Fantasy football power rankings: Offense

  • Print

You can find more from Michael Salfino at Comcast SportsNet Chicago.

Environment is the major key to fantasy football production. These rankings, updated weekly throughout the season, assess the foundation upon which fantasy football statistics rise (or fall). NFL offenses are ranked 1-32 in the following categories: red zone trips per game, third-down conversion percentage, yards per rush attempt, yards per pass attempt, sack percentage allowed, rushing TDs per game and passing TDs per game. Also use these rankings to target weak offenses when selecting a fantasy defense for the coming week.

Category Key:
RZ/Game = rank in red zone possessions per game
3rd% = rank in 3rd-down conversion percentage
YPC = rank in yards per carry
YPA = rank in yards per pass attempt
Sack% = rank in sacks allowed percentage
TD/Run = TD rushes per game
TD/Pass = TD passes per game

Executive Summary: Let’s look at recent trends, since you see before you only the seasonal ones.

The major outlier in red zone possessions, the stat that I think best reflects offensive environment, is the Giants. The past three games, New York has averaged a sub-par 2.7 red zone possession per game (right at the median).

On a more positive note, the Vikings the past three games are tied with the Saints as the best offense in football in moving the ball into the red zone – 5.3 possessions per game. Remember, it took Brett Favre(notes) about a month to get comfortable with his new supporting cast.

The most explosive passing offenses in the NFL recently include the Bengals at a sparkling 8.3 YPA. Struggling of late at or below that very marginal 6.0 YPA threshold are the Eagles, Falcons and Cardinals. So the trend lines on those three passing offenses are all decidedly down. I know, DeSean Jackson(notes) is very explosive. But Philly is too boom or bust.

The Eagles are running it great of late, though there’s a long Jackson end around gumming that up. Teams that rank much worse of late in run efficiency than they do overall are the Dolphins, Broncos and Bills.

Looking at sack rate of late, you can see the underlying weakness of the Eagles attack – Donovan McNabb(notes) has been dumped on over 10 percent of attempts (fifth worst during this three-game span). Jacksonville can also trace recent struggles in the passing game to poor pass protection – sacks on 10.3 percent of attempts. Getting the Chiefs this week should help the Jaguars and Mike Sims-Walker(notes) right the ship – for now.

Tampa Bay has had better offensive results than San Francisco? Really? Uhhh...remind me again who the every-week fantasy starters are for the Bucs again. No? I didn't think so.

Eh, I don't think it's reasonable to say SF's offense (esp. fantasy-wise) "sucks." Gore, Davis are every week starters at their respective positions, and Crabtree -- after only 2 games! -- is already showing numbers suitable to a WR3, with possibly WR2 upside by the end of the season. Sure, Joe Staley's recent injury certainly puts a bit of a question mark by their OL going forward, and even as one of the (only?) Alex Smith apologists -- I believe his ceiling is infinitely higher than Shaun Hill's -- I think keeping QB production expectations tempered is still a wise move.

All that being said, by all accounts, this is *at least* a mediocre fantasy offense, not a "sucky" one. Of the 12 offenses ranked in front of them, I think they're probably better (i.e. more explosive, balanced, and definitely more fantasy-impactful) than 10 or so.

Those three teams are essentially tied, Reuben. Look at the total index number. I think it's reasonable to say that those three teams all equally suck offensively, yes. All three have benched their QB, though Campbell has come back.

I'm sorry, you can't tell me SFO's O is worse than WAS. Or TB.

Make sure you check out the defense. Matt, you mean last week's total, right? I think I can swing that. I'll make a note and cross my fingers that I see it.

My Ravens need a big win too....after that 3 game skid, a win would leave us tied in the divison with the bengals at 5-3...while still having 2 steelers games to go....lets go 410

Hope the Broncos beat the steelers too

The question is...who will be 2,3, and 4 next week? IND, NE and BAL all have good fantasy matchups in Week 9. Lots of potential for a major shakeup there.
