Fantasy Basketball Week 8 Stock Report: Stock Down Players
As the season progresses, players' stocks and value rise and fall depending on their team's performance, the amount of playing time they're receiving, the quality and effectiveness of their play, and the performance of the play around them. While some big-name players like Detroit Pistons C Greg Monroe, New York Knicks C Tyson Chandler, and Indiana Pacers SG/SF Paul George are producing at a lower level as of late, there are many other valuable fantasy players who have seen a recent decline in production. Here's a look at five players, one at each position, whose fantasy stock is down and on the decline in Week 8.
Season (per game) averages*: 35:55 MPG, .422 FG%, .872 FT%, 1.8 3PTM, 17.7 PTS, 3.6 REB, 3.8 AST, 0.8 ST, 0.2 BLK, 1.7 TO
Last week's (last seven days) averages: 34:19 MPG, .350 FG%, 1.000 FT%, 0.7 3PTM, 11.0 PTS, 1.0 REB, 4.3 AST, 0.3 ST, 0.0 BLK, 1.7 TO
While he may be a six-time NBA All-Star, Johnson has not been playing up to his high level of performance as of late. Despite averaging close to 20 points per game this season, Johnson has struggled in the month of February with a shooting percentage under 40 percent and less impact as a rebounder in the month of February.
Season averages: 35:06 MPG, .414 FG%, .821 FT%, 1.0 3PTM, 13.4 PTS, 3.2 REB, 4.7 AST, 1.6 ST, 0.2 BLK, 2.3 TO
Last week's averages: 32:00 MPG, .311 FG%, .875 FT%, 0.8 3PTM, 11.3 PTS, 3.2 REB, 3.2 AST, 1.3 ST, 0.5 BLK, 1.5 TO
Given the balanced team production in players like Jodie Meeks, Thaddeus Young, and Elton Brand, Holiday's numbers this season are slightly down from last season. Recently, Holiday has struggled to find scoring consistency with two-straight three point games against the Orlando Magic and Dallas Mavericks.
Season averages: 32:56 MPG, .413 FG%, .844 FT%, 1.6 3PTM, 12.6 PTS, 3.3 REB, 1.8 AST, 1.4 ST, 0.2 BLK, 1.1 TO
Last week's averages: 34:30 MPG, .396 FG%, .571 FT%, 1.8 3PTM, 12.3 PTS, 4.7 REB, 1.8 AST, 1.3 ST, 0.0 BLK, 1.3 TO
While his production has been relatively steady as of late, Matthews was removed from the starting lineup in favor of Nicolas Batum on February 14 against the Washington Wizards. Reinserted into the starting lineup due to LaMarcus Aldridge's injury, Matthews will likely return to the bench once that happens and could see a drop in scoring and playing time once that happens.
Season averages: 24:05 MPG, .361 FG%, .739 FT%, 0.0 3PTM, 6.3 PTS, 4.6 REB, 0.7 AST, 0.8 ST, 1.7 BLK, 1.0 TO
Last week's averages: 10:30 MPG, .538 FG%, .250 FT%, 0.0 3PTM, 3.7 PTS, 1.3 REB, 0.5 AST, 0.2 ST, 0.2 BLK, 0.0 TO
Despite playing on arguably the worst team in the NBA, Thomas has lost his starting spot and has been an essentially useless fantasy commodity for most of the season. Thomas' only value is for fantasy owners needing a center or assistance in the blocks category.
Season averages: 24:46 MPG, .428 FG%, .561 FT%, 0.3 3PTM, 7.7 PTS, 4.6 REB, 1.8 AST, 1.3 ST, 1.5 BLK, 1.3 TO
Last week's averages: 25:30 MPG, .471 FG%, .333 FT%, 0.0 3PTM, 8.3 PTS, 4.2 REB, 2.0 AST, 1.5 ST, 0.5 BLK, 1.3 TO
Stuck around the 25 minutes per game mark, Johnson has seen fewer minutes against some of the better teams (Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs) that have come to Toronto recently. While Johnson has been seeing fewer minutes, Ed Davis' role on the team has increased and could overtake Johnson's spot as the most-effective power forward on the team.
