 Team Report
Modena was relegated back to Serie B following a 2-1 loss at the Stadio Olimpico against Lazio on the final day of the season. Perugia defeated bottom-of-the-table Ancona the same afternoon to leap-frog the yellow & blues to claim 15th position, which means a two-legged playoff at the end of June against the sixth-placed Serie B team for a place in next season's Serie A. Lazio's Bernardo Corradi opened the scoring in the first-half, then midfielder Cesar doubled their lead at the start of the second-half. 29-year-old substitute Nicola Amoruso converted a late penalty-kick for Modena, but with only six minutes of the game remaining the players knew their fate was already sealed. Disappointed coach Gianfranco Bellotto commented after the encounter: "We never gave up, always believing we could turn the score around. I think that the town of Modena, the football club and its fans all deserve Serie A football." Meanwhile, president Romano Amadei has ordered the squad to continue training in case Modena are called up into playoff action in the event that Lecce, Siena or Reggina are docked points due to their involvement in a betting scandal which is currently under investigation. All in all, a hugely disappointing season though, with only two victories since the start of November. Several players proved they are not up to Serie A standard, while those expected to perform highly (Joe Kamara and Vedin Music to name just two) performed well below their capabilities.
