Devil Ball Golf - Golf

We don't go out of our way to find stories that make John Daly look bad. Really, I swear. They just kind of drop in our laps, like this newest one: in Australia on Thursday, Daly didn't exactly take kindly to being photographed. Daly, finishing out an ugly 6-over 78 at the Australian Open that likely took him out of cut contention, grabbed the guy's camera and smashed it into a tree.

Now, this is very much a he-snapped/he-snapped situation; it's easy to see Daly's side of things here. You play like garbage, the last thing you want to deal with is some Aussie paparazzi-wannabe shoving his little digital camera in your face. "I was looking to take a drop and a camera was 6 inches away from my face," Daly said in a statement after the round. "If I was 10 under, I would have felt the same," Daly said. "My eyes are still burning from the flash of the camera ... I feel it was very rude to put a camera that close to somebody’s face in any situation. The guy that had the camera had already taken a dozen shots at close range."

Down Under and Daly don't exactly get along. In 2002, he threw his putter and ball into a greenside lake after finishing out a seven-over final round at the Australian PGA, then stormed off without signing his card. He was fined $5,600 -- in Daly terms, about 980 Hooters' Stacked Wing platters -- and ordered to apologize to a whole buncha folks.

To a great extent, Daly's a victim of his chosen profession. An NBA player who smashed a camera against a wall wouldn't rate a mention in the first 30 minutes of SportsCenter. Shoot, in the last week alone the NFL has seen self-inflicted gunshot wounds and full frontal nudity; a simple camera-smash would probably get a thank-you note from the commissioner's office.

But Daly plays golf, where a club angrily returned to a bag is a cause for a reprimand. So it's bad luck for him. That, and the fact that he has a bit of trouble with, you know, basic sports self-control.

The only upside to all this is that we're probably about one season away from Daly doing a full-on bodyslam of some smarmy golfer. It's gonna happen, you know it.

Cameras are not allowed, end of story. If Tiger's caddie had done this, he may already have at some point, everyone would be laughing. Daly was in the right.

As much as I thought John was good for the game, now he is just showing signs of depression, aggression, and just pure shiftlessness. He needs help. I think the golf world should show him the door and get him some help. Or I fear he won't be with us long. The warning signs are loud and clear, but we are too busy just watching his antics. He is the Dennis Rodman of Golf. He is the Mike Tyson of Golf. Neither of these are good titles but both fit like gloves. Good luck John, want you back man.

The real question is, would he have smashed a nice cold pint of ale if it were 6 inches from his face.

John Daly is the victim here. Taking a photograph 6 inches from your face is very rude. Reporters are just blowing this incident way out of proportion. What a shame.

PGA events in the states don't allow cameras or cell phones in the premises, and have not for years. How was this guy even let in the tournament with a camera?

He also in the past had a torn stomach muscle that he blames on a Photog, so he really doesn't like jerks with cameras. Clegg seems like he wanted to push it and got lucky he didn't get smashed into the tree!

Daly is the man. He was probably drunk, which he should be to play that type of slow game, makes things seem a little easier. But John Daly brings a much-needed attitude toward the softy sport, a fiery guy with a fiery attitude. I love the man and this just proves his greatness.
I guess the Australian booze wasn't up to his par.......

The dude was golfing for crying out loud. Get the camera away from his face. I would have done the same thing. Your already mad because your playing lousy and now you have to deal with some moron snapping flash shots in your face. He should have thrown the photographer into the tree.

He was not in the right here Golf is a game of etiquette. He should of had security remove the fan instead of throwing a fit and smashing the poor dudes camera. Just because you are a professional doesn't mean you can get away with this kind of crap it is vandalism! John get your anger under control! take some anger managment classes!

If the photog argues, there is a simple rule:
If you are holding the camera close enough for a broken down drunk to grab it, you are holding it too close.

I agree, a camera 6 inches from your face while you're trying to perform crazy. What ever happened to zoom lenses? Oh wait, the photographer was too cheap to get a real camera ................
