  • Scott Hartnell is a veteran available in 30% of Y! leagues. Somehow only 33 years old since it feels like he's been around forever, he rarely gets drafted in fantasy hockey leagues but his ownership tends to increase as the season wears on.

    Why?

    THE MONTH OF JANUARY.

    Let's look at some stats.

Since he entered the NHL, Hartnell has averaged 0.57 points per game (less than 50 on the season), and just 0.26 goals per game.

But his career January averages? 0.67 PPG and 0.34 GPG (roughly 55 point/season pace).

But wait, let's look at just the past 5 years. Since 2010-11, his season average is 0.66 PPG and 0.32 GPG. Respectable enough, but his January numbers in the past 5 years are even better:
    0.87 PPG and 0.48 GPG. That's a 82-game season pace of 40 goals and 70 points.

Tell me your team can't use a player like that. At least in the short term anyway. His numbers do tend to start dropping off back to his career averages around mid-February. But inexplicably, his stick lights on fire almost every January.

    MAKE THE ADD.
