Most-Added Fantasy Baseball Pitchers from Week 1, Mar. 26 to Apr. 1: Fan’s Review
While trades are a great way to acquire the best pitchers for your fantasy baseball team, the waiver wire and free agent pool are also a great source for finding key contributors and pitchers that will help your team win on a weekly basis. From pitchers currently on a hot streak to players expected to breakout or produce in a new situation, here are the most-added pitchers from Week 1 of the 2012 fantasy baseball season.
When new expected closer Ryan Madsen went down with season-ending torn ligament in his throwing arm, Marshall became an instant player of interest due to his occasional closing experience with the Chicago Cubs.
Tuesday, Mar. 27: RP Sean Marshall, Cincinnati Reds, 3,298 adds
While there was some speculation as to who would be the Reds' closer at the start of the season, Cincinnati has officially selected the veteran left-hander in the position, ultimately boosting his overall value as a reliever, rather than go with a closer-by-committee approach.
Other top adds of the day: Jonathan Broxton (2,682 adds), Jake Peavy (2,252 adds), Greg Holland (2,076 adds)
With closer Drew Storen unavailable for opening day on April 5, the Nationals have considered Lidge in the role for the first few weeks of the season. With 223 career saves but a shaky reputation as a closer since his horrendous 2009 campaign, Lidge may see some save opportunities for the Nationals early on this season.
Other top adds of the day: Jonathan Broxton (2,888 adds), Sean Marshall (2,720 adds), Jake Peavy (2,359 adds)
In the second game of the Athletics' opening day series in Japan against the Seattle Mariners, Colon, in his regular-season debut for Oakland, went eight innings with only one earned run (a seventh-inning Justin Smoak home run) and six strikeouts. Unexpected to be a big fantasy option this season, the 38-year-old may find a resurgence in Oakland's spacious home park and essentially has a guaranteed spot in the team's rotation.
Other top adds of the day: Brad Lidge (2,785 adds), Jonathan Broxton (2,514 adds), Oakland Athletics RP Grant Balfour (1,985 adds)
After a great spring, Chapman was destined to possibly earn a spot in the Reds rotation. Unfortunately, Chapman has been moved to the bullpen for at least the start of the season due to injuries to Madsen and Nick Masset. With Marshall selected as the team's closer, Chapman will be relegated to eight-inning relief and have minimal fantasy value until joining the Reds rotation.
Competing with the likes of Lidge for the closer role while Storen is out, Rodriguez will most likely man the role over the seasoned veteran. With a blistering fastball and sharp curveball, Rodriguez has stuff typically found in the ninth-inning pitcher and will give the Nationals a chance to see what they have in the former Athletics prospect.
With closer Andrew Bailey undergoing right thumb surgery and likely out through the All-Star break, Melancon will most likely man the closer role for the first half of the season. An effective closer last season with the Houston Astros, the former New York Yankees draft pick is the most experienced healthy relief pitcher left on the roster with 20 career saves.
Other top adds of the day: Henry Rodriguez (7,798 adds), Jonathan Sanchez (4,845 adds), San Deigo Padres SP Edinson Volquez (2,996 adds)
