  • The Iraq War is over.

Beficit Otaxa by Beficit Otaxa . Jul 16, 2008 11:48 PM . Permalink

According to Michael Yon, the independent reporter who has spent more time embedded with combat soldiers in Iraq than any other reporter in the world in his own online magazine today, michaelyon-online.com

I would go so far as to say that barring any major and unexpected developments (like an Israeli air strike on Iran and the retaliations that would follow), a fair-minded person could say with reasonable certainty that the war has ended. A new and better nation is growing legs. What's left is messy politics that likely will be punctuated by low-level violence and the occasional spectacular attack. Yet, the will of the Iraqi people has changed, and the Iraqi military has dramatically improved, so those spectacular attacks are diminishing along with the regular violence. Now it's time to rebuild the country, and create a pluralistic, stable and peaceful Iraq. That will be long, hard work. But by my estimation, the Iraq War is over. We won. Which means the Iraqi people won.

Now watch the Democratic preachers of defeat come out of the wood work disputing this claim from a trusted, independent source with more time in country with combat troops than any other person in the world. This is pure disaster for each and ever Democratic candidate who lied to the American people and who refused to support the troops in the field.

Hey chicken...I think the situation may be worse for the democratic party than even you have so eloquently portrayed. The next President will need to be a skilled Ambassador on at least one level, and I am pretty confident that renovation of the American diplomatic infrastructure will be one of the key issues facing the next President. The McCain campaign will surely take advantage of his record in world politics during his tenures in the Senate and on the Senate Commerce Committee, which he has chaired, to make the case that he is a far superior negotiator and leader. And of course his superlative military record is without peer. Here is a man who understands business and military, a fact which will surely not be lost on American voters. In my honest opinion, given the candidates as John McCain and Barack Obama, John McCain should be running unopposed in this election. Barack Obama is simply not qualified, and the democratic party cannot cover his inadequacies with issues. Obama was an 8 year Congressman and has served in the Senate since 2005. John McCain followed legendary Barry Goldwater as Arizona Senator in 1987 (that's over 20 years in tenure in the Senate) after serving 2 terms in Congress in the House. McCain is an Annapolis graduate, Obama a Harvard graduate. And McCain's military record:

      Service/branch United States Navy
      Years of service 1958 - 1981
      Rank Captain
      Battles/wars Vietnam
      Awards Silver Star Medal,
      Legion of Merit,
      Distinguished Flying Cross,
      Bronze Star Medal

      Purple Heart Medal,
      Meritorious Service Medal,
      Air Medal,
      Navy Commendation Medal,
      Combat Action Ribbon,
      Prisoner of War Medal,
      (partial list)

      Obama's military record-none

      McCain will win...hands down...

I certainly respect people who cherish a man's experience and background.

Here are two more short profiles:
        Al Gore:
        1977-1985 House
        1985-1993 Senate
        1993-2001 Vice President
military: two years in the Army; 5 months in Vietnam

        George W. Bush:
        1994-2001 Governor of Texas
(we won't talk about his draft dodger military reputation)

With all the emphasis you place on experience and military you definitely voted for Gore, right?

your painting is pretty but llacks a some important colors...1) McCain has adopted Bush foriegn policy as his own, and Bush and the Rep. party just broke the all time record for (dis)approval rating (27percent) and 2) all polls are showing Obama with a 4-10 percent lead in the election. To say McCain wins hands down is either a serious case of overconfidence, or just plain denial. I also don't understand why you suggest that issues one stands behind are somehow not connected with substance or experience. Obama seems to be the candidate who discusses the issues while McCain extolls that he has more experience (which, he should, he's elderly). I think issues might decide the election, especially the war (more than any issue in decades, this war is not wanted by Americans), but also domestic issues such as the economy, and Bush/McCain economics of rampant spending has us bankrupted.

Not completely supporting a war doesn't mean you don't support the troops fighting it....although I support the war because around 68% of the population of iraq is under the age of 15 years old.....
.......so if we can secure Oil fields.........hunt down terrorists and free a nation of children and help them lead themselves into even a slightly better way of life.....then thats why you sign on the dotted line right there.....the chance to do something like that. My brother in law went over twice and he said that while parts of the reasons we are there are messed up, but everytime he saw a child smile from recieving some food or playing with them for a few minutes......he said that when he went into the army he went in to fight for this country.....but after leaving there.......he decided it was just as important to fight for other countries so that they can build into a greater nation themselves.........and then he pointed out to me that it wasn't like we didn't know we could get shot at while we were in the army anyways............anyone that has seen full metal jacket knows that

Defining an ad hominem argument as guessing wrong is incorrect. An ad hominem argument consists of replying to an argument or factual claim by attacking or appealing to a characteristic or belief of the person making the argument or claim, rather than by addressing the substance of the argument or producing evidence against the claim. Creating a straw man is an accurate use of an ad hominem attack. You should study debate more closely.

J Wild, you keep putting words into other people's posts that simply aren't there. You should try using argument instead of character assasination. It would make you look less silly.

Not another conspiracy theorist. Zeitgeist is a great comedy with it's "we are controlled by Dubya-Cheney & controllers of the world financial system." Thanks for self-identifying as an individual completely out of touch with reality. Enjoy the rubber room.
