Next Match: away to Werder Bremen, May 10 Europe: UEFA Cup (Semi-Final) While things were looking so bright for Hamburg just a fortnight ago, Thursday night's UEFA Cup semi-final against Werder Bremen may well represent its only chance of actually winning any silverware this season. Hamburg was on course for three trophies not long ago, but defeat to Werder Bremen in the semi-final of the DFB-Pokal and a couple of bad results in the Bundesliga means that the UEFA Cup now could be Hamburg's only chance of glory. It leads 1-0 from the first leg and is favorite to reach the final in Istanbul, but coach Martin Jol insists every game is like a final for his side now. "It is May and all we have left are important games," he said. "This has got to be the best thing for a footballer." Hamburg plays Bremen twice in four days, meeting its northern Germany rival again in the Bundesliga on Sunday. |
