Sometimes there are just relationships that make total sense. John Stockton and Karl Malone, Will Ferrel and "Elf," and now, Dustin Johnson and Joe LaCava? Who?!
LaCava is the two-decade long caddie for Fred Couples, and was on the bag during his 1992 Masters win, but caddies are very much like rich millionaires, always moving on to something younger and hotter. That would be Dustin Johnson, who plans to have LaCava on the bag at the Players Championship after splitting ties with Bobby Brown after three years together, and to me, it looks like a match made in green jacket heaven.
Why? Because LaCava worked with Fred Couples, the archetype for Johnson years before, someone with that chill demeanor that never seems to get rattled and definitely enjoys life on and off the golf course. Also, LaCava is the type of looper that works to get his player focused when he can see it fading, which probably is a good thing for someone as laid back as Johnson.
It seemed after the PGA Championship, the Brown-Johnson relationship could go south if the success didn't continue, just because that is such a major error to screw up, that something has to happen (similar to someone leaking news of who is getting kicked off "American Idol," and the producers having to fire someone just to clear the air for everyone else).
Hopefully this turns into a permanent gig for LaCava, because he could really help Johnson, and hopefully return him to the way he was playing back in 2010, when he won twice and was in the hunt at two other majors. Brown and Johnson had success, much like Tiger Woods and Fluff did at the start of Woods' career, but it seemed when Tiger linked up with Steve Williams, a serious relationship was born, and that could be the same with Dustin and Joe.
