You can change daily or prepare your roster weeks ahead of time. It requires more activity than football due to the amount of games, but much less than baseball. If you are playing in a public league, just stay active and pick up players who get a lot of minutes. Public leagues are comedic bad and easy to win/make the playoffs.

Yes definitely put someone new in at that position if you have it. Always try to have a full roster if you have the players.
