Looks and Touches: Week 10

The following is a list of the Week 10 leaders in looks and touches. It defines those running backs and receivers who received the most attention this past weekend.

Touches is defined as the number of times a running back carried or caught the football.
 Looks is defined as the number of times a player was the intended target of a pass.
 

TOUCHES
• Adrian Peterson had his biggest game of the season in Week 10, logging a season-high 225 yards (192 rushing, 33 receiving) while matching his season-high for touches with 33 (30 carries, 3 catches). Peterson now leads the league in rushing attempts (206) and rushing yards (1,015) and is second in total touches (221) and total offense (1,113).

• BenJarvus Green-Ellis is the latest beneficiary of the Patriots’ willingness to run the ball, regardless of who is taking the handoffs. He rushed for 105 yards and a score on 26 carries this week (no catches), giving him a rushing TD in four straight games. On the season, the Pats are fifth in the league in both rushing attempts per game (32.2) and rushing TD (11) – this despite not having a single RB with more than 69 carries or four TDs.

• Perhaps the Rudi Johnson experiment has ended in Detroit. Rookie Kevin Smith turned in his best performance of the season (96 rushing yards, 27 receiving, 1 TD) on a season-high 24 touches (23 carries, 1 catch), while Johnson had just four yards on two carries (no catches). Smith has an outside shot at reasonable production with a full workload, but the Lions are currently last in the league at 19.7 rushing attempts per game.

• You were undoubtedly looking for more production out of Tim Hightower than 50 yards (22 rushing, 28 receiving) on 19 touches (13 carries, 6 catches). The 49ers rank sixth in the league in terms of yards-per-carry (3.5), but things might get a bit better for Hightower down the stretch. He faces just one more defense that currently ranks in the top 10: @SEA (16th), NYG (13th), @PHI (11th), STL (28th), MIN (3rd), and @NE (19th).

• The platoon watch notes when a team’s RB2 is given at least half as many touches as the RB1, regardless of the reason. Platoon watch for Week 10 included: Denver (Ryan Torain 12, Peyton Hillis 8), Houston (Ryan Moats 7, Steve Slaton 6, Ahman Green 6), Indianapolis (Joseph Addai 14, Dominic Rhodes 9), Jacksonville (Fred Taylor 19, Maurice Jones-Drew 13), Miami (Ronnie Brown 14, Ricky Williams 14), New Orleans (Pierre Thomas 11, Deuce McAllister 7), NY Giants (Brandon Jacobs 22, Derrick Ward 20), NY Jets (Thomas Jones 26, Leon Washington 16), Oakland (Justin Fargas 23, Michael Bush 13), and Tennessee (Chris Johnson 16, LenDale White 11).

• Yards-per-touch leaders for Week 10 (minimum 10 touches) included: Ricky Williams (9.0, 14 for 126), Chester Taylor (8.07, 14 for 113), and DeAngelo Williams (7.15, 20 for 143). The bottom three: Chris Johnson (1.44, 16 for 23), LenDale White (1.82, 11 for 20), and Tim Hightower (2.63, 19 for 50).

LOOKS
• Mark Bradley seems to be settling in nicely with the Chiefs. With Tyler Thigpen suddenly finding his form and defenses concentrating on Tony Gonzalez and Dwayne Bowe, Bradley was big in Week 10 (14 looks, nine catches, 81 yards, 1 TD) and has averaged nine looks, six catches and 63 yards over the past three games, while scoring twice.

• Kevin Boss caught a TD pass for the third consecutive week, and he’s caught one in every game in which he’s been targeted at least four times (4). In those four games (Weeks 3, 8-10) he’s averaged 5.8 looks, four catches and 46 receiving yards; in his other five games, he’s averaged 1.8 looks, 0.6 catches, and seven yards.

• Notable names not among the Week 10 looks leaders: Bernard Berrian (2), Chris Chambers (1), Laveraneus Coles (2), Jerricho Cotchery (1), and Lee Evans (3).

• Under-the-radar names among the league leaders in looks per game over the past five weeks: Greg Camarillo (9.4, ninth), Lance Moore (9.3, 11th), Mark Bradley (7.8, 29th), Bobby Wade (6.8, 43rd), Ted Ginn Jr. (6.6, 47th), and Koren Robinson (6, 57th).

• Top 10 players in catch percentage (minimum 4 looks per game): Ike Hilliard (87%, 33/38), Marion Barber (85%, 33/39), Matt Forte (82%, 37/45), Josh Reed (79%, 26/33), Brian Westbrook (78%, 29/37), Wes Welker (78%, 66/85), Kevin Faulk (76%, 26/34), Bo Scaife (76%, 42/55), Chris Cooley (76%, 48/63), and Billy Miller (76%, 28/37).

• Bottom 10 players in catch percentage (minimum 4 looks per game): Marty Booker (29%, 11/38), Justin McCareins (33%, 14/42), Braylon Edwards (39%, 27/70), Justin Gage (41%, 17/41), D.J. Hackett (42%, 11/26), Roy Williams (43%, 20/46), Mark Clayton (45%, 20/44), Santonio Holmes (47%, 29/62), L.J. Smith (47%, 15/32), and Javon Walker (47%, 15/32).
