Top Fantasy Baseball Players from Week 2, Apr. 9 to Apr. 15: Fan’s Review
Week 2 of the fantasy baseball season is complete and there were many great individual performances this week that helped propel head-to-head league owners to wins. From the best in the game to some surprise fantasy contributors, here's a review of the top 10 fantasy baseball players from April 9 to April 15*.
Week 2 statistics*: 4.0 IP, 1 W, 3 SV, 3 K, 0.00 ERA, 0.75 WHIP
Amidst all the offensive success by the Dodgers lineup, Guerra has done great in the ninth inning and has made fantasy owners forget about super middle-reliever Kenley Jansen. While not a high strikeout pitcher, Los Angeles' success offer more opportunities for this closer.
Week 2 statistics: 12/28 H/AB, 5 R, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 0 SB, .429 AVG
Although it's not too surprising to see the ageless Jeter start off the season well, his second home run of the season is. With only six home runs last season, Jeter's power atop the lineup could give him even more value when his average and other statistics start to drop.
Week 2 statistics: 11/30 H/AB, 7 R, 3 HR, 4 RBI, 0 SB, .367 AVG
7. 2B Ian Kinsler, Texas Rangers
Week 2 statistics: 7/30 H/AB, 8 R, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 1 SB, .233 AVG
Despite the low batting average, Kinsler showed why he is an elite option at second base with three home runs and eight runs scored as the Rangers' leadoff hitter.
Week 2 statistics: 9.0 IP, 1 W, 0 SV, 11 K, 0.00 ERA, 0.11 WHIP
The only pitcher on the top 10 list, Cain made up for his rough start against the Arizona Diamondbacks by throwing a complete game shutout against the Pittsburgh Pirates. If it wasn't for a single to starting pitcher James McDonald, Cain would have had one of the best perfect games in baseball history (11 strikeouts, 106 pitches, and 73 strikes).
5. OF Josh Willingham, Minnesota Twins
Week 2 statistics: 10/22 H/AB, 6 R, 3 HR, 4 RBI, 1 SB, .455 AVG
With a base hit in every game so far this season, Willingham is leading the American League in hitting. With a proven track record for power and a solid hitter for contact, Willingham could very possibly be one of the top fantasy hitters in all of baseball by the end of the season.
4. OF Chris Young, Arizona Diamondbacks
Week 2 statistics: 8/22 H/AB, 4 R, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 2 SB, .364 AVG
Historically a poor hitter for average, Young had three multi-hit games this week for a .364 batting average so far this season. If he can keep his batting average and power numbers up, Young could serve as one of the more affordable five-tool players this season.
Week 2 statistics: 7/22 H/AB, 6 R, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 2 SB, .318 AVG
Coming off a good second-half of last year (11 home runs and .291 batting average), Encarnacion has started off strong in 2012 with a quicker swing and more powerful bat. Protecting by hitters Jose Bautista and Brett Lawrie in the lineup, ride Encarnacion's hot streak into Week 3.
Week 2 statistics: 8/21 H/AB, 7 R, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 1 SB, .381 AVG
A career year in 2011, Molina is already well on his way to surpassing his numbers from last season with great numbers in clutch situations. With Albert Pujols gone, the Cardinals could lean on Molina for more stats on offense if he's able to keep up this early streak.
1. OF Matt Kemp, Los Angeles Dodgers
Week 2 statistics: 12/22 H/AB, 7 R, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 0 SB, .545 AVG
Kemp continues to stay on fire in the first two weeks of the season. While most of his games have gone up against the lowly San Diego Padres, Kemp's numbers cannot be ignored and should once again compete for the Triple Crown this season.
Honorable mentions (ranked 11-15 in order): Cleveland Indians 1B/OF Shelley Duncan, Miami Marlins 2B Omar Infante, Atlanta Braves OF Jason Heyward, Cleveland Indians 1B Casey Kotchman, Boston Red Sox UT David Ortiz
*Rankings according to Yahoo! Fantasy Baseball rankings in default scoring leagues (head-to-head, 5x5 scoring). Statistics gathered from games on Monday, Apr. 9 to Sunday, Apr. 15. H/AB: Hits/At Bats, R: Runs Scored, HR: Home Runs, RBI: Runs Batted In, SB: Stolen Bases, AVG: Batting Average, IP: Innings Pitched, W: Wins, SV: Saves, K: Strikeouts, ERA: Earned Run Average, WHIP: Walks + Hits / Innings Pitched.
