 Team Report
Perugia, who seemed condemned to playing Serie B football next season less than a month ago, is on the verge of pulling off the great escape, as it defeated bottom-of-the-table Ancona 1-0 on the final day of the season to leapfrog Modena and Empoli (who both lost the same afternoon) in the standings and claim 15th position. This earns the red & whites the right to face the sixth-placed Serie B team in a two-legged play-off at the end of June, to decide which team plays in Serie A next season. Ancona had young defender Daniele Fortunato sent-off on the stroke of half-time for two yellow cards, then Englishman Jay Bothroyd, who hadn't scored in the league since October, scored the all-important goal mid-way through the second-half. Coach Serse Cosmi spoke after the encounter: "It's our moment of triumph and it's right that we finish in 15th position because we deserve to avoid relegation for the way we've played in the last three months." After a week's vacation for the squad, the red & whites have arranged several friendlies to keep their players match-fit in the month they have to wait for the playoff.
