This is a difficult situation. In my keeper league, a 20 team 14-19 sliding keeper scale league, that has been running for over a decade and has more activity in the off-season then most have for a entire year I got with three other managers and decided to award the team a pick in the middle of the first round as compensation. The team would have to protect Taveras though to get the pick.

There are a lot of factors that go into this.

    1. You have the cost to acquire the player originally. For the team in question Taveras was the number 1 pick in a draft and they traded multiple players to get said pick.

    2. Age of the player. Losing potentially 10 years of all star production is a big thing. If he were in his late 30's this would be different.

    3. Skill of the player. You don't give compensation for someone that likely wouldn't be protected.

The goal is to give the team something, but keep it closer to the 75 to 50% of that players potential value.

I have had people complain about someone like Beachy or Medlen should get compensation as well, but I don't feel that is the same because while these players have reduced value because of their injuries they still have value...I had Medlen and teamed him with Corbin last year in a deal for a 2nd round pick for instance.

People also felt that compensation should be granted for a retirement that everyone could see coming like Jeter and Rivera. I countered with if you were taken off guard by a 40 year old retiring you really should find a new hobby.

Others felt that due to the nature of Taveras's passing the owner shouldn't get anything. I countered with unless the owner in question was pouring the drinks how a player passes has nothing to do with compensation.

Yes Taveras could have been a bust of a prospect much like Brandon Wood, but during the time it takes for him to be declared a bust, there would also be time to deal him.
