Devil Ball Golf - Golf

The PGA Tour is weighing the possibility of moving the season opener from Maui when the current contract with Mercedes runs out in 2010. Two words come immediately to mind: thank goodness. This tournament has no buzz. Does anyone, except for the game's real diehards, even know that the new golf season has begun? Opening day in the MLS seems to draw more attention.

The folks in Ponte Vedra have to find a way to spice things up, and that might mean moving this event back to the mainland. The Plantation Course at Kapaula is an absolutely breathtaking layout, but maybe breathtaking isn't really the answer here. The answer may be staging the opener at a more traditional venue, where par is truly valued, where there isn't the potential to shoot 31 under as Ernie Els did in 2003.

Such a move would kick off the new season with the kind of lurking danger that makes the game so enticing, and might even guarantee all the big names show up. This year's no-shows included: Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and Padraig Harrington. Tiger Woods, even if he were healthy, wouldn't be in Maui.

Fans love to gaze at the scenes of paradise in Hawaii, but paradise can wait till next week, at the Sony Open in Waialae.

This week should be about drama.

Of course the season opener should move back to the mainland in hopes of some prime time TV exposure on the weekend. At a time when football and hoops dominate the air waves, golf needs something special to get the season started right. Also, the PGA should require all winners from the previous season to participate (unless the commish himself grants an exemption, as an injury to Woods). It should be at the cost of the PGA banning them from the PGA Championship if they choose not to play in the season opener. That would get all previous year winners there.

I live in Maui and I do not attend the Mercedes. I have been asked to work at the Mecedes, but I do not want to cater to people already making millions of dollars. Most of the people at the Mercedes do not care much for Tiger Woods, not because he does't attend, but because he usually waits for the last minute (week) to say he won't attend. Also, because when he has attended in the past, he is CHEAP and doesn't tip. Yes, I reallize that he is hurt this year, but he probably wouldn't have played anyway. It is okay with me, as well as other residence on the island if they moved the tournament elsewhere.

I want this Mercedes Championship to stay in HAWAII , period !
Hopefully, the players should vote on this issue , but it won't happen because
Tim Finchem and his political cronies won't let the players vote. Their thinking
of moving this tournament to the mainland is a BIG HUGE MISTAKE !
Simply find another sponsor for the year of 2011 and more is the best solution.

I think they should keep playing in maui. the island needs the tourist at this time. air fares and hotels should come down on there prices during the golf week, that would make a lot of tourist come and vacation in this beautiful island.

Unless the tour wants to move the season opener later in January (maybe during the weekend before the Super Bowl) to a major network, it doesn't matter where they stage the season opener. NFL, NBA, NHL, NCAA basketball are all in high gear and televising the season opener only on the Golf Channel all contributes to a lackluster beginning for the casual golf fan. Having the season opener in Hawaii and TV coverage in the evening maximizes its potential for the die hard fans and anyone mired in snow, ice, wind chill and cold wintery weather. The PGA Tour can't really get the hype machine working if its opener is relegated to the Golf Channel. Not having some of the big names hurts as well, but there's 40+ weeks of the season left to go with the 1st significant tournament 4 months away.

i've played here, breathtaking is an understatement.
They seem to showcase a lot of the finishing holes. Seems everytime I turn it on they are showing the downhill, downwind holes. It's amazing to see the 350 yard drives, but they are missing some really awesome holes otherwise.

I do not know which course they would play it on. But it should be a course that is set up so they have to come out of the gate at full speed.

The golf season is way too long to begin with, and starting in January during the height of the NFL postseason, the end of the college football season, and the halfway point of the NBA does no favors with the PGA Tour. Can't they eliminate some of the insignificant tournaments, and start the season in February after the Super Bowl? I love golf, and admire that the players truly earn their paychecks, but a 10-11 month season is too long.

You're looking for "buzz" for a January golf tournament ?? ... really ?? ... golf's off season is less than 2 months = season is too long. I agree with Henry Y, eliminate some tournaments & start season later. Don't eliminate this tournament in Hawaii = stupid idea. Hawaii Rules !!!!
