if some people missed watching some great golf.....perhaps they were actually out PLAYING golf.....which is more important??

I personally do not ask anyone for an AUTOGRAPH they have enough to do without being bothered with a pen and paper/or whatever pushed in their face. An AUTOGRAPH will not even buy a cup of coffee. That is how I see it, not because you are always running down a great person and greater golfer.
