Looks and Touches: Week 7

The following is a list of the Week 7 leaders in looks and touches. It defines those running backs and receivers who received the most attention this past weekend.

Touches is defined as the number of times a running back carried or caught the football.
 Looks is defined as the number of times a player was the intended target of a pass.
 

TOUCHES
• Justin Fargas dominated the touches for the Raiders in Week 7, garnering 30 (28 carries, 2 catches) to Darren McFadden’s 11 (8 carries, 3 catches). It should be noted that Fargas managed fewer yards (81 - 74 rushing, 7 receiving) than McFadden (89 - 39 rushing, 50 receiving), but if the workload stays remotely the same moving forward, their percent-owned numbers will need to be a bit closer (Fargas 67%, McFadden 96%).

• Mewelde Moore exceeded even the highest expectations in Week 7, compiling 25 touches (20 carries, 5 catches), 134 yards (120 rushing, 14 receiving), and three TDs (2 rushing, 1 receiving) against the Bengals. One advantage he has on Willie Parker is that the Steelers haven’t been averse to throwing him the ball – despite totaling 54 catches in the past two seasons, Parker did not have a catch in the three games in which he was a participant. Moore has totaled 11 catches in the past three games.

• Cedric Benson, the new starting RB for your Cincinnati Bengals. Despite being healthy and active, Chris Perry (2.6 yards-per-carry on the season) did not log a single touch in Week 7. Benson managed 62 yards (52 rushing, 10 receiving) on 15 touches (14 carries, 1 catch) against the Steelers and is a very low-upside option. The Bengals have averaged the third-fewest rushing attempts to this point in the season.

• The platoon watch notes when a team’s RB2 is given at least half as many touches as the RB1, regardless of the reason. Platoon watch for Week 7 included: Buffalo (Marshawn Lynch 23, Fred Jackson 12), Carolina (DeAngelo Williams 19, Jonathan Stewart 18), Detroit (Kevin Smith 11, Rudi Johnson 6), Houston (Steve Slaton 20, Ahman Green 15), Kansas City (Kolby Smith 12, Jamaal Charles 7), Minnesota (Adrian Peterson 23, Chester Taylor 16), New England (Sammy Morris 16, BenJarvus Green-Ellis 13), New Orleans (Reggie Bush 10, Deuce McAllister 10), NY Giants (Brandon Jacobs 18, Ahmad Bradshaw 9), Seattle (Julius Jones 8, Maurice Morris 8), Tampa Bay (Earnest Graham 25, Warrick Dunn 17), and Tennessee (Chris Johnson 20, LenDale White 18).

• Yards-per-touch leaders for Week 7 (minimum 10 touches) included: LenDale White 8.67, 18 for 156), Sammy Morris (8.63, 16 for 138), and Chris Johnson (8.6, 20 for 172). The bottom three: Ronnie Brown (2.0, 14 for 28), Kolby Smith (2.08, 12 for 25), and Earnest Graham (2.6, 25 for 65).

LOOKS
• Braylon Edwards was rewarded for last week’s success (5 catches, 154 yards, 1 TD) with a season-high 13 looks in Week 7, but he failed to capitalize, logging just four catches for 58 yards. This may be something of a no-brainer, but Edwards’ drops and poor production are now a major focus for Browns coaches.

• It may be hard to believe that Chad Johnson’s eight catches (13 looks) for 52 yards and a score qualifies as his best game on the season, but he still has time to turn in his typical massive single-game performances that buoy his overall numbers. He scored at least one TD in just four of 16 games last season, and topped 100 receiving yards in five games; in 2006 he scored at least one TD in just three of 16 games, and topped the century mark in only four games.

• Bernard Berrian (10 looks, 6 catches, 81 yards, 1 TD in Week 7) is developing into quite the attractive fantasy option. After averaging 5.3 looks, 2 catches, and 39 yards (no TD) in the season’s first three games, he’s averaged 9.5 looks, 5.5 catches, and 100 yards over the past four games, scoring three TDs.

• Here’s how the Roy Williams-less Lions spread the ball around in Week 7 in terms of looks for non-RBs: Mike Furrey 8, Shaun McDonald 6, Calvin Johnson 4 and Michael Gaines 3.

• Notable names not among the Week 7 looks leaders: Marion Barber (2), Anthony Fasano (3), Matt Forte (3), Devin Hester (2), Steven Jackson (3) and Roy Williams (1).

• Top 10 players in catch percentage (minimum 4 looks per game): Matt Forte (85%, 29/34), Bo Scaife (85%, 23/27), Steve Smith NYG (84%, 26/31), Marion Barber (84%, 26/31), Ike Hilliard (83%, 24/29), Brian Westbrook (82%, 14/17), Josh Reed (80%, 24/30), Marshawn Lynch (79%, 19/24), Frank Gore (78%, 25/32), and Jeremy Shockey (78%, 21/27).

• Bottom 10 players in catch percentage (minimum 4 looks per game): Ashley Lelie (22%, 6/27), Justin McCareins (29%, 9/31), Shaun McDonald (38%, 11/29), Marty Booker (38%, 11/29), Billy McMullen (39%, 7/18), Braylon Edwards (41%, 20/49), Roy Williams (43%, 17/40), Terrell Owens (45%, 25/55), D.J. Hackett (45%, 10/22), and L.J. Smith 45%, 10/22).
