    Keeper Leagues

I am going into the second year of my keeper league and the members of the pool are having a disagreement about the number of keepers per team. I am a fan of keeping more players rather than fewer, and the league settled on 5. I was curious how many keeper players most people's leagues keep?

    • We have a 14 team league (16 active slots and 5 bench players) and we keep 8 skaters and 1 goalie. I am a fan of keeping more rather than fewer too. If you have only 4-6 keepers then you will just keep the stars that you have and that's it. By having more slots you will need to make some tough decisions between keeping a promising young player and a solid 60 point guy. It is these kind of situations that make keeper leagues fun (unless you get it wrong everytime ;) You can still have parity too, for the past three seasons we have had 6 different teams finishing in the top-3 and no team has been there in all three seasons. Draft and FA pickups still play a key role.

    • 5 or 6 is pretty standard. Any more than that and the competition level starts dropping since a winning team can simply keep more of its great players. Most folks have 5 or 6 keeper-worthy players regardless of how crappy their team is overall, meaning the playing field is fairly level.
