It was Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, and cornerback Louis Lavender took his seat among the 69,959 fans packed into legendary Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, anxiously waiting the afternoon kickoff between the University of Southern California and Kansas State. It was mostly sunny skies and a comfortable 76 degrees that fateful day, with the east wind blowing crisply at 15 mph. The Trojans, who had their eye on Lavender as a sophomore at West L.A. College, gave their prospect free tickets to the event, an offer he wouldn't pass up. That night, Lavender was watching his future teammates play, but at the time he thought they were the Trojans.
