Devil Ball Golf - Golf

These days, most big-name pros have tossed the clubs in a closet, popping out only for a quick tourney to please sponsors or give the kids a vacation. But for a select -- and very nervous -- few, the next couple weeks will determine how their entire 2010 will play out, as they try to get into the top 125 on the money list and win exemption for next year.

We detailed yesterday how close Rickie Fowler is to cracking the top 125 and therefore jumping straight into the Tour without all that messy Q School business. (He's already exempted out of the first stage.) But he's by no means the biggest name searching for that elusive top-125 card.

No, the big name belongs to David Duval, who has burned through virtually all his exemptions and now faces the ugly possibility of losing his card. Since his amazing run at the U.S. Open, he's missed six of seven cuts and now sits at No. 125 on the money list. So much for the career revival, huh? (As we suggested here a few months ago, the hosannas of Duval's return may have been a bit premature.)

Oh, and remember his fellow Open challenger Ricky Barnes, he of the painter's cap and the Open lead at Bethpage? Yeah, he's missed six of nine cuts since then, and sits at No. 121. He too is hoping to get in with some strong performances over the next couple weeks.

Perhaps most dismaying is the case of Stuart Appleby, who, as Steve Elling notes, started 2009 as the only golfer on the planet to have played in every major and WGC event since 1997. But now, he's giving up and relying on sponsors' exemptions for next year, sitting as he does at No. 134 on the list.

While Q School gets the headlines for its go-or-go-home drama, for my money the battle for the card among Tour regulars is much more compelling ... even if it turns your stomach at the thought of a pro losing out on what he's known for so long.

I would really like to see David Duval get his game (between the ears) back in order and get his card for a few more years. I was a fan before he was #1 in the world. Sorry to see his game in the toilet for the past few years.

Duval is the only one I follow with regularity on Tour. I really have pulled for him for a long time. Because Woods stole his thunder when David Duval was #1.

I'm pulling for David to. Golf is an amazingly tough frustrating game. I used to be a pretty decent amateur but now I'm an 8 handicap and have a hard time cracking 80. It's all between my ears and I assume it's also between David's. He strikes the ball as well as anyone out there, on occasion putts right up there with the best. I just don't think the average Joe realizes how hard it is to play this game at the level they do for 18 holes. Usually one bad swing can cost a player the tournament. I would love to feel the pressure but it's got to be stressful. Hang in there Dave.

I love Double D - but to you who said Tiger stole his thunder - check your books. David checked out. he got the YIPS right after he won the British Open and wondered "Is this all there is?" Tiger has been there right beside him - as his best friend not an enemy. David is the first person to give GREAT accolades to his friend for all he has accomplished over the years and Tiger has been there right beside DD during the Highs and lows - giving what he needed... A friend. The two of them have done a lot both on the course and off. Don't spout words just to trash Tiger - get the facts straight and then speak. David has a lot to be proud of and a lot to come back from. He chose to raise his family (which I feel is the greatest reason to be off the course) and try to get his head on shoulders AND he is finding his game - just not fast enough for David but it is coming... it is only a matter of time. And you know who will be the first person in line to congratulate him WHEN he gets his next WIN - his good friend Eldrick TIGER Woods.

142 and 149 on the money list? Am I looking at the wrong list? I just checked PGATour.com and Barnes and Duval are listed as 121 and 125, respectively, on the money list.

Absolutely amazing that a guy that almost won the U.S. Open like Duvall in June might not have a tour card in 2010. Keep plugging. Never, ever give up. All it would take is putting 4 real good rounds back to back, and then he is back in business.

How does one become a writer for Yahoo Sports? Because you obviously have to have no brain or do any research to write a story.
Barnes is #121 on the money list right now, Duval is #125.
Hey Busbee, if you are going to write a story, at least have the information in the story be accurate. Is that too much to ask?

Yeah, this is extremely shoddy research. In all three cases (Duval, Appleby and Barnes) the writer gave us their position on the Fedex standings. Even a casual -- and unpaid -- observer of the game knows that exempt status is based on the money list, not the Fedex Cup.

The author also fails to mention this fact about conditional tour cards: "Players who are ranked between 126-150 on the money list receive a conditional tour card, which gives them priority for places that are not taken up by players with full cards.". Not to mention Duval is already eligible for all 4 majors in 2010 due to his finish in the US Open. I think double-D will be playing quite a bit next year regardless.

Correction to my post....3 of the 4 majors. He is not eligible for the PGA championship, but will be eligible for the Masters, US Open, and the Open championship in 2010.

Information corrected; was looking at the wrong list. Sometimes it's just a simple error like that, Dick. Point of the article remains unchanged.

I never post on here but Mr. Busbee you need to check your facts. There is a big difference between 121 and 125 on the money list and 142 and 149. Especially with only two weeks left to move up or down the money list. Also Brian WHAT THE HELL DO YOU KNOW ABOUT PGA TOUR PENSION PLANS? Why don't you enlighten me as to how their pension plans work!

David Duval's game has been in decline for years, and I think one can confidently dismiss his chances. It's Stuart Appleby that startles me. He was one of the strongest names on the tour just a couple years ago. Just raises my admiration for the players who perform year in and out at the highest level.

In many ways the fall series is the most dramatic of all golf events in the year. I would contend that the pressure of playing for the rights to get a card next year is greater than playing to win a tournament on Sunday afternoon. If you don't win a tournament, you still pocket half a mill or so. If you don't get your tour card, you may be working at a gas station next year.
This is the closes thing American professional sport has to the relegation and promotion battles that are part of all organized sport in Europe and throughout the rest of the world. In the English Premier League (Soccer), for example, the worst three teams drop down to the next division, and the top three from that division get promoted into the Big League. This really gives all teams something to play for throughout the season.

Hey #13 Chad...for someone who has never posted on here, you sure have gotten huffy..,In case you didn't know, the PGA Tour and PGA club pros have a damm fine pension plan...In the OLD DAYS, there was no retirement or pension plans, and this has left a few of the good old timers in bad shape...A little known fact, is that some of the better off guys send checks every month to those less fortunate...How do I know?? because I am one of the OLD GUYS...this is ONE of the things Bivens was mandated to do for the LPGA....increase pensions for the ladies...I think she was given a very raw deal by a bunch of kids who have no conception of much beyond going out and playing golf...Life is more than that...even those that played in college (but never graduated) fail to see a few years down the road....Life is tough, just ask those whose retirement was wiped out by the economy...STUB

Chad K, the PGA tour pention plan is rather in depth yet there are a few articals as of late about it. I will do my best to sum it up, yet by no means calm to be an expert. In a recent statement by NICK PRICE if a player were just to play for the next 15 years and just make cuts in about half of the events they entered they get a percentage of their purse earnings matced and placed into this plan. Nice said it was about 3500 on average for each cut made then placed in some type of compounding intrest plan that the tour matched. HE went on to say that these are players just makeing cuts not winning regularly, like a Charles Howell III or formently a Scott Hoch, (these guys just make a ton of cuts with only a handfull of wins) But Price went on to state that after 15 years or so they would have over 40 MILLION in their pention plan alone, not counting endorsements or other sources of revenue they may have. Google or Yahoo Pga Tour Pention and they will give you specifices but that is a general summary of it, Now go practice your putting, make the tour and get a pention plan of your own 40 M is awaiting, ohh thats WHAT THE HELL I KNOW brotha'
what I dont know is why the PGA of America (not tour) has Mercedes as our official car, What sell outs its not even an American Car for the PGA of AMERICA! only like 3 percent (most likeley less) of members drive a Mercedes, I know of no fellow members in my section that do, and if we did it would be in poor taste to show up in cars nicer than the members, customers your serve. With all they charge us and don't supply us wih the FORD Tauras would be more fitting, that or a fat pention plan, which we dont have
