Devil Ball Golf - Golf

It's a sad truth of human endeavor that we prize celebrity over achievement. Anonymous charity workers get no press and no love while celebri-dingbats get worship. It's the rare moment when a celebrity crosses over into actually achieving something, which sort of sets the whole paradigm on its head.

Which is where we are now with Michelle Wie. As has been discussed ad infinitum in recent hours, she's finally capitalized on all the promise she's shown since she was a little kid. And while she's basking in the glory of her achievement, we can ask: what does it all mean? More specifically, what does it mean for the LPGA?

Wie's win came at the best possible time for the beleaguered tour. With a brand-new commissioner and fluctuating-to-declining public interest, the LPGA needed another anonymous tournament winner about as much as it needed a child-slavery scandal. Instead, it got Michelle Wie, the marquee player on Tour -- she's the LPGA player even your grandmother may know -- and all of a sudden, the LPGA gets invigorated.

Or does it? That's the question. Will Wie's win help the LPGA? With the stigma of failure washed away, will she start to draw in new fans and bring back old ones? Or is women's golf drawing from a limited pool, the way the WNBA does?

Me, I'm for anything that will bring in more golf fans, so I'm happy to see Wie succeed and I'm just fine with her getting more hype than anybody else on Tour. A few more wins would be nice, but let's not get greedy just yet.

So, your turn: does Michelle Wie's win pique your interest in women's golf? If not, is there anything that would? Have your say, friends.

Yes this is very good for the LPGA. Michelle will win again in 2010. Golf wins more fans this year with the 2012 Olympics.

Her win is good for LPGA, but MW needs to be dominant like that one player in PGA is doing to really help LPGA. She has the talent, let's see if she truly develops the mental edge to be the player to beat. It's only one win, but it's a start and she's still only 20 so it is possible.

With her consistent play since Solheim Cup, she will be the force to be reckoned with. I bet she will win at least a couple tournaments in 2010 if she will play more tournaments. I believe in her. Go Michelle!

My LPGA interest began when Michelle entered and held her own in the LPGA tourneys she was permitted to enter. Her ability to compete at the LPGA level consistently served notice to all she was for real. From her preteen years onward she found competition and excelled among the boys her age and older here in Hawaii. She will not FADE away; she will lead the LPGA to greater heights as did Tiger Woods in the PGA. As she does the LPGA women will receive their
due in interest, growth, sponsorships equivalent to that the PGA members enjoy and the
compensation they truly deserve and will earn. This latter is a disgrace today! Go Michelle!

As an avid golfer a big fan, I still have a very hard time watching the LPGA. They were right in my backyard for the Open this year (Saucon) and I didn't go. Wie's win is great for the game, but still isn't going to get me to watch. Quite frankly, I don't know what will.

YES!!! Michelle WILL win again soon. Maybe this year. She still has one more tournament to play this year. She is
what the LPGA needs right now. You Nay sayers seem to forget that she was a teenager until last month. Simple
mistakes cost her 2 tournaments this year. Compairing Michelle to Natalle is unfair. Natalle has a lot more
interest in other things besides golf. I see a comparison between Michelle and Tiger and IF she puts in the work,
she win a lot more tournaments. Will she put in the work? You can bet on it. Remember, she joined the PGA in
hopes of one day playing and winning the Masters. Someone with that kind of ambition WILL put in the work
    needed to be a winner.

I'm really happy for Michelle and I'm ecstatic that she finally won. But, ultimately, I don't see this having a big impact on the LPGA long term. Until the LPGA can garner the sponsors and the money that the PGA does, it will always play second fiddle. Sadly, this seems to be the norm in all of women's sports. I'm not trying to take anything away from Michelle or the other great LPGA players, but I can't see the Australian government (or any other) shelling out 1.5 milion for one of THEM to come and play a tournament there.

No. Michelle Wie is just another example of what is wrong with the "ME!" generation of athlete. She is nothing more than overhyped marketing tactics and her parents should be shamed for encouraging it.

How long has she been playing professionally?
I think at least 3 years and if I'm right then my answer is no she won't go to the Hall unless she dominates for the next decade.
She has a big hole to climb out of and personally I don't think she can be one of the best ever.
Michelle Wie is a David Duval in the making.

at age 19 - 20 with another 15 years ahead of her professionally, she should be able to dominate as a certain Swede did. She needs to become mentally tough and less reliant on her family, advisors, and sycophants.

Sorry.... I'm not lookin for anyone to sweep the LPGA fan off thier feet. I'm just waiting for USA players to get to the head of the pack. That will stir up the competition and raise the stakes, rivalries, and purse size. MW is nice to watch and I'm glad she won but until the USA ladies start to dominate again, the LPGA will continue to struggle... By the way... It sure doesn't help that the GC still does thier best to keep PCreamer off the camera. She is still the reason I watch the LPGA. GC your not foolin anyone. Most of paula's shots were shown from tape delay so that they can show live MW looking off into space.

Not that i think they don't deserve it, i would like to see more US teen get into golf and make the LPGA more interesting to watch... Thanks to Paula Creamer and Natalie Gulbis for bring the fashion into golf... They look like beautiful models on the golf course runway... Michelle is so beautiful including Leona... Yes to LPGA

Why would you watch the PGA and not the LGPA? Golf is golf and the ladies are as jgood as what they do as the men. If you would only watch you would see them make some Tger-like shots. If you are a true golf fan you can appreicate both.

First of... Congratulations to Michelle. I've been a big fan and finally got that Gorilla off her back. She'll win again in '10. Look at what she's done since joining the LPGA. I think she had 6 or 8 top 10's before winning last weekend. One of the most consistent American player this year which is the reason why she got pick for the Solheim Cup. Her play on the Cup and her peer's acceptance of her rejuvinated her game and her outlook in life that everyone is not against her. She has earned the respect by going thru Q-school and not getting the easy way out or in to the Tournaments. Once she opened up with her peers during the Solheim Cup, she was actually liken by her competitors and became friends with them. It was actually nice to see Pressel and Lincicome to shower her beer to help her celebrate. That is what friends are for...
As for #1, no she's not Natalie. I am also a Gulbis fan but Natalie's game is in disarray due to injuries. The last couple of years she barely made a couple of tournmanets in the top 10. If Michelle's injuries (ankle) heal up before '10, she'll be cracking the top 10 and giving her chances to win. I'll say she'll win 2 next year! Good Luck Michelle and get better soon Natalie!

Congrats to Michelle on her first career win... with more hard work and mental discipline, she has a very good chance of notching a couple more in 2010... but in order for the LPGA to draw new and/or more fans from Michelle winning, She will have to be at the top of the leaderboards on a weekly basis... Wie will also have to win or be in contention of winning majors if the LPGA hopes to sustain any newfound fanbase... ultimately though, a single person cannot save a sport, so it's up to the other golfers of the LPGA to step up their games as well... if Natalie, Michelle, Paula and Morgan were contending or winning on a regular basis, I'm sure that there would be a newfound fanbase here in the states... while there is no doubt that Lorena and the Koreans have dominated the LPGA, the idea of one of these young Americans winning regularly would definitely help and sustain interest...
the idea of a pin-up calender sounds intriguing... nothing scandalous, demeaning or tacky, but enough to create an interest... without a doubt there are some very attractive ladies playing on the LPGA, and while I may be a chauvinist or sexist for even mentioning this, there are countless of other guys who have thought the same thing

Wie, the savior of the LPGA? Hardly, although the press has been waiting 7 years for this!!! Sex appeal and more personalities that cater to the masses (including sponsors) here in the states is what is needed. Sorry, but more hotties with personalities that can golf are what is needed, (Hurry-up Rawson! Win another for us Paula?, Where or where is Natalie?) Albeit, I clearly understand how politically incorrect my previous statement is; god forbid we even state the truth. This female Asian dominated tour (approx., 35% Asian) is exciting as eating sushi at a BBQ pit in Texas. The reasons are obvious as to why the LPGA has little luster and personality; all you have to look at the lower TV ratings, quality of advertisers, and the significant drop in tour stops. Viewership is up when you have the Americans in the mix; otherwise its obvious people aren't interested in watching a Korean dominated tour; let alone names and personalities that are exciting as watching the grass grow on a green. Maybe the LPGA and the WNBA should get together and compare notes.........BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have way too many better choices on TV than to watch the product you're supplying now LPGA. Even re-runs of Mash and Little House on the Prarie are better!!!

Women ... with so many things competing for their attention ... will never be fans of any sport in great numbers, no matter who is playing.
So this question is for men, and men will probably lose interest in Michelle Wie if she calmly resigns herself to playing LPGA tournaments ... even if she dominates. She's a million times more interesting, appealing and exciting than Annika was (sorry, but it's true) however, even if she were to dominate the way Annika dominated, I'm not sure men would be compelled to watch... because it's still women's golf, and in general men can't really relate to it.
It wasn't only Michelle Wie winning yesterday that made the round so special it was the ensemble cast, and each unique story. But was it awesome for guys? I'm sort of doubt it. Do guys care about the reasons each of these girls has for wanting to win...or the shots they craft to try to get there. I think not.
I know this is kind of "out there" ...and I would never wish it on Michelle Wie myself... but from a pure marketing standpoint she should continue to play ...and hopefully win ... on the LPGA Tour. But also commit to doing one PGA tournament in 2010... maybe a post season one. She'd definitely get an exemption, I would think, right? Then her management (agent/parents) would need to hype it up early ...and create lots of drama around it. So everyone would want to check the vibe out at the LPGA tournaments leading up to her renewed attempt at...um... PGA glory.
But seriously doesn't it make sense from a marketing standpoint? The media would be all over it. The fans (men) would either love it or hate it, but at least they'd be aware there was an LPGA right? Anyway very frankly, that's how I see it. :o)

Just remember, the girl is a Stanford student and plays golf part time. Plus she probably has quite the social life. She's not out there grinding it on the range and putting greens 12-14 hrs a day like all the other fulltime pros. She's got the talent. Can't wait till the 2010 season.
