Frozen Fantasy: Road rage

The NHL drives me nuts some days.

It seems they’ve changed their minds on southwestern Ontario – all of a sudden, it looks like it could support another NHL team. And oh yeah – they say the Leafs have no veto clout, either.

Wow.

Then Gary Bettman announced he had reinstated Henry Samueli, the owner of the Ducks who lied to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission about an illegal stock option scheme he’d cooked up.

I just about drove right off the road. Both times.

Some guys get a second chance but some guys don’t? I just don’t get it.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m not a Jim Balsillie apologist. But even a pylon can see they’re putting forward mixed messages. And don’t even get me started on Boots Del Biaggio.

No, this doesn’t have anything to do with fantasy. But you don’t play fantasy hockey if you don’t love hockey. And if you love hockey, you hate being embarrassed by crap like this. You don’t want to have to apologize for loving the game. And that’s just what happens with inconsistencies like these.

Reputation management – every other pro league can do it. Why can’t the NHL? But I digress.

Let’s see who caught my eye this week:

Nicklas Bergfors(notes), RW, New Jersey (7-percent owned) – Bergfors is intensely competitive with a decent offensive touch, but he’s been relatively slow to develop. And he’s kind of small. I’m still not convinced he’s going to be a top-six guy but right now, he has me intrigued. That three-point night Thursday sure helped. But when I checked his stats, I discovered he’s actually been pretty good over his last 10 games – 10 points with half on the PP. I’d nab him if he was available in my league.

Andrew Ebbett(notes), C, Chicago (1-percent owned) – Opportunity is knocking for Ebbett, who looks like the man of the hour now that Dave Bolland(notes) is out following back surgery. Anyone who gets to play between Patrick Kane(notes) and Kris Versteeg(notes) is worth a flyer, regardless of the league-wide depth down the middle.

Tobias Enstrom(notes), D, Atlanta (32-percent owned) – Enstrom is a real squirt – he’s barely 5-foot-10 and 175 pounds. But he knows how to run a PP and his skating is sublime. And his 12 points – including five in his last four – are proof-positive he’s a 50-point producer from the back end. So exactly why is he owned in just 32 percent of leagues? Oh yeah, I forgot – it’s that stupid brown bird on his jersey. It makes him a bit of a pariah. But who cares where he plays if he can deliver the mail for your squad?

Tomas Fleischmann(notes), LW/RW, Washington (21-percent owned) – Sure, he’s a tad skinny. And he has been rapped as inconsistent. But right now, he’s riding a six-game, eight-point scoring streak. He even has five goals in that span, something I sure didn’t expect – he is a playmaker, after all. His dual eligibility makes him an outstanding grab right now. Move swiftly or forever hold your peace.

Cody Franson(notes), D, Nashville (0-percent owned) – Franson is a big puckmoving defender who passes well, owns a big heavy shot, and plays smart. And oh yeah – he’s playing in the blueline capital of the NHL – do the Preds know how to pick them or what? He has three points in his last three games and five in 11 overall this season. His pedigree is sound – he exploded over the second half last year to finish third in the AHL in blueline scoring. He can help, particularly if you’re stinging from injuries.

Antero Niittymaki(notes), G, Tampa Bay (39 percent owned) – Tampa coach Rick Tocchet made it abundantly clear at the beginning of this season – Niitty would get every chance to push starter Mike Smith(notes) for playing time. Competition is good, he said. Niitty has been outstanding lately – heading into play Thursday he was 2-0-2 in his past five games with a 1.48 goals-against average and .956 save percentage. And he entered Wednesday with a league-best .940 save percentage and was second with a 1.95 goals-against average. Bear in mind he’s streaky so it may not last. But he’s keeping his body quiet and that may be the secret to evening out those peaks and valleys in performance. At minimum, Tampa Bay is now a two-goalie town. And that gives Niitty some definite value.

Ryan O’Reilly(notes), C, Colorado (26-percent owned) – O’Reilly has really surprised me. He won’t turn 19 until February but he looks like a grizzled vet. His 14 points in 19 games is impressive enough, particularly for a rookie. But it’s his plus-14 rating that’s really impressive. He won’t help you with special teams play but he will help in other categories.

Stephen Valiquette(notes), G, NY Rangers (3-percent owned) – He’s no savior but he may get some playing time if the rumors that Henrik Lundqvist(notes) is injured are really true. That team is good enough to get at least a few wins with a tree stump between the pipes; Valiquette is bound to be better than that. Nab him as a handcuff.

Ryan Whitney(notes), D, Anaheim (47-percent owned) – Whitney’s minus-3 rating Wednesday night sure doesn’t inspire confidence, does it? But I think that now is the perfect time to use your best pick-up line to see if you can get your claws into this guy. Whitney is very talented and should soon start to produce a lot more on the PP. And right now, his owners are growing weary – pounce.

Back to road rage.

I’m not really the white-knuckle type. And I don’t yell and curse when someone cuts me off.

But I do occasionally talk back – and loudly – to the car radio. Twice this week, in fact. I love the game of hockey. And I love fantasy hockey.

But I don’t suffer fools very well.

Until next week.

    oldmanroiter-

Did I ask to be treated like a professional? Nope, I merely qualified my opinion. Is this an online forum? Yup, so relax.

Usage of the adage 'piss poor' in a casual medium is perfectly acceptable; especially within the context of the other posts on the board. Have you ever read anything by Jay Mariotti, Kevin Blackistone, Rick Reilly, Tony Kornheiser, Peter King, etc etc...? They all use casual prose/slang/curse words -often and effectively. So in that spirit, you’re a douche.

    avesrule-

To address your comment, I read everything -sports related- I can get my hands on. This 'column' takes all of 15 seconds to read; so, no big investment. It's called breadth of knowledge. Just because you don't agree with or enjoy someone's opinion doesn't mean it shouldn't be considered or read. Every piece of information we consume contributes to our own perspective, negative or positive. Selectivity leads to ignorance. As for your last statement, I'd love to take Janet's job. In fact, I've proposed that very idea numerous times in my previous posts.

i live in houston where there's no team. I don't know the game or the players very well, and i certainly don't love the game. but i sure get a kick out of fantasy hockey. It's very challenging , especially for someone like me who can't even tell you how players get off sides :0

John, you're taking issue with the layout of the article? Its often referred to as parallel structure, its a useful technique when writing a research paper or article. Stay in school man.
Moreover, I guess the name, position and % ownership of each player are unimportant facts to you, and waste so much text space. Janet should really be more efficient/creative and only provide us with the position and %, then we can guess who the player is!
Also, Mike Richards is, in fact, the devil. Just ask David Booth.

Made a mistake in my last post, Whitney is on pace for 40 + points, not 50. My bad.

Still, this is what should be expected from him.

I know I drafted Clarkson late in one of my draft because I read something on yahoo about him, so those blogs/columns can be usefulls sometimes.

Whitney is on pace for 50 points (9 points in 18 games) so if their owners want to seel low, they are not paying attention.

Tobias Enstrom had a below average season (by his standards) last year and that's why he is not more owned than that.

Good call on Antero Niittymaki and Tomas Fleischmann. I am not 100% sold on them, but both are on my radar.

JVR should get some attention as weel.

i appreciate her writing style, tongue in cheek comments and wit.

if you're relying on solely one column to influence your fantasy decisions, ANY column by a blogger/analyst then you should just have set your team to autodraft, set your lines for the year and started your horrendous habit of staring straight ahead.

    Blah, blah, blah.
Let's see who caught my eye this week:
    Player, pos., team (percentage)
    Player, pos., team (percentage)
    Player, pos., team (percentage)
    Back to blah, blah, blah.
    Until next week.

Every Frozen Fantasy is exactly the same. That's not writing. That's filling in a template.

Why should we pay attention to anyone who claims to work in media relations and then uses the term "piss poor" in his comment? Come on JSGM, if you want to be treated like a professional then write like one...

I think it's a great thing that the NHL has finally changed their minds about Southern Ontario supporting another NHL team. Southern Ontario has know they could support another team while they were taking the Jets and Nordiques out of Canada to places that would better support those teams. (Phoenix LMAO!)

The closer you can have teams to hockey hotbeds the better the league will be off.

I'm not a Janet hater. I'm just not a big fan of her writing style or opinion. I'm sure she's a lovely woman.

Janet tends to make blanket statements, ("Reputation management – every other pro league can do it. Why can’t the NHL?" or Mike Richards is the DEVIL!) that are either poorly thought out or poorly researched -likely both.

Is she American? I only ask because Canadian coverage of the NHL offers plenty of examples of reputation management. Statements from the NHL and NHLPA come across the wire on a daily basis. I work in sports Public Relations, primarily media relations, and I see the NHL's reputation management in action daily. I would contend the NHL deals with far fewer reputational issues then most other professional leagues, in North America.

MLB - Steroids, tainted records, cheating, etc.
NFL - Vick, Plaxico, Stallworth, etc.
NBA - Tim Donaghy, fixing games, etc

This particular issue is frustrating, I will agree with her. But it really doesn't have anything to do with reputation management...

Janet should just quit... Her attempts to come off as witty, informed or interesting are just piss poor. I don't pay any attention to her fantasy suggestions, I'll make my own decisions in that regard. Besides, I can sort stats by weekly performance by myself.

#5. Are you kidding? Engaging? Hockey is a fast paced, end-to-end, contact sport. While I love baseball, I would not use the term engaging when describing game play.

Um, Janet, I don't "love hockey," but I play fantasy hockey. Sorry, your remark was just dumb. Both real and fantasy hockey is nowhere near as engaging as baseball, but it's something for fantasy addicts like me to do until April rolls around and MLB begins anew.

Great take on Bergfors. New Jersey always seems to be great at developing their draft picks and finding studs out of them. Bergfors, even with him being small, may be that next stud!

the haters will be out around noon. thats when most 32 year old's still living with their parents who stayed up late last night playing dungeons and dragons or watching star trek repeats wake up. they'll all come on here and say "tell us something we didn't know" or "recommend someone i didn't draft". its hard to believe that they are all winning every pool they're in....amazing
