Commissioner Corner Message Board
I am trying to decide on a 9th keeper in a 15 team league. Mostly leading towards Wong because of position, but my pitchers, I have Sale, and Wainwright. Wainwright, may not be ELITE much longer.

Trout, McCutchen, Harper, Mesoraco, Bryant (R)
Sale, Wainwright, Chapman.
Wong, Archer, Verlander-----Best of the rest.
Segura, d'Arnaud, Cron, Benoit, S.Miller, Pomeranz, Beachy, Medlen.... ALL questionmarks, NONE keepers
Benoit, could be a very valuable player, but then he may become Benoit again. The one everyone is so afraid of. If was a reliable closer, then I might consider him. But with 135 keepers, position scarcity must also be considered. Thus WONG is likely.
I am a trader, and gave up 4 keepers in obtaining McCutchen at the end of last season. Just too bad (RIP) Taveras, was being relied upon as my last keeper.
14 team H2H, keep 4.
Keeping Trout, Abreau, Altuve, so HR, and SB is pretty solid to start.
Carlos Gonzalez, Carlos Santana, Adam Wainwright. Nelson Cruz
are the next 4 in line for the last spot.
CarGo, is near best in game WHEN HEALTHY
Santana, Catcher, but is he really 4 team keeper worthy?
Wainwright: PITCHER. But there will be a million and one available in the draft.
Cruz, Very good, but can we count on 40 again, and keep over CarGo?
Leaning CarGo, only because of the potential. I have the last pick in the 1st round, so I wont be getting cream of crop pick to start from. Least likely is Wainwright.
I won a 5x5 h2h league last year, so I have the last pick in the league.
Trout, Abreu, Altuve are my 3 absolute keepers.
#4 comes from this pool
SP Adam Wainwright....... Overworked past few years and ready for a downfall?
C/3b Carlos Santana.........Catcher and 3B are hard to come by yet offense has fallen off
LF/RF Carlos Gonzalez......Can he stay healthy? History says NO
Nelson Cruz and Trevor Rosenthal are far reaches. Yet if it comes down to a season strategy, I could use one of Saves, Whip, ERA, and get 2 offensive categories to win on each week. Wins are not always a given so ignoring that stat to guarantee 3 is not so far fetched.
So, which of the 3 do you keep? I am leaning towards CarGo, because of the impossible potential he carries. Advice? Thanks.
12 teams. 5 keepers, one of which must be a pitcher.
Trout and Miguel Cabrera are obvious choices. Darvish is my keeper pitcher.
Generally, it would be obvious to keep Cano and Altuve. But I also have Donaldson and Springer.
I am seriously thinking about letting Cano go, and keeping Springer. Altuve with Trout will have me sitting pretty in the SB category. The loss of HR at 2b is not a real problem as most 2b, dont hit them anyway, so even losing up to 20 by Cano, is not a serious issue.
I hate dropping Cano. He is after all the top 2b, for many years. Reliable as can be. As safe as possible. Yet, is it time to move on to the future?
Donaldson is a spectacular 3b. And Springer is the future of the OF. Probably a 1st rounder as early as next season. Too much talent, and it did NOT lead to a title last season. (I had no wins or saves, otherwise dominated).------ Alternative pitcher would be either Cueto or Holland
I got lots of answers. I got lots of answers I expected. I wont say I really got the answer that makes up my mind. Donaldson, with position, power, etc, is a decent choice, over Altuve, Cano, and possibly Springer. I got enough pro votes for Altuve, over Cano. No support for Springer, but I can see him as a potential top 15 pick next season.
I didnt think anyone would really say Cueto over Darvish. If we had preseason trading, I would certainly hold the power and be able to pull off a blockbuster. However, this league doesnt have that. One of the teams has Felix and Price, but he is my biggest rival. Thanks for the answers. I may be closer to including Donaldson at least
Castro may not be a stud, but you are not trading for a stud SS. I am not a fan of Ellsbury, but he is pretty reliable, and should give you some of those valuable SB's. There is a lot of risk to CarGo. I probably go ahead and stick with what you already have. Then, Butler is the type of player you will be able to replace on the FA list, many times over. Dropping him for Rodriguez wouldnt be risking anything. While Cargo is a top 10 player when healthy, the question is, When is CarGo healthy? I would have problems trading him, and I would have problems trading for him.. He is that type of player.
At no time have I seen Cano AND Springer as my keepers. The idea of keeping Donaldson has been strengthened. I really expected more support for Springer as a future top 10 pick, but have problems giving in to that temptation YET. Since Cabrera would play 1b, and Donaldson at 3b, and having my SB with Altuve, it gives me a decent looking infield. It looks nearly as good with Cano instead of Altuve, but Cano doesnt give elite HR, or SB, and is easily matched statistically at any other position at this stage. 2 2b's limits my team flexibility. So keeping both Cano/Altuve would be detrimental overall. Still, one could be trade-able after the draft.
I am by no means ignoring any of this advice. More looking to strengthen opinions, and bring about some points that I hadnt considered heavy enough, or overrated. I have swung a little more towards Donaldson than I was sitting before. No matter who I choose, I really dont think I will be wrong. Who I dont take, will be gone before I draft with the 11th pick.
You could have problems. You could be sitting pretty. CarGo (#$%$uming Gonzalez) is an injury risk. Do you get a 18th round value, or do you get 1st round value? Beltre? At what point does he fall off the earth? Papi? He is great, but again, at some stage, he could start feeling the weight of his #$%$ on his knees and ankles. Dickerson, I like, big time. Felix and Bum, you have 2 of the best pitchers in the game. So, if your players start showing age at the same time, you finish near the bottom. They all stay healthy? You compete for a title. High risk, high reward. I however think the reward will not be there. Trouble on the horizon.

I am an extreme trader. People may be offended at some of my offers as the season goes on. Then towards the end, if I see what I need to win, I make the moves.Overpay to get what I want, overpay to get what I need. 2nd place is first loser. If #2 is good enough, then you just as well not be playing! Between great drafting, successful gambles (Trout), I have built this over the years. 2 years ago, I was a matter of a few saves from a perfect 120 point season. Finished at 119, It is a solid league with good managers. Last year, I finished 2nd because I did not get many Wins from my starters, and my closers flopped. I outscored the league winner by 10 points in all other categories, but lost those 2 by lot.
Until Cano flopped last year, he was easily a first round pick. There is a certain "attachment" to the player of old, and letting go is tough to do. I think Springer is going to be the real deal. Maybe he will never hit 300, but 35/30 is not out of the question.

I like Cueto. I have for a very long time. A HEALTHY Darvish, is one of the best pitchers in the game. Darvish done for the year, so I will settle with Cueto, happily.

Sounds like you would be a real pain in the #$%$ to compete against. The way I built many of my teams is through such an approach. Last season, I traded 4 solid keepers to a team, and obtained McCutchen. Of course, I was planning on keeping Taveras with my last keeper slot, and now, I am relegated to keeping Wong. Trade what you can afford if it leads to a title. If you cannot win, you make yourself better. If you are able to win, it is worth trading the better player to get those vital stats to lead to a title. That is my approach. You have some of the same pain in the #$%$ ideas.
ss----Andrelton Simmons----Brandon Crawford
BN----Brandon Crawford#$%$br />
BN----Francisco Lindor--#$%$br />
I know I desperately need a shortstop. I thought I had Peralta locked up, then he was drafted just a couple slots ahead of me. Lindor was taken with the intent of being my starting SS by mid June, and I will drop Simmons and Crawford, unless I have already flipped them out for another starting SS.
Keepers were Trout, Cabrera, Altuve, Donaldson, Cueto. 5x5 roto, 12 teams
My 9 keepers look pretty good, so I should be top 3, if not league winner. 15 teams.
C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, IF, LF, CR, RF, OF, UT, UT. Losses and OPS in addition to 5x5
Harper---------LF, CF, RF
Players available are
SP-----Greinke, Iwakuma, Shields, Richards
RP----Betances, Allen, Storen
Prospects: Sano, Correa
With my keeper lineup, players will all have big benefits.
A closer, gives me 2 studs, and closers usually dont lose games. there is unlikely to be another quality closer for my 2nd or 3rd pick. I have no real intentions of chasing WINS because they come with losses. But Greinke is too good to pass up.
Longoria, Pedroia, fill that IF slot, to which is a soft spot in many lineups
Carter, fills my 1B, or IF spot. HR's would look good on my roster and put me in control with 6 power guys
But his BA would be a real drag, while getting RBI, and OPS.
Kemp and Pence would fill out my remaining LF/RF hole with a quality player
Rank your top 5 if you are still reading this. Thank you.

I had a feeling with Nelson Cruz last year. This year, I get that feeling with Braun. I like him.
Upton is a pretty good player, at least by perception. He is also a player I fear plummeting in performance
Beltre will give you the certainty of the stats, but age, gives the edge to Beltre
PRICE is a necessary pick, no matter what you do. He is a keeper for the next 5+ years if no injuries
Greinke, would be a nice prize to have, but no need leaving your offense weak.
Tough choices beyond Price. Holliday, and Lester are guys that I am not too keen on as keepers.

15 teams, so already 135 players taken. The value of 30-40 homers would be enormous? What I lose in BA, I could very well make up in OPS. Any productive hitter should give me a leg up on the competition.
Couple years ago, I traded some good keepers, to get SAVES to win the league. It worked. But it cost me last season. With Losses, this makes pursuit of wins costly, and Saves more valuable, thus the closer value, and huts value of starters. A closer strategy, likely keeps you near the top of ERA/WHIP as well. Strategy would be altered a little bit, if I have Sale, Wainwright, Greinke. Then I would pursue W, and K's, and still try to pursue the Saves. I dont expect Greinke to last beyond the 2nd pick. Kemp will be in top 2 as well in my estimation. Those would be my #1, #2 anyway. Hopefully one or 2 of the bottom 3 teams goes prospecting and I have a choice.

Looking at last season, I need to have 215-220 HRS in the category to score 13-15 points. WITH Carter, that would push my total, with him hitting approximately 35 homers, that should give me 160 with just my 7 hitters up to that point in the draft. 5 more hitters to start after that, to which I cold focus on some blazing fast guys, giving me Runs and SB.
I hate to think about taking a closer with my first pick.. That would be rather valuable to my season strategy of avoiding LOSSes, and getting Saves with low ERA/WHIP. I can always hope to get Greinke, and change my pitching plans. I would settle on Kemp or Longoria. I just dont expect those 3 to be available with the 4th pick. I still have a few days to think about it. Im looking for a little perspective. Thanks.

Trout, McCutchen, first 2. Stanton is my choice, but either Goldschmidt or Cabrera would be good picks also. I dont care if its H2H, or Roto for the top 5 picks.
ROTO, 15 teams, 9 keepers. C,1,2,3,ss,IF,LF,CF,RF,OF,UT,UT. Also count Losses, and OPS.
My keepers Trout, McCutchen, Harper, Bryant, Mesoraco, Wong, Sale, Wainwright, Chapman
Kemp, Longoria, Holliday, A.Gordon, Calhoun, C.Carter, R.Zimmerman, Adams, Pence, Werth, Y.Tomas,
Greinke, Shields, Betances, Allen, Storen, Richards, Hughes
I had a bad season with my non keepers and made trades at end of season. So I have 4th pick. Give me your rankings of 1 through 4 in preference. Thank you.
